Just to add onto this a little. The Word Bearers actually have a good amount of older fluff about fielding their units 12 men strong. Dunno why they did and there wasnt a whole lot of it, but it just implied the norm for some reason ;)

12 Apostles of Jesus, WB are religious. Also, Iron Warriors appear to like operating in multiples of 3.

Never thought of that, nice catch. Also nifty of the IW never knew that at all.

Am I right in thinking that these numbers no longer have any particular in-game significance now that the new Codex is out? I can't find anything in there regarding bonuses for squad sizes or anything (unlike the previous Codex).

That is correct, they no longer have any in-game significance.

just like 99,99% of fluff ever writen.

You have to admit, some of the good stuff was taken out, like alot of the Nurgle powers for example .

Nurgle players like myself, lost alot of abilities that were useful, along with numerous items of wargear. :tu:

Whats your source for that?

Im not sure where i originally read it, some time during second edition. Probably a short story they wrote up or something. Also its mentioned in the wikipedia when you look into the word bearer fluff, it just says they tend to use 12 man squads for their units. Nothing else noted about it. Also in second ed. the codex (i believe) mentioned how elite the word bearer marines were, saying that we made extensive use of the veterans. Again this is about 10 years ago so im not sure of the source, just random knowledge stored away.

I believe it's also in the index astartes, according to the footnote in the Lexicanum Word Bearers article. Sadly, I don't own a copy
I do, here you go:

Each Host varies enormously in size, ranging from the equivalent of a Space Marine Battle Company to a rare few that almost equal a Chapter in size. The organisational make-up of each Host differs wildly as well, and can change depending on the whims of the Dark Apostle that leads it. Often they wilt suddenly alter the hierarchy of their Host for reasons known only to themselves. The reason for these changes has continued to baffle Imperial tacticians, as they often result in unwieldy or tactically inflexible formations that appear to have no battlefield precedent. The Word Bearers themselves accept these changes without question and none dare question the Dark Apostle's methods. The most commonly occurring structure discovered is that roughly equating to a Space Marine company, with the Host broken down into units of about twelve warriors. Each is commanded by a champion of the Word Bearers who strives to become as devout a war leader as the Dark Apostle in the hope of one day being chosen to succeed him on the occasion of his death.

I miss nurglling squads, and nurgling infestation upgrades, even though they really didn't apply to me.

I miss my servo arms too. Had to model a whole new pair of lord models that didn't have them
