Drudge Dreadnought
I picked up a land raider the other week, and while i've only tried it with terminators i was considering what other nasty things could go inside it. Terminators or berzerkers are the regular choice i know, but i was pondering if any of these other options would be worthwhile and wanted to know if anyone has tried them. - Thousand sons squad with wind and attached sorc lord with wind. Pops out, shoots, charges. 1k sons can rapidfire then charge, and 2x wind would be brutal. On the other hand they arn't very good in melee, but given their resistance to power weapons they have great staying power. -Simple noise marines with pw champ and doom siren. -Havocs or 4x flamer or 4x melta. On a similar note, can you put raptors in rhinos? I know you cannot take one with them, but if another squad's rhino picked them up they could do a 12 inch move, then next turn pivot, disembark 2", fly 12, then assault 6. Wouldn't be huge, but would mean they arn't in the open for the first turn. Tfcdogbert
Havocs might be viable, noise marines definitely viable with highter initiative, Ksons not so viable i dont think, but it does put them right in rapid fire range, that will dish up a whole lot of hurt if you want an MEQ unit dead yesterday. Cant put raptors in there unfortunately. Seahawk
Or you can put a 5 man squad of CSM in there. That keeps an AV14 scoring unit pretty well content for most of the game, then in the last legs of the game they rush forward to claim objectives. That's kinda how I've been using mine (never as an assault transport, amusingly) and it wins me many games to have a totally untouched scoring unit pop out near the endgame. chillin
T-sons - you can't rapid fire then charge. Why would you want to charge w T'sons anyway ?? T'son just as effective getting out of a 50 pt rino. NM's - could do it, don't know that it would be worth the cost of LR in order to do it. No where near as effective as brzrkrs. havocs w melta or flamer - meh, only really good that 1st turn with 4 flamers burning, after that they just csm's, does not warrent a LR IMO - can not put raptors in a rino. Drudge Dreadnought
T-sons - you can't rapid fire then charge. Models with slow and purposeful have relentless, models with relentless can move, rapid fire, then charge. Models with slow and purposeful have relentless, models with relentless can move, rapid fire, then charge. yes you are right about that. I was in a rush, wasn't thinking. But the point remains...why would you want T'sons to charge?? out of CC- 2 ap3 shots, in CC - 1 ap- attack. You want to keep them out of CC if at all possible, not buy a 235-255 pt LR in order to get them into CC. That's IMO anyway. jamjar
I must say i'd be loathe to use shooting then assault troops with any significant fire from a land raider as if your playing anyone with half a brain they will just take off the ones closest or flee from the casualties leaving you stuck outside your tank not using that expensive assault ramp model how a bout combat chosen tooled with marks? they could make a mess but do suffer a bit from poor mans terminators syndrome. Think he was more saying, with the squads sorcerer and an indepented sorcerer, he could lay down two winds of chaos, +8 rapid firing inferno bolters, THEN they charge whatevers left to finish them off. I think that actually is very very strong as not many non-vehicle units would survive that kinda onslaught. Personally on the rare occasions i run land raiders, i usually throw in some havocs, x2 flamer, x2 melta, champ with power fist. That is just personal preference and i know alot of people prefer other things. Sometimes i will also run a small unit of terms in it, god i wish we could fit 12 models in our LR's  That extra term could make a HUGE difference. Anyhow a unit of five, one champ with a chainfist, two with lightning claws, heavy flamer, and the last one i usually leave as is. When i do this (again its rarely) i will throw in a few combi-flamers, just one or two in case i need to assualt a very large unit of some sort. Just my two cents. Deacoknight
A unit of chosen with 4 power weapons and an Icon of Slaanesh w/ a Sorcerer with the lash has worked well for me on occasion. I've also been known for stuff a land raider full of possessed with an icon of khorne as well.
