Hubernator
Here's my first mini that I painted :P twas in the holidays for my bro's smurf army but hey ;) http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg17/Hubernator/first%20mini/RIMG0013.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg17/Hubernator/first%20mini/RIMG0015.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg17/Hubernator/first%20mini/RIMG0016.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg17/Hubernator/first%20mini/RIMG0017.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg17/Hubernator/first%20mini/RIMG0018.jpg
Kanazuchi
Just a few quick/basic points: 1.) The blue is a bit oversaturated. You should check out some of the great tutorials on highlighting/shadowing here at the BC. 2.) The blue looks like it was slopped on. Remember, good painting is all about layering. Trying thinning your paint out and giving it another go. 3.) Metallics can be a real pain, but when done right they are amazing. You should look in to some of the NMM (Non-Metallic Metallics) here. 4.) Some detail could really help make this piece pop. Maybe paint the rivets on the shoulder pad gray, etc. Very good for your first mini though! Keep at it, it gets easier!!!
nurglespuss
good job :> paint is nice an even, and its resonably neat all over. FOr a few hints and tips (for this model specifically). I would recommend: when painting gold, place brown underneath as a basecoat first, it really stengthens the colour. Mix up a wash of badab black/wossname brown/asurman blue and cover the model, it will really help everything stand out!! Great job!!
Hubernator
@Kanazuchi: Cheers :) Although I don't think I'll be painting ultra's any time soon :P 1) I'm no good at highlighting ;) last time I tried I made a mess and had to go over it. 2) My style of painting is essentially base-coating once/twice in black, then applying the paint in one even coat. 3) I do prefer the metal parts shiny rather than NMM. Personal favouritism but hey. 4)Yes I was thinking of doing that. Not sure where exactly... @nurglespuss: Cheers for the comment :) I should've done that you know: put an undercoat of TinBitz before applying the gold -_- I'll remember that for next time. AS for washes I don't have any :( Also I really am stuck on using them (mostly on the "why" bases). Again, cheers for the comments guys! :)
nurglespuss
cool :> Why use washes? Well to be honest, the new GW washes have made a lot of the techniques I developed over time redundent, because they are so good now at what they do. In the simplest of therms, they pretty much do all the shading/highlighting and midtones for you on a base colour, and on a shaded/highlighted piece, treble the effect you already made. And biggest bonus, they dont leave horrible marks as they dry.
Hubernator
hmmm, sounds interesting. I might have to get some when I (finally) start my Phantoms :) That along with about 6 different paints -_- Ah well. I still need to gloss this marine...
