Askren
So I finally got ahold of a camera and took some crappy pictures of my first few painted minis. Now, bear in mind, I've been away from this whole thing for about 8 years, and I've developed quite a shaky hand since I last held a detail brush, but all in all, I think I'm not terribly bad. My solid color painting skills are decent, as far as I can tell, but highlights and shadows are giving me some trouble. First mini- utter failure http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/HunterMage/CIMG0708.jpg Second...slightly less so, but still a failure. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/HunterMage/CIMG0709.jpg Third, and, hey! We're making some progress! Attempt at at putting some purple on the black edges to bring out the pink messed up most of the model, though. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/HunterMage/CIMG0720.jpg Fourth, and not bad if I do say so myself. Still needs an ink wash and shadows/highlights. Lots of gold on this guy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/HunterMage/CIMG0699.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/HunterMage/CIMG0701.jpg Fifth, and I'm determined to make this guy great! Wish me luck! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/HunterMage/CIMG0707.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145988-first-painted-minis/ Share on other sites
ant7
Definately improving, the last pic is a bit hard to make out though. One question, are you thinning your paints? It looks like they might need a touch more water added to them. Pretty good for not touching a brush in 8 years. Cl4d
There's one thing I'm questioning and it's the 2nd marine's pose, why is he lookking up like that, it looks like hes got a broken neck, just wondering cuz I once bought marines on ebay and they were all oddly positionned like that. Scar Weaver
None of those minis are beyond help. Just thin those paints, add more layers, then touch up. Sputnik99
Hi askren, not bad so far and it's always hard to get back up to speed. As mentioned it would help if you thinned your paint and your base colours are to bright to start with and this will tend to make high lighting more difficult as the contrast is much harder to achieve. So I'd start with a darkeer base colour wash that with a thinned darker shade and then gradually start highlighting from there. The thinned paint will also help to show up natural highlights that are much easier to follow. nurglespuss
Hey there :> as others have said, have faith! I can see the improvement from figure to figure. Indeed thinning your paints a little is in order, but also use the new washes, and keep practicing. Pink is one of the harder colours to get right, and pink over black even more so, so you've picked a challenge there! As we can see from your ultramarine, you can paint fine, just need to pick your colours. Anyway good luck! take your time, and write things down, it helps to remember trial and error techniques :> Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145988-first-painted-minis/#findComment-1693057 Share on other sites
JetfireUK
One thing that I would say is that all your figures so far shouldn't be considered 'failures'. Each figure is a part of a learning curve and things will come together. As someone has already said; pink is a tricky colour to highlight so it shows that you've got courage with your colours. One thing that I've found which are very useful are the new GW washes - they are far more user friendly than the previous inks and would help give depth and definition to your figures. Hope that helps. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145988-first-painted-minis/#findComment-1693064 Share on other sites
Askren
Thanks for the tips! I've been meaning to put together a wet palette for a while now, just haven't gotten around to it. I assume it will help my pinks a lot once i get the coat thickness right. That said, I've started an Ultramarines squad which will get picture-ified soon. I basecoated them black and dry-brushed thee blue up from there, as I rather like the darker look. They're trimmed in gold, and I'm taking extra care with details. As for the Chaos and their odd positioning: I had some random, stupid notions of 'converting' them using only the bits that came on the sprues, which basically led to me hacking apart almost all of the arms I had for various random 1-handed bolter & chainsword combos. For that particular guy, I basically took a chainsword from the left hand, and put it in the right hand, slightly cocked to the side so he can hold it over his head and look like he's yelling.
