Crimson Ultrawings! A Chapter is born!

First post on here so apols if I screwed up on the pic format, just cut n pasted things over here!

 

Well, cut a long story short, a while ago I bagged some amazing converted Dark Angel miniatures from ebay on an Impulse purchase. Wanting to do them justice and admittedly annoy the bearded ones out there I decided there was only one option and that was to paint them blue! Lack of the correct GW pots led me to make do with the tamiya colours I had (little darker than the codex some might say). What we ended up with is a new chapter because I am simply too lazy and too tight to buy the required paints

 

The assault terms are the first of the said converted minis I bagged, very very nice job he did on them too, were a pleasure to paint, there are also some very nice scouts and devs to come in the same style.

 

Went fishing on ebay at the weekend and pulled in quite a catch, got to clean them up and re-paint of course but I am aiming to complete them all using my speed painting technique so they should end up a nice bold gaming standard similar to the Starship Trooper armies here SST armies

 

I am aiming for a manageable nicely balanced playable force so hopefully I won't go crazy, maybe one of each of the specialist vehicles and a few rhinos to add to the list below, hmmmmmm, saying that I DID only intend to build ONE Warhound last October......Titanic madness so who knows where it may end!

Some of you may recognise the DN as the one on the base of the Titan, I figured the existing base it was on as a little impracticle for gaming so made it transferable onto a more managable base, hehe

First of many armoured vehicles to enter service with the Crimson Ultrawings is this Pred Annihilator "Dominus"!

Also re-assigned the Chaplain from Titan duty (he was leaping from Brother Humongus like some heavily armoured tick) Tidied him up a little, based him and he is now ready to smash some heads, grrrraaaaahhhh!

Gread job using the Tamiya acrylics too, I think its a more 3D colour scheme. Also a tutorial of you 'speed painting technique' people would appreciate!

The whole army looks great, but the termies really stand out. It's simple, clean conversions like the beards and custom helmet that really set an army apart, in my opinion.

Mal, OTT is the name of the game, besides the pred was a second hand job from ebay, painted with tar and glued together with toothpaste, you really dont want to know what terrible nasties those bags cover! You would be surprised actually how it mirrors real life, check out some of the crap that gets piled on modern APC/MBT's when shuttling from A to B!

Yeah I understand that, I just always have the preference to keep my marine gear clean and tidy... after all they are completly self sustained, and if you find marines, then they will have a ship in orbit for supplies as required.

bah don't listen to him. That was one of my favorite things. The termis look great too. In fact the level of detail you achieved for merely "speed painting" is phenomenal. I paint in a different way I think, it takes longer and looks half as good. SOOO, if you could provide us with paint names and the technique you use, I am sure we would all greatly appreciate it. Keep it up!

They look great. Did you make the rolled up tarpaulin on the predator yourself? Or are they in from a sprue of some sort?

Well, been away for a week hence the lack of updates but had my brushes out and working double time to re-enforce the crimsons! Background fluff too!

 

The Origin of the Crimson Ultrawings!

 

The crimson Ultrawings are unlike any other marine chapter, chosen for their grim determination and no-nonsense attitude they are drawn from several main chapters, often called in to situations that require brute force and a direct, some might say suicidal, approach

 

Most missions call for the marines to be deep behind enemy lines, detached and out of touch with supply ships and higher command for long periods they are granted a certain amount of autonomy and must carry most of the supplies needed for the mission in hand, for this reason they often travel with several armoured vehicles to aid with support fire/logistics

 

It is rumoured that the original geneseed for the mainstay of this fighting force was taken from a small area of Terra known as ‘The North'

 

This could be the explanation as to why the Crimson Ultrawings have been reigning champions of the inter-chapter drinking game since it began. It could also suggest an origin for their legendary and deadly war whippets

 

The unit motto is “First ones in, last ones out”

 

No place for a lady

 

Sister Anabelle grimaced as she dived behind the barricade, enemy fire shredded the wall where she had been stood a second ago. Things were bad, things were VERY bad. Her small scouting force was down to three sisters of battle, ammo was nearly gone and the Eldar closed in from every side. WHERE were the re-enforcements she had requested WHERE!

 

She peered over the barricade; suddenly shapes she recognized broke the distant gloom. MARINES!

 

Captain Samuel peered into the gloom, his bionic enhancements highlighted areas of the battle scarred terrain that his normal vision could never have analyzed.

 

In an instant his military mind had concocted a superior battle plan based on the positions of the enemy units he had scanned.

 

“Alpha squad, spearhead the left flank, Gamma fall back follow on right flank, suppressing fire. Chosen ones prepare to deep strike on my mark”

 

He stopped, drew a deep breath and raised his sword…..”IN THE NAME OF THE Emperor” his sword fell forward pointing towards their quarry “CHHAAAAAAAARRRGGGEEEEE”

 

An explosion of blue sprang from the smoke, Alpha squad fired up the jump packs, in an instant they where upon the Eldar, chain swords did their butchering, limbs fell and screams filled the air.

 

To the right the Devastator squad opened up with their heavy weapons, a torrent of lead, laser and plasma was emptied into the large group of Eldar warriors ahead, they dived for cover, enough time for Samuel's squad to cover the open ground between them. Bolt guns screamed into life tearing into the enemy and Samuel's squad engaged the remaining warriors in a deadly melee. He scanned his surroundings, as he suspected the Eldar had held reinforcements in cover, they broke from their hiding hole and made for the swirling melee of blood and guts

 

Samuel blocked a heavy blade and plunged his sword into the owners torso, driving it deep he raised his boot and kicked the limp body from is bloodied weapon, he deftly reached for his belt, pulled a marker grenade and threw it towards the rapidly advancing Eldar re-enforcements

 

“Chosen ones, on my Marker NOW”

 

For a split second the battlefield was illuminated by a blue haze, the smell of ozone filled the air; the chosen ones shimmered into existence. Two Eldar shuddered to a halt, their last vision being that of the lightning claw plunging into their chests.

 

A booming voice could be heard even above the sound of screams and bolter fire “AHAHAH ANYONE FOR A KEBAB!” Sergeant Blessed roared with laughter at his own joke, with a swift motion he flicked the two Eldar from his clawed hand. Around him the rest of his terminator force had already engaged the terrified enemy, beneath the onslaught of hammer and claw they stood little chance.

 

Captain Samuel pushed forward towards the sister's position; little opposition stood before him now, the execution of his battle plan had been swift and brutal.

 

Suddenly a blur of colour flashed from his right, flashing blades danced before him and there stood an Eldar harlequin

 

“Your honour marine, shall now be the death of you for I challenge you by trial of combat the right to take this field, I know your traditions pig now prepare to DIE”

 

His blades flashed trough the air with supernatural speed, he danced them around before Samuel in a show of dexterity and combat prowess that would have put the fear of God into any man.

 

“This battlefield shall be MIN…”

 

As he finished his sentence a clean round hole appeared in his forehead, the harlequins eyes looked up and crossed in a vain attempt to register what had just happened. A second later the rest of his body caught up with the fact that he was dead and crumpled into a lifeless heap, swords clattered to the ground

 

Captain Samuel looked down the barrel of a smoking bolt pistol, turning to face his men he growled at them

 

“I don't fight men who wear tights”

 

Kicking the fallen Eldar aside he led his men forward towards the barricades. Before him the sisters arose, they raised their weapons and cheered their saviors.

 

Samuel approached the leading sister, holstering his gun he looked her up and down and a smile cracked open his face

 

“Make Yer'sen useful old love and get kettle on, ‘am bloody parched'

The dev squad consists of the excellent DA converted minnies I pulled from ebay a while ago, there is also a tac squad and scout squad to the same style, probably use them as Pretorian guard or something, think Veteran, double hard carrying flick knifes sort of thing

Amazing. I think my favorite part so far is the troops riding on the top of the Rhino, WWII Sherman style. Any massive leg conversions for that?

No real work needed on the legs, just a little extra bend here and there. In fact not really much conversion needed at all, a few of the hands cut an twisted round is about it! The marines are from the 5 man box set, snagged it of ebay for a few quid for this purpose, always liked busy armoured vehicles, injects a little life into an otherwise boring and plain model I always think

 

Alys, these particular marines are glued but there isnt any reason why they cant just be tacked on with a little blue tak if your wanting to multi-task them, thats how I held them in place while I was working out positions

Wow I must have passed over this before but I absolutely love this army. I particularly like what you have done with your tanks they have much more personality than the stock models. I'd be very curious to hear how you paint these guys, I remember trying tamiya paints and found them terrible to work with so I would be interested to hear how you achieved these results. Great job and keep up the good work.

 

p.s. Where did you get all of the sacks/boxes that you have on your vehicles I have looked for something like that and never found something suitable.

They look great, I like the darker blue color!.

 

The only thing that stands out to me are the crates, it looks like they might get in the way of the turrets? Maybe this is just a perspective matter, but I wouldn't imagine marines to stack crates so they would get in the way of the turrets operation.

These guys are absolutely fantastic.

I love the way these tanks turned out. I've also had some ideas of putting marines on top of tanks, but way the you did it together with the supplies is just great.

Hi Gumbafish, the parts are 1/35 tank accessories (try evilbay), look about right (satisfy my low standards anyhow) for 25mm mini's. Certainly a damn sight cheaper than any 'official' parts available

 

Therat, try not to compare realism with this sort of gaming, remember for most part 40k gear is there for effect, you could point the finger at most things in sci fi for not being 'realistic' mainly because it doesnt have to be, clues in the title. FICTION! Besides if we want to point things out, on the same example of the stowage strictly speaking a bunch of marines wouldnt really be sat atop a nice big juicy target like a rhino in a combat situ, that RPG might not get through to the tank crew but its gonna make a tasty jigsaw of the poor sods sat on top! My mantra in 40k is if it looks cool, its a go, artistic license is the key ;)

 

Realism stays strictly on the shelves of my historical models

 

Combat gear doesnt generally stay on a fighting vehicle once the sugar hits the fan, think of them as glorified mules until enemy contact if you like

 

Someone mentioned the laser blasts a bit further up, maybe I should have simply painted a straight rod of invisible light x inches long, would that have looked OK? Likewise, strictly speaking the fluff on the bolter ammunition describes it as a girojet slug, very small charge to clear the barrel, resulting in hardly any sound, minimal muzzle flash, you gonna go tell all the 40k artists that there pictures of great gouts of flames spilling from the marines weapons are wrong? Not to mention how pants would a marine look firing that sort of thing, he would be the laughing stock of the Imperium! :lol: Artistic license chaps! Artistic license

i love about everything on this army the tanks, the termies, the marines, the stories EVERYTHING! I am amazed at the tanks painting and mods but I have to say the termies got me.

Thanks I'll have to try searching there for some parts. I wasn't too sure which scale would work, I was thinking 1:48 but if those are 1:35 then I'll have a go at those since that scale is more common and easier to find anyways.
