This is my first real conversion, what I've basically done is removed the eagle from the back of the model (behind the head) removed the black reach icon on the right leg, swapped his powersword for a power axe and filed the original head away and made a dip to use other model heads.

What I've got planned for the model is putting a magnet inside the chest of the model, then putting some small metal pins in the neck joints of 5 different heads, as well as a magnet in the base under the helmet, so you can cover up the hole with some base decorations such as the black reach skulls and bullet casings.

What I'm asking is there any tips you wonderful model converters could give me? And please take in mind I'm a complete novice for model conversions

Thanks

Hi there! a great little project (I want a black reach captain, but I dont want black reach :< ).

Its looking good so far.

That Dark Angel banner however has lost all the crisp edges of its detail due to thick paint, I would perhaps suggest replacing that part?

OK. as for your magned idea, great! You need to pop to your local hobby store (not neccesarily GW, more expensive) and purchase a 'pin vice' or hobby hand powered hand drill. and a couple of drill bits.

This will serve you very well for creating round recesses for your magne idea, and in pinning things (like banners) to back packs etc.

As for the magnet idea, if you havent already got them you need the smallest rare earth magnets you can get (ebay, so so cheap). and the best glue (in my opinion) to use with them is Locktite, preferably gel. attach the magnet it a dip to the body first, and leave to dry for a whole day. then lay a single magnet on top (they are awfully thin so thats cool) and, on your desired head(s) add a drop of super glue to flattened neck and place ontop of magnet. this ensures A. magnets are right way round (I've got it wrong once and lost a head ;) weeee!) and its in the right position centrally. leave for a day again, remove and paint :>

I've already created the recess using the round file and once you've got a head in the groove you can't notice, I know about the banner, it was just an example one, I'm thinking about using the break fluid removal thing, or just replacing the banner completely from bitzbox, right now money is a bit tight, so ebay will be out of the question for now, but I will look around for earth magnets and the such

I use mr muscle oven cleaner, that strips plastic with no damage at all (just doesnt touch enamels - but not found anything that does!!). Or depending on if your UK or US theres that 'simple green' they are always raving about....

Yeah, Know what you mean about money! I've been recycling my bits into marines :tu:

K&J magnets? are they any stores in England that stock them?

update kinda...

I'm toying with the idea of giving him a standard marine chest so I can then pose both arms and green stuff the front of the robe again, either that, or use a Black Templar one and remove the BT icons

I like the idea for the head. You might want to look at K&J magnetics. They have some small ring magnets that will fit a paper clip inside the inner diameter. If interested, I'll look up the page for them.

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/

I've used them multiple times and never had anything to complain about.

I usually use the D201 (1/8" dia. x 1/32" thick) for things like power armor marine arms and such, and if you want a little larger for say terminators or even tyranid monsters I either use the D301 (3/16" dia. x 1/32" thick) or for monstrous creatures the D401 (1/4" dia. x 1/32" thick).

I buy in 100's to get a few dollors off. Average total for a few hundred magnets is around 25$.

Also, they do ship internationally via UPS or even USPS.

K & J has the following safety link. Let me also quote from it:

Never allow neodymium magnets near a person with a pacemaker or similar medical aid. The strong magnetic fields of the magnet can affect the operation of such devices.

I guess that's not a GoodThing...

If that's the case, there goes my conversion work then.

Edit...

Well, not true, I could just stuff the body with green stuff with a paper clip straightend in there and remove it after it's cured and have a slightly longer than originianally planned pin sticking out the neck joint on the heads.

how long should i leave them in mr. muscle, and what type should i use?

Update:

I've taken pictures of the possible heads I will be using for this project, I apologise for the crappy picture quallity.

Now, I just need to pin the necks and add a magnet or have the pin sticking into a pin mould made from green stuff just inside the body.

Cpt Ultio, If it was me, I'd check with a doctor on the magnets. I'm not sure if the smaller ones would cause a problem, or if newer pacemakers are better shielded, etc.

I hope there's a way for you to use them safely.
