Red Corsairs (500pt -> 1500pt)

My local shop is starting a progression league (mainly for fun and to encourage painting).

In essence, we begin at 500 points and progress 250 each month. The details are still hazy, but you gain points each week based off a variety of factors (painting, how you do, sportsmanship, etc.).

I have a semi-painted Ultramarine army (Essentially done minus the addition of the black reach marines), but I thought for this I would begin a Chaos army.

The models I have currently consists of:

Chaos Battleforce (8 Khorne beserkers, 15 marines, 5 possessed, rhino)

5 terminators (variety in equipment, I believe all power weapons plus some combi-misc and reaper autocannon (bought from friend))

10 chaos marines (1 pf sarge, 1 plasmagun, 1 meltagun, and I believe Khorne banner (bought from same friend))

1 obliterator

1 Huron

Obviously, it is hard to fit much in 500pts, and I imagine others will have the same issues I have. Ideally, I'd like to fit Huron in (Maybe not the best HQ, but the background is obviously nice), and from there I'll fill the rest with troops. I don't see a reason to buy much else for a period of a few months until the points levels rise, but of course the first things I buy will essentially be more rhinos or a land raider (I intend to run mostly assault oriented lists).

With all that said, I suppose I have several questions:

1) Does anyone have any general advice for building a chaos army. For example, when I was building my Space Marine army, I wish I'd known I didn't really care for Scouts. Sure, sniper rifles sound great, but I'd rather just have another squad of Tactical Marines. Or in another case, I wish I'd known I didn't care for Predators (It became a rhino, so no real loss).

2) Offhand, I think I'll run Khorne Icons and grab more Khorne Berserkers at some point. I don't really care for the idea of Plague or Noise Marines (Mostly aesthetic or concept), and Thousand Sons don't seem to fit the way I'd like to run my army. Am I missing out on anything here?

3) Any particularly strong way to run Huron? I mean, it seems like a plan just to throw him with the Berserkers and charge away. No reason to keep him back, and while he is not a monster in CC, he will probably do alright.

4) Again, I'd like to run mostly obliterators at higher points (mostly Deepstriking with my advancing assault forces). Am I missing out by not running Defilers or something else?

Thank you for the help.

1- most people think possessed are over priced (a few disagree), almost no one uses spawn. Other then that go troop heavy and you can't go far wrong.

2- brzrkrs and IoK csm are both good since you want to go hth heavt, but don't underestimate IoCG either. T'sons do not really go well with a khorne based hth army IMO, you don't want your army going in too many directions.

3- I think Huron is pretty good. It's nice to be able to chose between PF and PW, and WT is just icing on the cake (hvy flamer is the candles). I would put him with the IoK csm's (or IoCG csm's if you take them), the brzrkrs are strong enough by themselves, put huron with the csm's then your opponent has to worry about 2 equally dangerous units.

4- I wouldn't DS oblits, why lose those moble lascannons the first few turns ? I wouldn't say you are missing out by not taking defilers, some people like them, others don't, eather way they are not a make your army or break it choice.

good luck, hope this helps.

1. Check out the stickied post called the Aspiring Champion's Handbook, then check the Chaos Lord's Handbook (the tactica section). :)

2. Not really, if Khorne flavour appeals to you, go for it.

3. In a transport of some kind, he's way too slow otherwise.

4. Not really but if you bring both oblits and a defiler or two to the table you might be better off than using pure oblits.

My 2 Kraks.

CSMS's are great and polyvalent. 2-3 good 10 man squads rock. Icons of either Khorne if for assault or Chaos Glory at the least.

Oblits are great. As your army grows you can raise their numbers. But don't deepstrike them, use them as firesupport. Though if truly need be they can go after infantry and occassionally even go CC (but rarely!) they'll be your main tankkillers in any case.

Huron is fine and fluffy.

Berserkers are good. One solid squad or if you expand 2 is fine. 'zerkers really are great CC specialists.

Termies are great, just don't field too many. 1-2 squads.
