Black Reach Renegades

Here are some conversions for my DIY chaos army, the Lost Company of Kadath, that I made from the Black Reach set. My camera battery ran out while taking pics, so I'll post the rest later.

Thats a really good solid bone colour you got there. Kudos to you sir. Tho perhaps you could give the black parts (weapons etc) another dry brush of Boltgun Metal to bring them out a little more. But otherwise thats a very nice colour scheme and some nice painting. Welldone.

I appreciate the replies everyone have given me so far! I've enjoyed reading them!

To answer some questions/comments:

I like the bolder, bright color because it helps them to stand out on the table. While I agree that many chaos forces favor darker colors, I think chaos is more a state of mind than a fashion choice. Just as how some of the traitor legions kept their original heraldry, it's a part of their identity.

To tie slightly in with the above, I left the highlights minimal as my minis tend to receive lots of play and sometimes wind up a bit rough for wear. I think it didn't show as well as could have with my camera, but I assure you they are highlighted! I think because I use a more subtle highlight the camera and light source didn't help it show up very well. This may be most obvious on the terminators. I'll try to take better pics that may showcase this better or have my fiance do it for me, since she can take much better pictures than I.

The WIP backstory for my renegades has them poised as being more self-serving, and yes, a younger fighting force than many of the other factions out there. They majority don't worship chaos such as how the Word Bearers do; the are more like the Iron Warriors in the sense that they are in it for themselves. That's part of the reason for their lack of mutation. The other is that my bits box is on the empty side currently! I may pick up another set at some point to do more extensive conversions, along with some interesting mutations.

As for the chest eagles, I had originally assembled these and were going to paint them as Crimson Fists before changing my mind and adding them to my chaos force. The purity seals and so on were easier to reach, so they came off. The chest eagles were lurking behind the bolters so I decided to leave them on since I didn't want to go to the trouble of removing the guns and putting them back on. The sergeant, now aspiring champion, has his Aquila removed from his since it's right out in the open. He's not finished yet, along with the rest of the squad, but should hopefully make an appearance soon.

They look good, maybe a little too clean...

None of my AoBR marines will be joining the Diseased Sons, I'm trading the lot for more Orks. Next year I hope to get my orks back on the gaming table. I'm painting a Nob for the contest right now... Wash is drying.

Thanks for the compliment Muskie! It's nice to have someone whose work you admire say something nice about your own.

Since a couple of folks have mentioned it so far, what do you mean by the models looking "too clean?" I see a couple of ways to interpret this, so I was hoping for some insight into your opinions regarding this. Also, any tips you might want to drop to dirty (?) them up.

I see it two ways right now: the bright armor color or that they should look more battle worn. Perhaps both. Are either of these correct or is it something else you all mean? I appreciate all the feedback but would simply like the clarification to understand your advice better.
