major buzzmore
OK guys, I have finally bitten the bullet and started a Space Wolf army. Which codex should I use, new Marine codex ? Vassakov
Contact GW Canada for a PDF of the SW codex, then pick up the new SM Codex when it's out. New Codex for anything not in C:SW basically, theres a few threads on how they work. Welcome to the Fang. Have an Ale, and pray to Russ and the All-Father for a new Codex/ decent FAQ! (Sorry, can't say that last bit with a straight face....) Scura
Wow, those are very nice conversions! Very good work! I am just wondering if i could field my ordinary SMs in SP colors without conversions, but after seeing this..... Looking forward to see some of yours painted. Keep goin'! Wolf89
I really like your work. One thing that irritates me is the wolves (goblin wolf riders fit the part the best) but that's no big deal go with what you like most. Also what will these resemble since you're using C:SM for this army? Turning him into a psycher and using the 2 wolves as familiars? I love all the GS work and the cigar/flamer guy is one of my favorites, MAKE ME ONE! Show us more stuff! wiplash
personally im using the SM dextill the SW one gets released cos to be honest there wont be much to change as long as you use SW like bits (so they look like SW but are a C:SM chapter) all you will have to add when C:SW gets released is bloodclaws and maybe buy a few models for weapon modifications other than that you will be good to go (whenever SW gets released anyway) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/146957-wip-space-wolf-army-not-sure-what-codex-to-use/#findComment-1705733 Share on other sites
Marek Grimfang
Using the new Codex Space Marines is a very viable choice. Here is how I have decided to do so: 1.) GH's/Tac Squads using shorter ranged Heavy Weapons to compliment the 24"/12" Bolter ranges, usually the Multi Melta and Heavy Bolter. 2.) BC's/Assault Squads, with Plasma Pistols or Flamers, doesn't matter. Assault Squads can now drop their Jump Pack and use a dedicated Rhino. 3.) LF's/Devastator Squads, just with 5x more Bolter equipped Marines. 4.) Choose a Special Character if you so wish to represent your style of play ie: Shrike. 5.) Frost Blades will now be Relic Blades. I also like the huge amount of various new Troop and Elites choices to represent Wolf Guard or other elite squads. There are ofcourse some distinct trade offs, but it works and I am happy to do it. Wolf89
It's not a bad combination, I think it's easier to make a vanilla dex SW army now than it was in the previous C:SM's. The only thing they had was true grit, but seeing as some of the special characters are really nice and provide extremely useful towards a SW oriented list. Me I'm still sticking to my SW's as per C:SW's, they've still got quite a bite. Vash113
Personally I don't see the new Codex being viable. It just doesn't represent Space Wolves. Tac Squads don't work the way Grey Hunter packs do. Blood Claws are a whole nother story as nothing in the CSM comes close to representing them, not even assault marines. Blood Claw bike squads are another big problem. Long Fangs also are very different from Devastators. I mean whatcha gonna do with the extra 5 Bolter marines when the new SW codex comes out? The whole point of Long Fangs is they sacrifice ablative wounds for splitting fire. Relic Blades also don't represent Frost Blades well as a Frost Blade is still a single handed weapon where as a Relic Blade is 2 handed, meaning a lot less attacks and lets not forget the setup of Wolf Guard bodyguards, Wolf Pelts, Wolf Tooth Necklaces and more. Oh and then there's of course the thing about HQ's. In C:SM your stuck with 2 max but Space Wolves regularly need 3 or more! Ontop of that if your taking Wolf Scouts, the vanilla variety can't hold a candle to the real Wolf Scouts especially with OBEL. Using the vanilla dex loses a lot of character from the army, especially since you can generally pick up the SW dex for next to nothing on ebay. WolfLordLars
I agree with Vash. I bit the bullet myself, rebuilding my terminators even though a new codex next year might ruin that. Its a chance I am willing to take. Scura - I dont care for alot of the 'wolfy' models myself. I generally use traditional marine models with small add-ons like extra knives/pistols/etc. I use my fluff for the reasoning, the CO honors the traditions, but sees them as getting in the way of the combat effectiveness while fighting in cities (his primary venue). But depending on how you out fit your troop choices, they can be similar to how you plated SW's. But ofcourse not 100%. The only other book that seems sort of closer is BA's. Marek Grimfang
Yeah, Death Company could be Wulfen or Bezerk crazed Blood Claws. Im thinking outside of the box here and trying to make 5th Ed work for me rather than being pulled down by the negativity. Frankly Im getting tired of all the bashing on this forum on GW and the various products they are releasing. Ive now heard the B+C being referred to as "Bitching + Complaining". Brother SRM
Why would you ever use the Marine 'dex for Wolves? It's not like Dark Angels, where the existing codex is garbage and it's easy to change around - Wolves are far different than codex marines! Also, our codex is kickass, for lack of better term. We get some of the new toys to boot! Yet probably the only other chapter to benefit as much from this as the Wolves is probably the BT and they have their own herd of complainers and doomsdayers as well. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/146957-wip-space-wolf-army-not-sure-what-codex-to-use/#findComment-1706436 Share on other sites

Wolf89
I'm complaining... I want 13th company back!!! :) Our codex is better in 5th than it was in 4th, and it seems there's more complaining now... Vash113
Yea I don't get it either, the Wolves of Fenris rock even more now than they did before, I don't understand all the complaining and codex jumpers... makes no sense to me. Oh well while others may run to C:SM I'll just laugh and drown my enemies in a tide of Blood Claws and Fenresian Wolves, mwahahahahaha! Hmm... time for some more mead I think.
