Runic Charms

I've been playing Wolves since June 08, and one of the first bits of awesome I found was the runic charm. Rerollable armor save? Sign me up! I had these on all my Wolf Guard in Terminator armor, and the guys were nigh invulnerable. Well, I glanced through the armory in my Space Wolf 'dex one day to find that there was no little "T" indicating that they could be taken by Wolf Guard Terminators. There was a T next to the Runic Charm on the non-Wolf Guard list, but not on the Wolf Guard list. In other words, Wolf Guard in power armor can take charms, and Independent characters in Terminator armor can take runic charms, but the middle ground, Wolf Guard in Terminator armor can not.

I rectified this and stopped taking them on my Wolf Guard Termies, but I still hear from Wolves here and there that they use charms on their Termies. Is this a misprint/oversight in my codex, or is it actually illegal to take charms on my Wolf Guard in Terminator armor?

Yea it's a one time deal, and it's only the armor save, not the invulnerable.

What I use is little stones, (somewhat shiny in nature and rounded) to resemble my runic charms, then as I use each one I put it away, (almost like some SoB players use for Faith points). It helps me keep track.

As lars said, it's in the FAQ.

Bedsides.... compare it to the price for terminator honors, and then remember that it doesnt actually help you offensively. Offense is almost always costed more than defense, wich is funny as defense is historicly the harder to produce. *Shrugs*

In any case I dont think its overpowering at all. We have to pay more, and were supposed to be tougher, than the average marine- termi or otherwise. This helps represent it without all the power of an actual second wound.

I mean shoot, just look at the 1kS terminators... talk about expensive.

I love the look on someone's face when I finally roll that 1 on that 2+ save... then gladly re-roll it and save my precious terminator.

I also love when someone asks why I have assault terminators mixed with shooting ones and how is that illegal, then I gladly explain, going through costs, wargear options, the works, and then you see their army avoiding my unit like it was the plague.

Oh, I'd like to think I'm a grey hunter, or even a WGL for a grey hunter squad, but then I wake up and see a dreadnought and I think "gotta git it!". <_<

Something similar happened to me once. Some kid started going on and on about how I couldnt field X, Y, and Z because the C:SM said so. I let him go on for about 5 minutes, acting like he was really knowledgeable (I think he was 16?), nodding the whole time. Then, in order, I addressed every issue with a page of the Space Wolf codex.

He couldnt believe any of it.. not the mixed terminators, the wargear, the PW+PF in each GH pack (PLUS a WGBL), even the Leman Russ.

The best part? He was pissed because someone told him that the Space Wolves sucked as an army when he started, so he didnt even bother looking at them.

Alot of guys at my store dont even think of them as an army... they figure theyre a white dwarf article like the Blood Angels. *snorts* But none have tried to tell me I couldnt field something.... Im known for being really honest from my eldar.

I had a lot of people come up to me and say things like "You can't take 3 assault cannons in a terminator squad" and "Combi weapons? Like Chaos has?" along with the aforementioned "Close combat and shooty termies in the same squad?" at which point I refer them over to the armory page in the 'dex.

Once again, thanks for addressing the runic charm issue, my terminators can go back to their old survivable selves!

On a closely related topic, has anyone else noticed that (with the demise of FAQ 4.1) the Wolf Priest's Healing Potions now work on invulnerable and cover saves? The only requirement is that you must be careful about the order in which you roll your saves because it must be the first failed save.

If it is true that the HP&B allow you to roll for invlneralbe and cover sames? Anyone not taking this option is a loco wolf.

This news has made my WP on a bike even more valuable to my BCs, now the squad can turbo boost and still use the HP&B. outstanding.

It says "Saving throw". At the time it meant cover saves and invulnerable saves, I have no problem with going back to that- Ill note that also means cover saves in the new edition where they are seperate things. Sorry... but going from a 2+ to a 5+ is rough enough... let the balms work like they should. For 25 points its not much to ask.

Put the RAW in a 3rd edition context- there was armor saves, invulnerable saves, and IIRC dodge saves... all were considered "saving throws" when you "threw" the dice. My codex specificly says a failed "saving throw" may be ignored.... so I considered that to be cover saves, invulnerable saves, armor saves.... everything. One guy, who plays chaos btw, even told me he could see it as meaning the save from wolf tails! though I dont agree with that one... I can see it.
