Kobrakei
Hey guys, Just been working on my first robed tactical squad after finding a really quick way to get them to tabletop standard, so thought I'd throw them up here and see what you all think http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b167/burnthecitydown/DSCN1472.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b167/burnthecitydown/DSCN1473.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b167/burnthecitydown/DSCN1474.jpg These guys are meant for tabletop, and I'm ever so slightly lazy to do any highlighting, so just using the new washes to shade them and they're ready to go! elijahdprophet
Very cool. Robes are still a sore spot in my painting. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/147798-robes-win/#findComment-1714842 Share on other sites
Cl4d
Dry brushing robes is a bad thing I suggest you to never do it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/147798-robes-win/#findComment-1714864 Share on other sites

boreas
It gives a chalky look. The better way is to paint them bleached bone and then successive brown washes(ie very diluted brown ink, ogryn flesh wash or such). Make every wash thin and repeat until you get the desired result... Shiodome
drybrushing is fine is the aim is a quick gaming ready army. it's not always appropriate to use the 'better' but slower methods. I quite agree. One should never say never to a painting technique. Although, quite frankly, washing, in the case of robes, is actually a bit faster. Once the models are done solid bleached bone, before you close shop for the night, take 2 minutes to do a wash and let dry overnight. Repeat the next time you paint if needed. A heavier wash, although not as subtle, will still give very good tabletop look. Drybrushing them without spilling over the other surfaces (especially the dark green where it will show) is longer and harder! May i ask how long it took to paint per model ? Cheers Mithril Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/147798-robes-win/#findComment-1715566 Share on other sites

Kobrakei
Hey guys...Thanks for all the feedback Mithril - They take around about 2 hours a guy, but I've been batch painting them up so I've been knocking out 3 guys a night. I'd say it's the most I've painted in a long long time. Cl4d - I nver used to be a fan of drybrushing, but it was a case of find a quick way to paint the robes or genuinly consider selling them as I was never happy with the results. Of course, if I had the patience to layer them correctly , I'd have honestly done it that way as I believe it, in the long run, does give a better result  Boreas - I've done all the drybrushing fist, then painted on the other colours. I was worried about spilling onto the robes and ruining the colours on that, but then I fond that Kommando Khaki is a very good match for the colour of the robes, so luckily enough I can cover the mistakes. They look pretty chalky in the photos which shocked me as they look nowhere near as chalky in real life, but we all know the camera picks up every little detail :D Thanks guys! Ompfris
Your robes look good - I've started doing mine with a basecoat of 'DenabStone' then a heavy wash with 'Sepia' then for very very quick highlights i just run over the raised ridges with 'Bleached Bone'. Since its starting to get cold in the evenings I place the minis on a shelf over the radiator after applying the wash just so I can finish the robes that night and not have to come back the next day. and wow what a drybrushing arguement.... I always used to drybrush my robes untill the washes came out, I found the wash took a lot less skill then drybrushing, I just slop it on and its done!
