DIY Black Reach Marines

I worked a little bit on my AOBR marines this weekend and found a rather simple, quick and effective paint scheme for them. My thanks go to kobrakei for his excellent bone painting tutorial.

I want this army to have a little bit of ancient Egyptian influence to it and I think the colors pull it off a little.

I don't have a name for the chapter yet but was thinking along the lines of "The Guardians of Osiris" or "The Emperors Hawks".

Also I don't have a chapter badge for them yet but was thinking about using this,

Here is my first terminator and first 2 WIP marines

Looking really nice there...glad I could help! As for naming them, with the Egyptian Gods, there are so many you could literally take any name you liked and it would fit in. However, I would suggest filling out a bit more background to get a feel for these guys, and see where that leads you on the name

Kobrakei

Here's what I was thinking for background.

Shortly before the Age of Apostasy the high lords of terra began to get more experimental with Space Marine creation, As seen starting in the 13th Founding and leading up to the 21st founding.

My marine chapter along with several others was founded sometime in this period. The High Lords wanted to know what type of chapter command structure would lead to the most effective and loyal fighting force. Was it the traditional command with captains, librarians and chaplains? Were captains needed or could Chaplains and librarians effectively lead a chapter, or were they detrimental to the chapter ideology and operation. Seeking to answer these questions the High Lords decreed the 16th founding and started several chapters using the Imperial Fists Gene Seed. They took the various command structures from Loyal decendants of the Imperial fists to start the chapters and give them experienced leadership.

The first chapter was to have the traditional command structure and serve as a control for the experiment.

The second chapter was to be given to the command of an experienced Librarian and Chaplain

The Third Chapter was given to an experienced Chaplain only

The fourth chapter was neither given librarians or chaplains but was to lead by only hardened veterans and captains particularly adept at training scouts and infiltrators.

The experiment was to last for several hundred years and the results would influence how new chapters were founded. The chapters were unaware of each other and their common heritage and the records detailing their creation were to be sealed until the experiment was evaluated several hundered years after it began. Unfortunately the evaluation never came as the records of the creation were destroyed on Terra during the Age of Apostasy. After the Apostasy was ended the chapters continued to fight for the Imperium although the true purpose of their creation was never realized.

The chapters evolved very distinct personalities and styles of fighting over the years.

Chapter 1 with its normal command structure carries on the tradition of the Imperial fists and stubbornly fights the enemies of man still today. They are an unremarkable chapter and adhere closely to the codex astartes.

Chapter 2(my egyptian themed chapter) has taken on a distinct flavor. Due to the early influence of their chaplains and librarians the chapter imploys a large number of Librarians that lead the various battle companies instead of captains. They are also know for their fanatical loyalty to the emperor that over the years has been edging close to god worship rather than the veneration of a patriach. They prefer ranged combat and rely on overwhelming fire power rather than assaults to destroy the enemy. They have a strange relationship with death and believe that through dreadnoughts the souls of their departed brothers can fight on. Their master of the chapter is a venerable Librarian interred in a dreadnought.

Chapter 3 under the leader ship of their brave chaplain took on a crusade to destroy the traitor legions of space marines in the eye of terror some 400 years after their founding. They have not been sighted in almost 5000 years and are presumed destroyed.

Chapter 4 (another chapter I hope to make soon) favors drop pod assualts and hit and run tactics. They do not use chaplains or librarians and favor ambushes and infiltration to destroy the enemy rather than direct attacks. (I'll flesh out some more details when I have time)

So basically this is an outline for 2 chapters I hope to eventually start. #'s 2 and 4. I think they could represent the dual nature of the space marines. Chapter 2 the knightly warriors in pristine armor with the best weapons and an unshakable faith in the emperor leading frontal assaults into impossible odds, and Chapter 4 the marines operating away from supplies with few numbers in dirty and damaged armor using surgical hit and run strikes to tear the enemy apart.

I really like it,

Liking how the colours are fitting together. Looks really good. The Bleached bone is looking nice, going to have a look for that tut now. See if I can leach some info from it

As for the name. I would suggested doing some research into which god you like the most, then using the idea of that god for your chapter (If it's Ra then have something to do with the sun on them somewhere) but to totally polish them off. I would suggest putting some Egyptian glyphs on them like on that Termy badge or on the Marine's knee pad.

-Shadow

Vanguard of Osiris

Shield of the Nile

Reachguard (like Reichguard but not..)

Talons of the Emperor

Desert Storm (pun?)

Desert Claws

You have to remember, the word 'knight' wouldn't have existed for them, fluff speaking. It's hard to come up with desert themed marines without breaking out stereotypical sounding things..

Finished some marines. Things are going slow, school is very time consuming.

Thanks for looking.

C&C welcome.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello all,

I have a little bit of time off for the winter and decided to spend some of it catching up on my painting.

I have some WIP of the BR termies, an assault sqd, the BR dread, and an old school whirlwind. Hopefully I can get these all done tomorrow and start some work on my PH Emperor's Children, but the painting is going slower then expected. The assault marines were old BTs from high school and I tried to salvage them as well as i could but they were pretty beat up to begin with. Hopefully with a little love and some washes they will be up to table top quality.

I know these are not the best pictures but let me know if you see anything that needs some extra attention. Thanks for looking and happy holidays.

Finished the dread. Almost done with the termies and the assault sqd. Fingers crossed I can get them done tonight.

Thanks for looking. C&C welcome as always.

Since I've had some experience with the whole Egyptian theme idea, I figured I'd put in my two cents. Chapter badges are hard because of the scale you will be working at. You need to keep it simplified so it is easy to paint and so that it is recognizable even when reduced to the size of a shoulderpad. Your initial idea for the symbol is problematic because once reduced it will look more like an oblong blob. In any case this should be decided after you have a name chosen so it can better represent the name.

Egyptian influences also make for some difficulty in the 40k universe with the token 1k Sons and the main deceased bad dude being named horus. This elminates the udjat eye and falcon as acceptable to loyalists and it makes the nemes coloring difficult to use without confusion. It also elimiates horus being used anywhere in the chapter name giving a bit of guidelines to work within.

In my chapter, for example, I translated the name into middle egyptian and then wrote them in hierglyphic which made it a bit easier to bring in the egyptian theme without getting stuck on the actual words or being limited by the names of deities. This also allowed me to bring in egyptian elements for the banners and other nomenclature by creating names with authentic egyptian feel. Although this is effective, it does present quite a bit of work by the time you complete the entirity of the fluff so it might not be a route you want to take. Alternativly you can find particular elements that would be accurate to egyptian culture and then apply them to the name. Themes like sons, stewards, and keepers would all be fitting to the Egyptian nomenclature and are derived from various inscriptions such as Nesew-Sah-Khetef (King's son of his body), or imy-er-per (steward of the house, lit. He that is in the mouth of the house). Attached to these words other attributes can be attached from egyptian mythology or language to complete the name. Here words like Netjer (god), pet (Sky, heavens), Kemet (the black land), Medew (words), or Ma'at(truth) could be used resulting in things like

Sons of Kemet

Stewards of Netjer

Keepers of the Heavens

or Guardians of Truth

Back to your mini's though, I think you've done a good job with the coloring keeping it fairly representative of the pallete that was available to the ancient artisans, though I might say that your red needs to be framed in either gold or yellow to make it feel more cohesive. Perhaps a more brown red would work better too with the blues. If you do add glyphs, make sure that you use accurate reference for them and perhaps even use a few words or phrases to put here or there.

Thanks for the input Vaaish. I really do need to hammer out some fluff for these guys. I just haven't found anything really inspiring yet to get me off my ass and write some stuff. You were also right about the chapter badge, i tried painting it on a terminator and it looks pretty bad, so I either need to get some transfer paper or pick a more suitable badge.

I'll try and think up some fluff in the next week and hopefully that can help with the narrowing down on a name and badge for the army.

But in the mean time I finished the assualt squad.

Also here is the finished Sgt from AOBR. I'm thinking that he could use some face paint/decorations to help reinforce the desert theme. I've been watching "Rome" and some of the face paint the Egyptians wear is very interesting, but I don't know if i could tanslate it to a model very well.

Thanks for looking. Hopefully I'll have some terminators to put up by this evening, they are about 75% done right now.

Finished the Termies. Still have to drill their barrels but I will get to that later.

Thats all for a while. I'm headed to New Orleans for New Years. Thanks for looking and I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday.
