Equiping Captains

Being new to the hobby, i have to ask about the prospects of a storm bolter wielding SM captain. Unless i am mistaken the storm bolter is a two-handed weapon, but on the box that said captain comes in there is a power armored captain holding a chainsword and a storm bolter. Is this game-legal, or just cool looking?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

The codex is your guide to what is legal or not, although quite a few people are suffering from edition hangover and just general misconceptions.

Yes, a storm bolter and a close combat weapon is perfectly legit. There are no restrictions based on how many hands are needed, only based on whether the army list entry says you need to replace an item or can simply add it. If I remember correctly, the captain has 2 weapons that can each be swapped for a list of ranged and CC weapons (as well as items like storm shields).

If you are having trouble getting your head around what a captain can have, take a look at command squads. They do not need to swap a weapon to get a shield so can have an obscene amount of kit.

A captain with a stormbolter and cc weapon is far from the dodgiest combo these new liberal rules allow though. Plenty of codices have allowed for at least a 2 handed gun and a CC weapon. This one has bolter and bolt pistol for most troops, which is the same principal.

Besides, unless he has a pistol as well (can't remember but I think he traded it to get the stormbolter), the chainsword ain't gonna do him much good anyway and would be no more than decorative. A special close combat weapon on the other hand, whilst still not at all broken, would at least be of some use.

With the dawn of the 5th edition codex marines have once again discovered the obscure piece of wargear: The Holster! And closely related items such as the scabbard and the weapon sling!

Besides, real marines are strong enough to fire a stormbolter with one hand.
