Challenge 1: Super-Space Marines

Creating a super-hero/villain themed chapter

Why? Two of the main problems with DIY chapters are over-theming and, on the flipside, the lack of a theme…obviously theme is very hard to balance. Over-theming entails the writer attempting to shove the theme of the chapter down the readers’ throat at every available opportunity. Under-theming or the lack of a theme entirely leaves a chapter just the bare facts without any character. This challenge uses Super-heroes as we all love them and it will be easy to over theme the chapter.

Tip. I’ll use one of my favourite characters for two examples; Cyclops. A bad Cyclops chapter would fire optic blasts from their red quartz lenses, hail from a planet called Xaviar Institute which is full of orphans and have all characters have the surname Summers. On the flip side, a good Cyclops chapter would take his essence and form that into a chapter. His courage, honour, leadership and strict battle discipline. His general awesomeness will have to be worked in as well along with the fact that throughout all of the X-men incarnations it is Cyclops who stays truest to Xavier’s teachings. So in fact, you have the Ultramarines.

Specific Rules:

None bar the distinction of a super-character. We could get into a long discussion about what defines a super-hero/villian but I'll attempt to keep it simple. Use your common sense. If you think a character might be on the edge, then PM one of the Mods and they'll get back to you.

In addition, when submitting your article please include who the chapter is based upon.

So do we have to include the actual hero/villain or not? Also how do we submit? I've never done this before.

In the Chapter, no. Articles are submitted by PMing myself with the article included in the PM. I would just like the PM to be titled: Challenge 1 (or some shorthand): Cyclops/Blade etc. Basically I want to play a little game afterwards were we see how many people can guess the basis of each chapter.

Cool.

Do we name the hero/villain that we are theming our chapter on?

f not, then many chapters will be quite similar if everyone does superman or batman...

Can it be loyalist or renagade?

Do we submit a picture as well?

When is the deadline?

Im soo excited!

Captain Kael :)

Two more question and I'll be all set.

1) Do these have to be western super-heroes or can we use manga heroes for epic irony? (irony does not mean funny in this case)

2) This is probably pushing the rules, but can we use as origin a team of heroes that have one superpower, but distinct personalities, or are we going for single personality overall? What I mean is, imagine a team of Iron Men, they all have same suit as Tony Stark, but they are vastly different personalities. (I'm using this as an unrealistic example not to give away the team I'm thinking of)

@Captain Kael

Here is a link for preliminary info thread

Do we name the hero/villain that we are theming our chapter on?

Only when you send me the PM, so you don't have to get dibs on a hero.

Can it be loyalist or renagade?

Your call (so, what ever you want)

Do we submit a picture as well?

If you want pictures in your article yes.

When is the deadline?

20th October 2:30 AM (GMT Summertime)

As long as they are super-heroes, then can be from eastern art. Using my limited knowledge of anime I will use two examples. The General from Ghost in the Shell is not a super-hero whilst the Elric brothers have a special powers that seperates from normal humans so do count.

You can use a team of Super-Heroes, such as the Avengers or X-Men.

does the char we base the chapter off of have to be popular, or can we use like backwater low key chars?

I will draw the line at they must have published work you can buy. This rules out any web-comics which aren't massive.

oh and uumm reminder could you tell me when the contest ends?

See above.

Only when you send me the PM, so you doubt have to get dibs on a hero.

Do you need to PM the mods in advance to get dibs on the hero? Can't more than one member do their Chapter on the same Chapter?

I think that "doubt" is meant to be "don't". You only PM if you are not sure if your chararcter qualifies as a hero/villain.

Yeah, massive typo on my behalf. I'll try and make this clear.

You only send me one PM which contains your article. This is your submission. If you would mind entitling your submission with the name of the hero, we can check that you've kept to the spirit of the competition, make sure you've used a super hero/villian and play a game at the end.

You *might* need to PM me if you are not sure if your choice of hero classifies as a 'super' hero. Yes, we could end up with 5000 Spiderman chapters...

Did I somehow miss the bit in the instructions where we need to play a game with the Chapter as well, or is Ferrata's clever wording all too clever for my tired brain?

No, it is me be lax with my wording. Basically, the idea at the end of this challenge is have a little quiz where people guess which characters each chapter is based on. There is nothing to win in this quiz, just a little bit of bragging rights and so people can see how hidden or obvious their character choice was.

so quickly do we have to write a chapter thing like

Orgin/Colour Scheme/etc.

so what do you have to do?

i am confused about that

so really i would like to know so then i can get on with it

do with have to write a kinda Index Asartes?

or do we write a story about them

i don't know once i know i shall start

thanks

Athiair ;)

oh thanks so i could be really anything (aslong as it is belivable in 40K) as long is it about a chapter created based on a hero/villain

does that hero/villain have to have some part in the chapter history or not?

thanks sorry for the double question

Athiair ;)

Dose the super hero have to be male?

I'm not a mod or one of the contest organizers, but nothing at all in the challenge text implies any gender restrictions. After all, you're using your hero as the theme - you're not supposed to make a Chapter of little mini-Storms or Black Canaries. So whatever gender (male, female, or other) the thematic inspiration has shouldn't be a real issue.

flint is correct, you don't have to base the chapter on a male character. Now whether if they chapter itself is male is a long debate which we will not get into. Another point, I keep getting the feeling that some people feel like you need to create models for this chapter, you don't.
So many good choices, but to help narrow it down, I'm wondering how will the entries be scored?

It's a darksome and arcane rite performed by the Moderators beneath the light of a waning moon, involving blood sacrifice and appeals to the thousand children of Shub-Niggurath.

Okay, so it's actually voting, as specified in the original post.
