DA Forgeworld Ven Dread WIP *updated Oct 26*

Hey all just thought i'd share what I'm working on right now. I still have alot of layering to do but this is it with most of the base colours on.

The tin bitz is a base coat for gold, so most of the trim will be gold. The parchments are going to be green.

I'm a little bit unconvinced about the chest eagle I originally wanted to go with a bone colour but now i'm thinking i'll be dissappointed with it because it will blend into the body of the model too much.

Open to any suggestions, questions, comments etc.

Nice solid, opaque bone there! As a former/kinda into it DW/DA/RW player, I know how much of a pain it is to get that. (unless you have an alternative way, then share!)

...Just bothered to read the previous comments =-D. I used to use dheneb stone, but I found that it was a bit too pinkish for me. For that chest eagle, try red. Or maybe a green?

The base is nice too, but a tad plain? ...though, you don't want too much, or you'll take away from the dready! =-D

Thanks guys. I was thinking of adding a few things to the base, maybe a small pinch of static grass, and some casings maybe.

Yes red might work in the centre. Green would too but I am trying to keep from using too much green since the parchments are going to be green and so will the angel of death on the sarcophagus.

I might be able to try a metallic gold or silver for the chest eagle, what do you all think?

Bullet casings would work great!

Maybe a silver would work nice, try doing a normal marine chest first. In my opinion, and personal experience, metallics don't work very well for chest eagles. (my painting skills aren't the best.)

Maybe...a metallic red?

Heh yeah I'm still using some of the old pots. They sure do go a long way! They never dry out either!

I honestly think those pots are probably about 10 years old. Anyways much more to come - i'm thinking about making the chest eagle a stone effect that way I won't be saturating my model with too many "Dark Angels" trademark colours.

Looking great so far ;)

i see your point on the chest eagle....a tricky one indeed -_- my first thoughts were to do a strikingly rich Gold color as that will work well with the bone and also will balance the model with gold being both on the sides and centre, ultimately its your decision(good luck)

Ah...Dheneb stone(what a DW life saver that color is now)

it will be great to see this finished Get painting

Mithril

More pics!

I cleaned up the legs, attached them to the base, the torso is just set on the legs, not glued yet - still much to do on it.

Legs are close to finished but I still have some highlighting to do on them.

Went with the stone effect on the chest - seems to be working out.

really lovely work there Dark Vengeant. the ForgeWorld Venerable dreadnought looks amazing and i like the hue for the bone alot, looks really smooth. i also like the way you painted the chest eagle and the DA symbols. im really liking how this is going so ill be following this thread to completion.

best regards

Looking really good.

I'm really glad you choose to go for a stone type colour on the chest eagle and on the DA symbols,it really works and looks great.

Looking very forward to seeing this awesome dread finished, and i have to say viewing the pics really makes me want to buy a FW dread! :P

Thanks for the comments guys I appreciate them. I am hoping to get more work done including some bone highlights tonight.

I am still trying to figure out in my head what I'm going to do with the parchments I know they will be green but I am trying to figure out designs to go on them to add a little decorative touch to them. Obviously script but I am thinking lines, or patterns might add something.

Why do you use the Tin Bitz basecoat for gold? I've been using Iyanden Darksun lately and I find it makes the gold seem rather soft, so I'm interested in finding another way to do it.

I use tin bitz because it makes for very dark recesses.

I use this layering recipe -

Tin bitz

Black wash

brazen brass (if desired not necessary)

dark gold (forget the name)

light gold (again forget I always mix up shining gold and the other)

light gold mixed with a touch of mithril silver (if you want really bright highlights)

I got the new wash set and I'm pretty impressed with the black, brown and green washes. I normally make my own but I thought i'd give them a try.

Any suggestions on what colour to use on the DA insignia on the left side of the sarcophagus? I was thinking red, because the scrolls are green right beside it. I can't paint the markings green or it will look really out of place.

Another option:

The other day I was thinking, what if I painted the backdrop on both sides black, and then the angel, skulls, and DA insignia would really pop out. Any thoughts? Would black be too "chaosy" for DA?

I like the black idea.

It would really make the DA iconography stand out,and with all the seals and da symbols it wont look chaosy.

If you choose to keep it as it is,i say paint the symbols red for contrast.

Hope you go with the black idea though!
