As the title suggests is it worth it to give a squad of 5 scouts melta bombs. I have a 1000 pt tourney coming up soon and I am considering running a squad of 5 scouts, 2xPP 1 Melta gun. the rest bolt pistol CCW. What do you think, is it worth the 20 extra points? Does not seem all that likely that I would be assaulting a vehicle when I come in on the table edge seeing as 3 good weapons in the rear armor should do the trick. Or so I hope. Please tell me what you think and I shall post my 1000pt list soon for critiques. As you said, you have a plethora of firepower going into rear armor of anything sitting near the board edge. I personally run 1xpp, 1x mg, 2xpw, 2x shotguns on 6 scouts with frags. I have a couple melta bombs modeled in there in case I feel I want to spend the extra points on it, but I have 2 high str assault weaps on rear armor, and even if that doesnt work, I can assault w/ lots of attacks and, considering tanks in the back are usually stationary, auto hit and get at least a couple 6's in there to glance it into submission. Meltas are nice, but yeah...I dont know if they are worth the points, especially at 1000 pts. Just remember if you do take them, you dont have to equip them to the whole squad. "any model may be given meltabombs", not "the squad may be equipped with melta bombs". As for where the extra points could be spent, you would have to post a list for me to give any advise there. Vassakov Posted October 14, 2008 Share Posted October 14, 2008 That set up it isn't necessary. Mine are 2x PW, PP and WGPL with Twin Claws. Designed to get up close and personal ASAP. They get meltabombs because they're more likely to need them. Also: make a Baneblade player cry with 5 Automatic Melta hits. Kaboom. Doesn't happen often but if in one game you can manage a dual charge on a vehicle/vehicle or vehicle squad it can really hurt and your scouts are still protected. This does happen more than you think, reason being, many players that have tanks sitting back will leave a squad right behind or next to them in case you come in to shoot the tank. Most don't realize that if you shoot them, and you move on correctly, it frees you up to shoot the squad, and charge them and the tank giving you a chance to cause some real damage. And having shot the squad that would have handled you in if you focused on the tank, you are much more likely to tough it out with them and kill the tank. A gamble that's well worth the 20 pts in my opinion. Wolf89 Posted October 15, 2008 Share Posted October 15, 2008 One time I got my SW scouts behind a leman russ, and got a dual charge in with some unlucky rough riders... they aren't rough if you didn't already know that. The melta bombs were in favor that tournament, but I could see them not being as used in 5th... Alot of good information in that one. worth the read. I find 2pp and 1mg does fairly well against rear armor. I run 5 scouts other, 2 have SGs which of course have 2 shots each at rear armor. Melta bombs have never been good to me in past games. wish SGs were classified as Bolters for true grit rules.
