taLLis
wow thank guys :D i did notice that khorne symbol on the bolt pistol on the pictures lol, it has been removed and that thing coming out his mouth is supposed to be a tongue, hopefully it'll look a bit more like one once painted, i'll just add here that this is my first bit of gs work other than filling gaps as for the purple i am really happy with it, here a small guide 1. Start with a black undercoat, 2. followed by a mix of 1: chaos black 1: Liche purple, i did actually leave the recesses as the base black, so that the overall finish would be darker, 3. Then three more layers, each time a little more Liche purple until it is pure liche purple (which is the third layer), (I would add in there that the stages above are all done as washes, starting in the recesses and dragging the paint out toward the edge), 4. This would be just liche purple, it was done before but that was a wash so this is to add a more solid colour for the highlighted edges, 5. Next are the final highlights, i did between two/three but i can't actually remember. All it is, is liche purple with skull white (about 3:1), then the subsequent highlights just add slightly more white to the mix (sorry my mixtures arn't to exact) After that to tie the layers together with a wash of delvan mud! hence the slight shine. I hope this is alright :) Warforger: these guys are just for the chess board and probably wont be used in an army Thanks for all your comments guys, tal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1755342 Share on other sites
Varney
Devlan Mud? Awesome, I would have never thought of that. Thanks for the instructions. As for the minis themselves, I really like the dynamism of the Chaplain and Bolter marines. They really look like they are rushing forward! StormDragon
Those two test models look good, not too fussy, just really well painted. I can't wait to see some pictures of the whole chess set when it is done. Your dad is a lucky man getting a gift like that. taLLis
Made a start on the chaos terminators (castles), i havn't inked them yet but am happy with the way they are coming along http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P211108_1415.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P211108_1416.jpg I think one last very small highlight before inking and then the purple with be finished on these - tal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1778786 Share on other sites
taLLis
Some WIP on the Chaos Pawns here http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P261108_123701.jpg http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P261108_1238.jpg As you can see i have moved away from using the walking legs from the fantasy set, looking back on the idea i think that it would have looking slightly unbalanced next to the loyalists with running legs, 1. because the chaos guys would have been taller and 2. the chaos fellas looked like they were strolling into battle You can also see that there is a little more variation here, i wanted to portray a force that is less drilled and disciplined, which i think chaos would do to you after 10,000 years http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P261108_1239.jpg Few things left to do with these guys such as remove the mold lines on the backpacks and i bit of filing in other areas but they are pretty much ready to paint! One last thing, after some thought and input i am not going to be using the lord with jump pack model for the king, but a heavily converted version of the TERMINATOR LORD ZHUFOR which can be seen here, http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/wezhu.htm , he will still have the same idea as before with the large use of speakers etc etc but he wont be floating, i've changed the idea to keep some coherency between the two kings who will be in terminator armour. - tal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1785131 Share on other sites
captain kantor
that is really one of the best ideas ever. i would never even think of this! your dad is a luck man getting this stuff. but who are you going to use for the queen? captain kantor
and one quick piece of advice, are you going to keep the bases on them? because, if they are that big than your going to need a bigger board. besides that, everything is just totally cool! cathar the great
I do hope you have some good plans for the board itself. Putting such awesome minis on a simple cardboard chess board would be an awful waste Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1785694 Share on other sites
Shortsonfire79
I was going to do this once..but I wanted to use all metal minis, as I felt that the weight would feel better to the hand. For the board, I was going to put Chaosy symbols on half, and Imperial Aquilas and stuff on the other. Maybe you could make it like a real game board, with fine sand, painted black and white. Or...in your case, purple and white, and gray and black.. =-P I dunno..I was just building off of ideas. Master Toddius
Love the smart use of GW shoulder pads. Makes life alot easier and creates a huge amount of extra detail. The purples and golds of the CSM look great. Its rare to see a thread that shows the progress of both the yin and yang of each other. Very entertaining. :D Good work. Keep pressing forward. taLLis
Cheers guys, :D The chessboard is coming along nicely i believe, it is being made by my Grandad and i havn't had a chance to see it as of yet. When i originally told him of the idea he said he would love to do the base. It is going to be quite a large board, and will incorporate colours relating to the theme of each army. As you guys have said, theres no point going through the trouble of a project like this and then slapping it on a naff base. I think it feels very special that my grandad is helping out with it. As for the bases all the models with be on 35mm 'large round bases' made by GW, they will be raised though by about 1.5cm using cork. I am still struggling with ideas for what to put on them but was thinking maybe a marble finish. I am open to suggestions though! captain kantor: The queen on the Loyalist side will be Celestine the living saint and on the chaos side will be The Masque but she will have wings to balance out the sizes of the two models. Master Toddius: Thanks matey, i wanted to really enjoy doing this project and not feel at any point that it was a pain, doing white can be like that sometimes so i am just moving between the two sides a bit :) - tal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1786316 Share on other sites

taLLis
Started work on one of the assault marines, the white is finished and i think is a great improvement on the pawns so far, i kept more shading in the recesses and my blending is a bit smoother. it's a shame the camera washes the colours out so much :( Unfortunately not much progress overall as the 3rd year uni work is piling up before christmas. I also tried to do a bit of NMM on the assault pack harness and chains, this was my first attempt at doing it and i think it came out reasonably well ish http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P301108_142001.jpghttp://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P301108_1414.jpg Any input on this model would be greatly appreciated as i feel i have improved with it even though it is still no where near finished, i am starting to realise that white is a bugger to paint  Again sorry for the poor picture quality taken on a naff phone again, i couldn't take a good picture of it so i've put up to mediocre ones -_- - tal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1789854 Share on other sites
Sarr
A thought I had, why not stick the dudes on WFB bases as opposed to 40k? I think it'd work better with the squares of the chessboard. Just my 2 cents, though, it'll look amazing either way. Boomsly
i agree that square bases would still keep with the chess theme better than round bases on a sqaured board. excellent idea and good progress so far Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1789903 Share on other sites
taLLis
Another update here, getting there with this chaos terminator, this i my first real try at nmm gold, i felt my blending improved dramatically on the loyalist assault marine and i think it has paid off here, i do think it may need one more highlight but i am still very happy. The light source is over his left shoulder, so the right hand side in the picture, will be keeping the same for all the chaos side obviously and for the loyalists it will be on their right Any comments on it will be greatly appreciated as i am hopefully going to use the same technique for the whole project and do really want to nail it for my dad http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P011208_1735.jpghttp://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k420/ddsmith1_photos/P011208_1736.jpg As for the bases i get what you guys are saying, i think i am going to knock up a test for each shape as i am still not decided Again all help is very appreciated all the best, tal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/149172-an-almighty-battle/page/2/#findComment-1791079 Share on other sites
