Ragnar Blackmane model!

Hey guys, I'm making fairly steady progress, I've still to bring the hair up to blond, all the rest of the NMM and a whole load of other things but I'm struggling on a few specifics...

I was thinking of paining a icon, maybe Ragnar's Coy mark, on the knee pad then having a NMM in the background?

I'm not sure what to write in runes on the sword, I've decided in my head that writing "Blackmane", "Ragnar" or something might be a bit narcissistic?

I'm going to put a classic Space wolf on the back of his sword hand?

The name of the sword is "frostfang." You could write that. I've seen that on past versions of the model.

Really solid work. You might want to two-tone the pelt a little. I find that really sets off the detail.

Very nice!

You should spend some time on the pelt. A lot of good painters just paint tails and pelts grey. You should really blend from dark on the middle to light under the belly. Grey or brownish. Have a look at wg vrox' profile pic, or just google "wolf". It adds a lot! It actually makes the pelt look like a pelt, and not just a grey rug.

That said, I guess this particular wolf is supposed to be "black maned", whatever that implies.

That's what I meant. Here are some pics of pelts that I have done:

Black Mane refers to the fact that the wolf pelt is going to be mostly black if not Solid Black. Remember that the black wolves of fenris are the biggest and often are pack alphas.... thats part of why its so impressive that Ragnar slew one as an initiate.

Looks great! keep up the good work :)

Maverick makes a pretty good point. The Bill King novels are very good. They're not very consistent with the older fluff, however. Not sure if it's a big deal. It probably just means you can paint Ragnar any damn way YOU see fit. If you want him to have black hair, just change it. (why not Bill King did) Or if you prefer to use the older fluff, use that. IMHO, I like the idea of the Blackmaned wolf being where he got his name. Bill King goes back to that in the later novels, but really doesn't deal with it when Ragnar is an aspirant. I, personnally, have always liked that piece of fluff from the earlier codex, however, and I tend to emphasize that. So my model is a blonde with the Black wolf. I also like to blend the colors on the pelt to make them stand out more. So I would blend from black in the middle and on the head to shades of grey that are almost white by the time you reach the edge. When I painted mine, I used black and then blended through shades of brown. It looks nice, but I'm not sure it differs enough from my other pelts. The claws could then be a "brick red" or some other color that really stands out.

Either way, I'm sure your mini will look fantastic when completed. Great job.

Epic muttonchops man, epic facial hair. He looks more like a Space Walrus with them though. Yeah, those muttonchops are way too much, otherwise it's a nice mini there Jonny.

whats wrong with space walrus's??? you got a problem with walrus people???the chapter "respiteful walrus's" are going to TAKE YOU DOWN!!! along with radioactive lava sharks. cool model, wouldve been better if it were dante with the mutton chops...(of course not).

Oh wow that's awesome Jonny. There's only 2 things I would have done differently, first is the previously said mutton chops (about half the length they are now), and the 2nd is the sword to have some jagged "teeth" in it. Otherwise I'd be ecstatic to receive such a beautiful model. That's the thing about commissions, you order what you wanted, so I'm sure you're very happy with it, it's just brilliant. :P

Can't wait to see you paint that sucker. :D

Fellahs,

I just had this Ragnar model commissioned. I think it's sick.

Brother Jonny

Damm your eyes man that's fecking awesome, he's got the forward motion and most importantly looks like a single model (I've decided mine looks like a collection of parts in comparison). I love the little Celtic touches and patterns on his armour. I've got a long way to go with my sculpting.

Now I'm going to have to ebay my Ragnar and start again (sulkingly walks back to the drawing board).

You said it Jonny....CaptMac I wish I had the conversion skills that you got.

Jonny, I agree with the others the chops are a bit much especially since all the fluff and whatnot makes a big deal about how young he is for a Wolf Lord, also as Wolf said and if I'm not mistaken his sword is basically a bad mofo of a chainsword.

All,

took your advice, he is re-working the head - thinner nose, shorter sideburns and he's going to try to work fangs also.

On his sword,

in the novels, he's given a power sword when he was a wolf blade (and I can only assume that it's a frost blade), but there are no mention of teeth or it being a chainsword. And the rule book wargear has him with a Master Crafted Frost Blade.

I know the pictures & models from GW all have a chainsword, but I think I'm going with the clean blade look.

Yeah I have to agree, I know I stuck a chainsword on my RBM but after reading all the novels, where he always has the chainsword, at the end of Wolfblade I imagine it to be a clean blade like the one that Jonny's RBM has got that the gets from the navigators. I think my next attempt will have a clean blade.
