what help keep your consentration when painting/modeling

Recommended Posts

just wondering what my fellow painters/modelers do to help then consentrate

i have music playing all the time i think better about what i'm doing when not thinking of what i am doing if that makes sence if i consentrate on the music i am listerning to i seem to paint better (i know its strange right). just wondering what other people do

I have the TV going...usually Fresh Prince, or That 70's Show...and one stiff adult beverage...after another...

I also find it helpful to have a few different prjects going at once, so I can move between minis while waiting for a glaze or wash to dry...or if I get bored with whatever I'm working on.

Usually have the tv on in the backround when at home, as well as several other models to work on nearby if I think of some amazing idea I just have to do. At work when not busy the radio mixed with great lighting and keeping an eye on things works well.

I usualy paint speed style the night b4 a turnie that requires painted and flocked moddels(yes I understand its not a good idea but IDC)and I listen to alot of punk ranging from old stuff like ramones to new stuff like rancid and to keep steady hands I have a few glasses of Wild turkey(nothing like 101 to kill a shaky hand).
ohh btw incase you hadn't guessed I thrive on stimulation.

(pulls out bolt pistol) Heretic! Slaneeshi git! 'BLAMM!'

Right thats that :) (sorry Mal had to be done. Spur of the moment thing). I just have the radio on Kerrang non stop. And food. Nice food.

When I did it, it depended if there was something I wanted to listen to on the TV or whatever is on an online radio station

However, if I do get my job in a model shop, I am going to enquire with the owner (who is a mate) about the plausibility of me painting up mini's while there, as you see them do it in GW, but if not, then I will just do the mini's at home

headphones keep me focussed, and songs that can repeat over and over without annoying me, even better

why? because you lose track of time, which is key to painting/drawing high quality stuff :)

techno/trance works well but sometimes it makes me anxious so i have to slow it down

Alex

tv or music mostly

i like watching anime while converting because they usualy have some good ideas in them

as to music i like a mix of things

currently i have high and mighty colour playing(this one for any interested) but i also listen to stuff like apocalyptica, hawthorne heights, atreyu, trivium, soad, alien ant farm, bayside, lacuna coil, paramore, disturbed, killswitch engage, spineshank and a few others(mostly metal though)

i also have the hulk on dvd which i bought today for something to watch tonight while painting my spawns

Music I can... sing/mumble to mainly on quietly to dull down the annoyance of my Gf and Daughter!

LOTS of coffee (I tend to dip my brush in it a lot -_- only drank from the paint water once :D ! or 1... 2 cans of beer... cant get the brush in them tho!

I do the basic constructing in front the tv altho if somethign good is on ... im sometimes stuck to my marines!

Listen to music trance/rock/classical whatever happens to be what i feel like listening to at the time.

Podcasts. Apart from when walking the dogs its the only time i actually hear whats being said and take it in.

Films aswell on occasion will get put on or TV series. Again the type just depends but i've got the Invader Zim series to be going through shortly.

I like to listen to slow, quiet music with no sudden bursts of sound as when they happen it makes my hand jerk splashing paint all over the model, ruining it. I find the music helps to pass the time and as it is soft soothes you.

If I'm making models I generally do it in front of the TV, generally with a movie on that I've seen before so don't have to concentrate on the movie as much as the mini's. So that definitely rules out reader movies, trust me I've tried it. It doesn't work.

If I'm buildig/converting I watch a dvd. Not safe when reposing marines and watching Tommy Tiernan/Podge&Rodge dvds(reminding me I've seasons 1&2 of the latter's scare at bedtime to watch. Halloween's gonna be a right laugh lol.) If I'm painting then quieter/slower music helps me to concentrate on what I'm doing, as does my can of Bulmers if it's in the fridge(not as commonly as I'd like, being 16)

Music all the way. During a long day of painting, at least 10 records.

Usually punk/goth rock such as Rudimentary Peni, Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Before, PART1, Danse Society.

Apocalyptic anarcho punk works wonders. Gets you in the mood.

Oh yeah, apparently, there's a lot of crust punk that's based on the 40K universe. Anybody know of any bands?

I used to always only be able to paint with music going then I tried painting without it. It seems I have gotten better since not listening to music but that might also be because perhaps I have just started taking painting more seriously. In any case I can't hold my attention span as long without music but I feel like I concentrate more and get better results so I just now do shorter sessions.
