what help keep your consentration when painting/modeling

Recommended Posts

Well for me it's either the T.V. or music. With T.V. usually random shows, robot chicken, venture brothers. With music it's Sons of Butcher, Emperor, Windir, Darkthrone, Dying Fetus, Jerry Reid (Smokey and the Bandit).
Either Nightwish in the background... loudly.

Or the music from a game called Total Annihilation. If you've played it you'll know what I mean :P

This sounds very similar to a Guard player friend of mine i lived with for the last 2 years!

Recently i've been listening to Iron Maiden, got every album in release date order loaded onto a playlist - now that's a good night in! Other than that i'm listening to heavy stuff most of the time, metallica, dragonforce, AC/DC, Pantera etc. I find it distracts me enough so that i don't think about painting, i just paint. And i paint better when i'm not thinking about it so it works for me! And if not music, i'll sit and watch one of the star trek movies (today was Insurrection) or a whole series such as red dwarf or firefly. I find non 40k sci-fi the best source of ideas.

Al

ATM my modelling equipment and my bitz box is in my living room (my laptop + mouse + joystick fills my entire desk) so TV atm (X-files, ER, JAG, NCIS, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSY:NY, Cold Case, that sort of thing, with a Star Wars movie from time to time) When i sit in my own room i usually listen to music. (ranging from Kate Ryan to Eminem to Dragonforce to Nightwish to Disturbed to Star Wars and a few bits and pieces).

i keep the TV going ,maybe on sport or cartoons or something , and put my over 1 TB drum and bass collection on shuffle ,headphones if i need to be quiet

and so you don't have to keep getting up and changing tracks you maybe don't want to hear , i recommend these

the thing is i find painting and modeling in general clears my head so i don't really need anything to keep me concentrated

I like to paint somewhere I can either hear the tv or radio ar have a chat with my wife. If I am talking with her, it as almost like my hands are on autopilot and I get a good amount done in an evening.

If she is out, I prefer music to the tv, and typically play something I know all the words to, finding that I can sing along while painting (must be the autopilot thing again).

I find that I only listen to music, and have a very bright light in a position that if I get distracted suddenly and look up from my task at hand I can't see for a moment...

And if you are interested, and I will assume you are, I will post a list of my music...

Angels and Demons-Angra

One-Apocalyptica

Welcome Home-Coheed and Cambria

Dragonforce's Ultra Beatdown, Special Edition

Impulse-An Endless Sporadic

When The Lights Are Down, Center of the Universe, and Ghost Opera-Kamelot

Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin

Enter Sandman, and For Whome the Bell Tolls-Metallica

Gimme Shelter, Paint it Black, and Can't You Hear Me Knocking-The Rolling Stones

Mr. Roboto-Styx

Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill album

Boddhisattva and West of Hollywood-Steely Dan

Moonlight Sonata-Ludwig Van Beethoven

Take On Me-A-ha

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger-Daft Punk

And finally, World Eater by Bolt Thrower, a British death metal band that, in the 1990's, had a contract with GW for cover art, and their first album, Realm of Chaos's cover art was the original cover for Rogue Trader...

Awesome eh?

I feel quite sad now...I mainly listen to audio books. I'll listen to music for about an hour, I have a few hundred Gb of music so I just shuffle and have my toe on the skip button, but yeah mainly audio books. Just finished Stalingrad and now I've started Mort.
I just have ESPN in the back ground. Someone was nice enough to break into my car and jack my ipod so no music at the moment. But usually a range from As I lay dying, Nonpoint, snapcase, all the way up to some ACDC, led Zepplin so on and so on.
Children of Bodom, Tool, Lamb of God, Finntroll, Scrubs, caffeine, cider... The correct combination will addle my mind to the point where it can't move from where I put it - It stays painting because it's too legless/broken to run away
I push my keyboard away and paint at my computer, usually have msn up and firefox so I can get inspiration. MSN also kills the boredom that long painting sessions brings because I can easily check some forums to get focused again. Music wise I will usually click my first amon amarth song in the list, Bleed for Ancient Gods, and let itunes rumble through my 5 or so albums.
