Hybrid lists DP/Mech

Does a DP'd infantry synergize well enough with a Mech Heavy support?

I'm thinking about running a full heavy loadout of a Vindi/LRC(with BCs)/Whirlwind

And then drop podding everything else. I was thinking that 1st turn drops could be used to place GH's/Dreads where needed and perhaps provide LOS/Obscurement for the heavy support while they get into position.

I'd appreciate whatever experience with this type of list that anyone has to offer.

WHile I havent really done it myself... just starting on this solo pod stuff really, theres been a number of lists in the army list section. It gets in their face quick, and the mechanization allows you to move up and support them rapidly. All in all its a pretty good choice.

I usually play footslogger, with a a little mechanization for objective grabbing.

It's not a bad idea overall, the only thing I'd change with your tactic is getting your dreads to drop first (a ven. dread of course, and most likely an Ironclad and a 3rd dread of either Ironclad or regular) so that way you can scatter about the vindi without worry at all, and once you get closer and stop moving it's not that big of a problem (same with whirly).

I think a whirly wouldn't do as well as another vindi in this list... it'll be likely on its lonesome in the back (unless you use a squad to take an objective near) and with usually hiding behind terrain it's going to be scattering all over, sometimes 12" which is your GH's favorite spot... With a good mix you should have everything moving almost all the time, and you just won't be doing that with a whirly.

Also remember about the whirly that it'll be the only low AV on the table, especially if you loose the first turn they'll be a LRC, vindi, and whirly... not hard to pop the whirly asap then worry about the others that have shorter shooting range.

Now about the rest of your list, the BC's in the LRC is good, I like them better in here than in the drop pod... this way they don't usually get shot at before they charge, and they're likely to distract while in the LRC and take a lot of shots, and against AV 14, not much will happen to them... The only troops in your pods (which I think you were going to do anyways) should be your grey hunters.

In a smaller list, don't worry about terminators just yet, actually even at larger lists, if you go dread heavy you might not have an elite slot to take WGBG in TDA... at 2250+ I usually can mix terminators in the same list as land raiders without a problem... any less I usually prefer to only use one or the other.

I actually started doing this in my 1500pt list (mainly to try something new instead of doing my usual All Mech)

So far it's proved fairly effective. I still have a lot of learning to do with it b/c the tactics are different than an all Mech Army. Basically I have a shooty Ven Dread, LRC w/ Lord and BCS, and a Whirly start out and then I drop in two Pods of GHs to take OBJs and mop things up. Works well and I can't wait to try it out in 1750 and 2k matches.

My issue now is whether or not to drop the Ven Dread. Personally I like having him in the back field as a long range fire support beast. He covers my Whirly well. But I see the benefits of dropping him. I do have an Ironclad in a Pod in one of my 2k lists which I'm psyched to use.

Did this with my Ard Boys Test list. -Couldn't make the tourny but played a few games with people that did well, against their lists. I never lost. in fact, I dominated. Even against a tough as nails nyd list. I had 1 pod with GH, WGBL, and WGPL in it. Completely decked out. Ran some scouts, Vendread, Wolf Priest with Bloodclaws in a crusader, Runpriest with Bodyguard in a LR, Grey Hunters in a Razorback, A vindi and a Whirlwind. - Only had 3 scoring in 2500 pts, but I tore people apart so bad that it was all I needed.

With the new Marine Codex out, I would've added an Ironclad, and possible dropped the Bodyguard in a pod instead of a second LR, giving you three pods.

I really like the mix list. I think the only potential problem is having a lone pod out there if you face a grouped army. I didn't have this problem because it was before the new Drop pod Rules. But, having three pods lets you drop two in on a flank, holding another in reserve, while the rest of you army can move on them quickly. So to sum up, I think mix lists will be very good, at higher points. About 1750 and Higher I would say they could do some real damage. Too far below that I'm unsure. would have to playtest.

I actually put tog a 'Ard Boyz list as well w/ dp/mech hybrid, 3 pods total, 2 w/ GH squads and 1 w/ WGBL/WGBG w/ 3 AC's. Rest of the list was rather standard mech list: 2x vindi, ww, some bikers,gh's in rhino , vendread. Ended up wiping out the tau player I played against in turn 4, so I would say it worked rather well! The AC drop pod of doom is just NASTY I will say that. Ended up wiping out a significant portion of his forces every turn.

You should have played ard boyz missions then if you were comparing to their lists, because having only 3 scoring units would fetch you a draw at best in 2 out of the 3 missions being played... however it's nice to know you had success with the pie plates of doom out and about, always fun.

But seriously, at 2500, you should have 4+ scoring units for sure, no reason not to... nothing says F-U like 6 grey hunters drop podding in, 4 with WGBL's with assault cannons, and 2 with WGPL's with combi's... did I mention dreads everywhere?
