Galactic geography near Fenris

Hi Guys,

As whenever you (maybe just me?) start a new army/start painting again I've decided to do my space wolves as best as I can, with as much flavour as I can. I have decided I do not really like the baby blue/dark blue/shadow grey of the current design of space wolves and noticed that there is a pre-heresy grey colour. So this is my new colour scheme.

Anyways, since I've decided I'd like to add some character to my wolves I have a couple questions.

1. The first and most basic question is that I've noticed a couple of conversions where there are round shields on some of your conversions. This offers a much more norse feel. I was going to convert one myself using some scratch materials but was curious as to whether some came from fantasy and if so where?

2. This is more to do with the title of the post: I'd like to start by adding trophies to my warriors. I noticed in the Ultramarines forum that they have a galactic map of their empire and the nearby enemies. I was wondering if anything else like this exists for the space wolves and who their traditional enemies are.

Any info on this would be great, thanks!

For the shields, just go to the GW site and type shield in the find function, some nice orc shields should pop up

For our enemy, we fight everything realy, but we are close to the eye of terror so most fights would involve Chaos, but in the end orks and necrons are everywhere, so they should be at the receiving end of our charge a lot to, Nids end tau are on the other side of the galaxy so not a lot of fighting against them.

All i can give you (if not already know) is this Starmap. Armageddon is not far away. The Gothic Sector and the Eye of Terror are also our playground.

For conversions i can tell you that the WHF Mortal Chaos range has some nice parts. The chaos warrior capes are nice, some of their hand weapons, too. The new chaos marauder box will give us some really nice and wolfy heads.

The new Codex: SM has a different starmap. I dislike it and prefer the one DB just posted.

Sad thing is it's GW and they can do what they want, and they justify it by "the universe is ever changing"... just to me that seems WAY too fast... but then again this is Sci-Fi...

For storm shields I've always GS'd mine, usually a circle-like feel to it and wooden engraving if I feel like it...

Easy as pie traditional enemies - Thousand sons, Dark Angels. The two that i use anyway.

But Chaos in general works of course.

There is a great article around with the history of the wolves which may inspire you, but i can't seem to find it... has anyone got the link handy?

Fang

Whoa, that starmap is freakin sweet! It's big, it's bad, it's my new desktop background!

Thanks Dark Bjoern!

I must admit though, being so big it actually took me a few minutes to find Fenris in there, I didn't realise we were so, I guess isolated- there are almost no other star systems in immediate proximity that I can see. The galaxy is a swirl formation with areas of highly concentrated dots signifying (sp?) star systems, and we are all alone in the dark.

The SW codex cover art has us cutting down orcs but I don't always trust the graphic illustrations on books/codeci since they are usually there to grab attention and sell the book rather than being a true illustration as to who we fight.

I think I may go with orcs though, since my brother used to collect them and may have a few easy bits and pieces lying around. The wolves operating as a support/rescue company during the third war for armageddon actually really works for me. :D

@Long Fang and Grey Mage: Thanks for that article, it's a great read! :HS: I thought there may have been something like this lying around but couldn't seem to find the right searchy.

Thanks guys, this really helps! Onward, for Russ! For the Wolf time!

Well I would say go with a bit of everything just tone it to what you think would me more likely....more models having Chaos trophies than would have Ork trophies (think 5 of ten would have something from killed 1KSons (or other Chaos filth), 3 would have Orks stuff and maybe 1 would have a Tau helmet and another 1 would have a Nid claw)

A few of the guys I know are absolutely crazy... they play for bitz and peicez.... meaning that at the begging of the game each player chooses a bit on their HQ, and if they lose they have to allow their opponent to break it off and put it in their trophy case. One of these three gents has replaced the head of his hive tyrand five times in the last two years. Thankfully they dont do it all the time...

I cant imagine being willing to do that, and their stuff is much better painted then mine.

i kinda do something like that. whenever my wulfen lord on a bike destroys a squad i ask for an unpainted head and the paint scheme. i then paint (duh) drill a hole in the bottom and stick a paper clip into it and glue it to his bike base. at the moment i have dark angles, crimson fists, genestealer, gaunt, diy marines, black legion, khorne beserkers, and eldar.

This map shows only those systems that had been mentioned somewhere in GW´s fluff. There´re other systems around Fenris. Yust read the last two SW novel. There´re some planets mentioned that belongs to the SW protectorate. We don´t have a realm like Ultramar but we protect our part of the galaxy. To give you some names: Hyades, Charys, Gere. That´s all planets in systems around Fenris.

For who we fight most i think chaos is the answer. But at the end you can choose nearly every race with the exception of the Tau. The Tau thing is more a local thing cause it´s on the other end of the galaxy.

I'm thinking that doing a few different enemy trophies might be a good idea muzzyman. Starting with the blood claws perhaps just the odd ork head here and there, then the grey hunters kitted out with some pelts/cloaks and some chaos bits and pieces along with some prize weapons to represent "combat knives"- things like chaos chainaxes etc from previous campaigns they've lived through. My Rhinos and dreads i may attach full "corpses" to the sides or front as sort of a warning/example to others.

Actually, what sort of sacrificial traditions did the vikings have? Things like stringing people up after being captured as an example to the enemy etc etc. Most cultures in the dark ages (and sadly enough even now) tend to make examples of people in the most brutal fashion. Making one up for this sort of thing would be interesting.

I've noticed a few of you have recommended chaos marauder heads (in different threads) which I've taken a look at and look interesting. The other thing I can think of was (I think they were) chaos marines of some sort that had cloaks that came up over their shoulders and looked quite cool as a Space Wolf pelt conversion. I just can't think of what they were, can anyone help me out there?

Cheers,

Karsekov.

You know what a christmas tree is? Its an incredibly watered down pagan tradition from the norselands. As a gift to the gods they would sacrifice livestock, items, people, and string them up on large oak trees- much like odin himself was placed.

Ritual animal sacrifice wasnt part of daily life or anything, but it wasnt unheard of either.

Loot was loot.... sacrifices were seperate. You had to put some effort into them.

Nidstang, a form of ceremonially cursing a place involves sacrificing a horse, and placing its head upon a runecovered staff.

As for the pelts... cant help you many... only good one Ive seen comes from the Khorne Lord pack.
