Paints/SW heads

Ok as im getting back into the hobby I am now unsure of what paints/inks and now foundation paints? to use. I want to go for a more grey look on my space wolves but I really don't know what paints I should be using, trips to the store are few and far between atm so most of stuff is ordered online. So I don't want to go wrong. In any case I thought maybe a stickied topic at the top with useful paints & colours for Space Wolves might not be a bad idea?

I also don't want to use the same 4-5 heads on all of my models and was wondering if any other substitutes are any good?

I have tried searching but it doesn't seem to work all the time and I sifted through the painting/converting forum and came up with chaos beastmen heads as a possibility and vajello(sp?) paints? Are they any better than the gw ones?

(sorry if this is the wrong forum but I thought it would get better responses in the SW forum)

Well if you are looking for more of a grey color than the best idea would be Codex Grey or the like and mix in a little Fenris or Space Wolf Grey or not. I had the same idea that I wanted a more grey color than blue but outside of mixing paints couldn't find anything.

As for the heads, there is a topic a little further down on good alternative heads that can be used or that are coming out soon.

what colours would you recommend for grey SW theme

I use vallejo's color line, neutral and light grey are my basis for the grey SW theme. I can elaborate more in a PM if you wish, but basically I use water mixes to change tones the way I want and that's about it... the shoulders I prefer a white color, red, or yellow.

So uh, that micro art studio? it's going to have my babies. I've been wanting some crazy off the wall technological looking models for servitors/thralls or just as fluffy looking iron type marines, and they have the most awesome ones. thank you!

For me, I use a wash/drybrush coloring for all of my models, then paint details with quality paint. My process looks like this:

- Krylon Grey Primer (base coat)

- Wash of Graphite (cheap $1 paint from wal-mart)

- Drybrush of a Light Grey (another $1)

- Lighter Drybrush of a Lighter Grey (another $1)

- Details as necessary with quality paint.

For big paint jobs like on tanks or simple stuff like a wash/drybrush, cheap paints have worked well for me. When you want good color for the details (shoulder pads, packs, etc) I use higher quality paint. For black, GW works fine for me. I also use the GW metallics, have not yet tried any other line (except the cheap $1 metallics, which suck).

I am not an artist. I paint my minis only because I have to so I dont get docked for points. If they made pre-painted 40k figures, I would buy them (part of why I have a nice sized AT-43 army which I have never played - pre-painted figs). But, since I have to paint them, I want it to look as good as I am capable. The guys who are artists in my store all recommend Vallejo paints, and I have found them to be high quality. Cheaper too (or the same cost as GW).
