Vulcanus
In 4th, I had an army that rocked HARD. It wasn't very common, but I know some people on this site made good use of it. With Rhinos being more expensive and less reliable than they are now, SM/CSM needed an alternative way to get to grips with their foes; Infiltration was the solution. The army was basically massed CSM squads with plasma/melta & PFs, supported by Raptors and Havocs. It had several advantages even BEFORE the game started; 1. It deployed last (even the HS chioces) 2. It had no armour whatsoever making the enemy's AT obsolete 3. It contained more MEQs than most armies could handle (usually 50+ in 1500p games) But then GW scr*wed us over with the new dex and we were left with the Chosen entry; YIHAA! B) The special rules for AL were basically: - No deamons what so ever (i.e. no DP) - No cult units - No marks of chaos - All units can take infiltrate for 1p/guy. IC for 5p. Now, my questions are, 1. Would you play an army that used these rules? 2. Do you believe that a viable build could be made using them? chillin
Sure, if I were using my 3.5 codex BL army. If I were using the new dex I would want my opponent using it too. Besides, it really doesn't matter what anyone on here sz, only the people in your gaming group or LGS, who you will actually be playing. Massawyrm
1) No. 2) OMG yes. Infiltrate is far too cool now to be given to everything in the CSM codex, and WAY too good for just 1pt. Vulcanus
Infiltrate is far too cool now to be given to everything in the CSM codex, and WAY too good for just 1pt. Are you referring to "Outflank"? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/150242-alpha-legion/#findComment-1746171 Share on other sites
Massawyrm
Are you referring to "Outflank"? And the fact that 2/3s of all games involve securing objectives, yes. Massawyrm
My recommendation would be to pony up the $30 for the new Space Marine Codex (a great read regardless of army affiliation) and run your Alpha Marines as a Codex Space Marine chapter led by Kor'Sarro Khan. Simply change Khan's name to Captain Sorge. Then make all the obvious substitutions. You don't even need to remove all the heavy choices from your list. But you won't be able to run anything like Oblits, Defilers or any of the marked CSM troop types - nor will your chaos marines have both bolters AND CCWs. You will however have an army with Outflank. You can run "Infiltrating Alpha Legion" as scouts - slightly less armored frontline alpha legion. And Khan (Sorge) gives the unit he is in Hit and Run and Furious Charge, which fits with his tactics and fluff as someone who chooses his fights carefully and only fights on his own terms. If you want to be really fluffy and have a fairly understanding partner, pony up the extra 20pts for Jump Pack instead of the bike. If they're REALLY understanding, swap the ability to have Bike squads as troops to have Assault Squads (but not Vanguards) as troop choices. That's a switch I'd definitely allow that keeps the balance but serves the fluff. The Alpha Legion, FLUFFWISE, spend a lot of time in disguise pretending to be Space Marines. So why not use that to your advantage. This is the PERFECT place to make a counts as army.
