alternate summoned lesser daemon models?

So I've decided that I want to use a few lesser daemon squads, but I really do not like the models available (all 4 variations). With that in mind, here are a few questions...

1) Is it legal to use other models for these figures?

2) Have any of you used OTHER models besides those listed on the GW website?

3) Do you think Hormagaunts would work well as alternative models (with a bit of moding)?

thoughts?

Yes, zombies! Though I'm no nurgle player (I don't like my belly bloated and flies coming from every orifice) I am a sucker for zombies. Consequently, I use 40k-ified zombies as Daemons. Zombies have many sources in 40k, not just the Zombie Plague, so I think they're perfectly viable.

just my 2 frags

Lizardmen :D

I looked at these models and agree that they would work very well. To get them on round bases should I pick up slotted round bases, or non-slotted?

The models go with slots, if that's what you mean. But you could always remove the spare splastic and glue or pin it to a normal base :)

Using Vampire Count ghouls from WFB, fI created my own lesser daemons known to the Imperium as Fyre-Ghouls (I haven't finished them unfortunately, but where they have hair, it's going to look like flame), they're of an unknown power, though believed to be Tzeentchian in the background I've written for them (I will of course not confirm this, or deny this in any way or form to keep peole who read it in due course, guessing :D :D :))
I use FB Flagellants with Guard bits as counts-as-Summoned-Lesser-Daemons cultists for my Word Bearers to kick around. Fluffwise, they just crawl out of hiding instead of being summoned (to simulate their old infiltrate rules), and their invulns are the protection of the Dark Gods as a reward for their faith... or something.

Personally I like alot of the GW Daemon models - I am using the new Bloodletters as mine. However you could check out 'Heresy Miniatures', they have some cool stuff (and are an awesome company who deserve all the support they get), and there are other comapnies out there putting out some dialled kits so you could always hit them up (unfortunately I have passed over alot of these without ever recording who did what - sorry).

It is legal to use these to represent SLDs when gaming friendlies but if you plan on playing @ or in a GW run event then you'll need Citidel minis ('cause GW run their stores like Hitler ran Germany...Not that I am in any way bitter towards them )

Hope this helps.

I use WHFB bats. I put one bigger and one smaller on a 25mm round base, so each "generic daemon" basically is a small swarm. The bigger ones with their height and wingspan have about humanoid dimensions, but I am generous with LOS. I cut off the ears to have them look less like bats and more like small winged demon critters.

When 10 of these are summoned, that's 20 daemon bats dropping in front of the enemy, and hopefully a disheartening sight. One blister pack of bats should give you enough bats to make 5 such daemons.

I'm using beastmen from Fantasy as lesser demons.

Yeah me too, the ungors look like classic daemons from mythology. Especially when painted red and black.

One idea I have rattling around in my head which I plan to use eventually is to:

a. Use tomb kings skellies with swords as my "tzeentchian" lesser daemons for C:CSM

b. Use the same models with command groups as counts as plague bearers for a Tzeentch daemons army when not using 1k sons.

Just to make the point, you might use blobs of blue tack or empty paint jars and when questioned as to why you don't have "proper" miniatures you might reply:

"Well, they don't have proper rules, why should I bother making proper minis?"

Yeah those are mine.

I was planning a daemon army to get into 40K. But when I finally got the book it wasn't quite what I had hoped for. By then I had read some more 40k books, and the idea of a stand-alone daemon army had kinda soured on me. So these plaguebearers got shelfed.
