The Swords of Dorn

Recommended Posts

So I was assembling some BT's and I've noticed I have alot of " free marines " from Tac squad / BT upgrade sprue leftovers. I also scored a few sword icon shoulderpads from somewhere. Anyway,. like building my Crusade isn't enough I've decided to try a DIY chapter too. I'm not going to be dumping alot of time into them until I get my Crusade where I want it. Essentially, I'll be piecing them together from spare parts & leftovers.

Being a BT nutter, and knowing we come from Rogal Dorn, thereby being brothers with the Imperial Fists, and Crimson Fists I tried to shoot for a color scheme that pays homage to all 3 chapters [ the BT's, the IF's & the CF's ]. Lastly I love the golden color of the Adeptes Custodes, so I thought I'd substitue that for yellow..

Here's a concept created w/ the SM painter.

I welcome any and all C&C. I would really like to know what you guys think of the colors..

I'll have some WIP's of the concept minis shortly.

Also I'm leaning on using Dark Angel iconography as the chapter badge since Dorn broke his sword when he felt he failed in his mission.. Seems like an easy enough fit for these guys, and it'll give me something to do with all the leftover pads I have from the DA upgrade spures.

Thx,

yah very good beginnings so far ~smiles~. i am really liking the colour scheme and am wondering what it would look like on a mini. hey i just had a thought over the next couple of days im gonna paint one of my spare "currently between assignments" Marines in your scheme. one just to have an excuse to paint something a little different. two to improve my meagre painting skills further and three is because i really really like your colour scheme. all you need now is some quality fluff to give them a little history/backstory and you sir! ~grins~ are going to have a great crusade force. i wish you luck.

peace

Thx Kanan..

I'm glad you like the color scheme. I've got 2 minis built and ready for paint.. I'll get them up in a few days [ I work the @ Fire Dept. tomorrow so no painting for me ]

I REALLY wanted to work a Custodes force, but they're rather trendy at the moment, so I opted for this instead. It's the next best thing.. Custodes color without all the bits ordering mess. LOL. I love the golden armor look, and I thought connecting all 3 " Brother " chapters to the SoD's by color scheme was a fair enough excuse..

On a side note...It's sad that I'm going to this extreme JUST to be able to use that nice looking Terminator Librarian mini [ As BT's don't have Libbys ] ..so sad..

I like the scheme as well. I think yellow (perhaps a goldenrod shade instead of IF yellow) will work better than gold but you're the one who has to happy with them not me. Looking forward to seeing the testfigs.

BTW do you have a sister Polly?

I'll be going for a rich, warm gold tone [ Burnished Gold w/ Fleshwash to darken it w/ Mithril Silver + Burnished Gold highlights ]. I think it will work well. I'm on shift at the Fire Dept. today so I can't do much. I'm off the next 2 days so look for pics of test minis by Friday [ hopefully ]

As I stated in my first post, these guys are going to be pieced together from the " free marines " or leftover figs whilst I'm finishing my Black Templars, so they won't get too much attention. I'll probably paint 5-6 here and there just as a break from all that black We'll see.. maybe the test minis will come out so well I decide to re-do all my Templars to this scheme..

Either way I'm stoked.

And no Polly isn't my sister, she's a 4th cousin twice removed on my mother's step-brother's side.. I think.

Bro H

You could try flipping the Dark Angel's Icon upside down. You get a sword and a Sunburst that way.

Not a bad idea. What'll probably do in all honesty is grab the ole X-acto and shave off the DA wings just leaving the sword. I'm not 100% sure yet.

I'm heading over to a buddy's [ or mate's for you across the ponders ] house today [ who is a former GW sales rep, and has been in the hobby for 15 years ] to have a go at his bits box [ a bits room actually.. kinda like Bobpanda, only Scottish.. LMAO ] . He's given me carte' blanche for whatever I want in there, and tossing in 10 Termi's & a buttload of other minis for the cause.

Free, new, minis so rock...well not free.. cost me several bottles of Glen Livet, a vintage Harlequin army in trade, and a decade and a half of friendship.

Quick Update:

I've got the test mins put together and primed. Sorry no pics yet as my wife had the digital camera in her purse & she's at work.

I've got to run to my LGS today for some more burnished gold, hopefully I'll be posting up some pics today, as this is a WIP forum.

Here's the breakdown of the squad thusfar;

1 Sgt. w/ Powerfist and Bolt Pistol

1 Metalgunner

4 Marines w/ Chainsword and Bolt Pistol

Also, taking stock of the leftover bits, I should be able to gather enough minis for near a full tac squad after the completion of each of my Templar Crusader squads. If this holds true that's a nice bonus for having to spend $65.00 per Crusader squad. I'm quite fond of getting close to 2 10 man squads out of my near 70 dollars.

Furthermore, I'm still working up a history/fluff for these guys. Since in all actuallity the new Codex:SM states that only the BT's & CF's are listed as IF descendant chapters, I'm sort of at an impass. I'll more that likely run them under IF rules, so I can make use of the full compliment of models available and the new SM toys. Any thoughts brothers?

Lastly, I went back in to the SM painter and redid the color scheme somewhat [ picture below ]. I changed the chestplate color a bit. What I'm wondering is should I reserve this new scheme for the squad sergeants, or should I do the whole lot like this?

Thanks in advance for the C&C brothers.

Ummm, no. The top scheme was pretty good, yellow was a little pale for my tastes but hey. I recommend brightening the eye colour. As for the sergeant scheme, I don't like the change. Perhaps instead of changing the chest, change the arms instead - from yellow to red, with black hands.

Just a thought.

Well that was a total disaster....the scheme looks like trash on my mini. It doesn't even warrant a pic of the test mini. Thank God for Simple Green, or brake fluid.

The gold took 4 coats to get a smooth finish.

The red was too muted, even after 3 coats.

The only thing worth it's salt was the black, and you can't really go wrong with that.

This whole exercise was alot like Communism.. It looked great in theory, but was garbage in application.

Kanan feel free to swipe the scheme if you want it. I'll stick to Red, Black, White & Cream [ My Black Templars ].

Consider this thread closed..

~The Emperor Guides........ [ just not my paintbrush ].

don't give up so fast!

use foundation paints to build up the yellow quickly ( i reccommend iyanden darksun, then golden yellow)

gold is easy! do a beastial brown basecoat, then shining gold, and then (if you want to) a wash of flesh wash. easy and smooth!

black is something you should know how to paint...

and red, well use blood red or red gore.

keep at it! things get better

I DO you foundation paints actually & I still bombed it.. I honestly think the problem was that even though I have an idea with the SM painter, I was still flying blind, in a way.

Thx for the encouragement, but I take this as a sign from Him on Terra, that I should not stray from the Templar path. LOL
