All Assault Marines = Raptors

Is it possible to have normal Assault Marines as opposed to Raptors, specifically for the Legions?

Its easier to justify for a Renegade Chapter but I know that jump packs were rare back in the day, but they still existed.

I guess my point is that not everyone with a jump pack went to the Raptor cult did they?

Nine Legions each with numbers into the dozens of thousands, yeah, I would say it is safe to say that not every single git with a jump pack became a Raptor. However, there aren't any jump pack/infantry entries in the Chaos codex other than Raptors and an option for Lords.

Was that what you were asking?

Haha, yeah in alot of ways, thats what I'm asking.

Reason being is I'd like to use Assault Marines for my Word Bearers (same rules as Raptors) but just be able to justify them (mostly to myself) that they're jump infantry Legionnaries and not some merc unit.

I think the main problem is the dinstinctive look of the Raptor models, but that could be remedied by using the excellent pre-Heresy jump pack tutorial that is somewhere around the B & C, or you could use loyalist packs and Chaos 'em up with spikey bitz and the like. If they're painted up as Word Bearers and you say they're Word Bearers then they're Word Bearers. If you need to get fluffy just say the dark apostle or whoever leads your force was granted a vision by the Chaos gods way back when and he told 5-20 (I think that's the squad size of a Raptor squad in the Codex) of his assault boys to hang on to their jump packs when they headed into the Eye and to avoid wandering off into the skies of Daemon worlds.
The Raptors don't have any special rules themselves, so it's easily justified by a model swap. Now, if they still had their Hit&Run and Scream then I'd say no, but as it is they have the same basic rules as assault marines anyways...
