[ARTWORK] Adeptus Astartes

This is my first profile drawing of an Adeptus Astartes. I have drawn the good ol' Space Marines before, but never close up or in particular detail. So, for your consideration...

I have a feeling the proportions might be a bit off, and I'm not sure about the relevance of the numbers, if theyre chapter or squad markings, which is why I left out any features unique to any of the chapters (Dark Angles winged blades etc). And I know he is leaning slightly, I must have been sitting odd :P

Comments and criticism welcome :wallbash:

that's a pretty good sketch you got there. looks like he could either be a scout or a marine wearing an old pattern of armour. i look forward to seeing more.

btw numbers are generally squad numbers, codex chapters indicate their company with different colours on the banding of the shoulder guards, some non-codex chapters differ from this, notably the dark angels and space wolves.

Something interesting, on the paper version the numerals say XI, my scanner must have flipped it when i was rotating it (read: i flipped it when rotating it >_>)

Also, what makes you say his armour looks like an older mk, or that hes a scout, just for ruture reference :)

Thanks for your input,

I got bored and did a quick drawing of the marines charging into a battle :)

C&C welcome

The boots make him odd.

Marine boot never get skinnier towards the ankles, always wider.

The couter (elbow plates) should overlap both the vambrace (lower arm armor) and the rerebrace (upper arm armor).

The greaves should likewise overlap the anklejoints

The soft armor should only be seen on the inside of the joints.

Other than that the shoulder pads need to look equally bulky, and more bulky while you're at it. Right now it looks like really ornate inner pads or Scout pads.

Lastly, his belt is 2D rather than a thick armored ring and his lower breastplate is extra tall and wasp-waisted which is just totally odd given the extreme bulk of a Marine. The lower breastplate should get only very very very slightly narrower as a whole by the time it meets the belt or possibly not at all, and the upper breast plate should take up more of the space occupied by the lower part.

All of these things in your drawing contribute to a Scout-like appearance. All that being said tho, you got all the general parts of the armor right and all the inaccuracies actually fit together quite nicely. The numbers mean various things depending on how they are used. It could be his Squad number, Company number, or even Chapter number if he were a Blood Angel or Marine from one of the lost Legions (Blood Angels are Legion/Chapter IX, and one of the lost Legions is XI).

Notice the widening towards the bottom of the greaves, the mass of the shoulders, how little space the lower breastplate takes up, and how almost all of the soft armor is covered by overlapping plates.

Sometimes I think I'm a little TOO familiar with Power Armor.... :)

I like your second picture! Except the dynamic guy, his chest doesn't look built enough. You've probably seen a swimmer, who has broad shoulders...and these Space Marines have MASSIVE muscles..so they probably have massive upper bodies..that guys looks kinda like a tube..the other guys look good though.
Also, what makes you say his armour looks like an older mk, or that hes a scout, just for ruture reference?

The reason i said he looks like a scout was pretty much summed up in "the emperor's" post above, he isn't quite bulky enough to be wearing 'modern' (mk vi-vii) power armour and his torso armour looks uncannily like the thinner carapace armour worn by scouts.

take a look at them side by side and you'll see what i mean.

despite this, it's a great sketch, keep up the good work.
