kikkala
Howdy. This one's kinda big tutorial, so crab some snacks and drinks and starts shuffling through ;). Ok, let's start with tools what I used: -crafting knife -super glue -cord (taken from old headphones) -iron rod -guitar strings -green stuff Modelling 1. Prepare the model, remove any mold lines or flash. Leg bionic #1 1. Take two spots and drill holes in them. I took two places for demonstration. 2. Carve the area between these two drilled holes with crafting knife. 3. Cut a piece of wire that fits to the carved spot and glue it on. Leg bionic #2 1. Cut off the thigh. 2. Measure using the cut off thigh for the bionic parts. It's up to you what / or how many pieces of rod (etc.) you use, for demonstration I used 1 thicker cord and 2 thinner rods. Glue them on. 3. If you measured wrong (like I did), use GS to cover it up. After GS dries up, smooth it to boxy shape. Arm bionic #1 1. Take an arm. 2. Make 2 deep cuts. Depth of the cut should be around third of the arms width. To clear things up, the 2 blue lines show where to cut. 3. Carve the area between the two cuts off. 4. Glue some rod on the carved spot. Arm bionic #2 1. Take an arm. 2. Cut off the area between red lines off. 3. Measure the length of the bionic parts with cut-off arm part. Again you can use what rods and wires you have, in my case I took 1 thicker cord and 1 thinner rod and glued them on. kikkala
Painting Preparing the model with black primer. Metallics 1. Metallics areas are basecoated with Tin Bitz. 2. Drybrush with Dwarf Bronze 3. Light drybrush with Chainmail. Black Repaint all black areas after you've finished with metallics. Extreme highlighting-style 1. Highlight all edges with German Grey (VMC). 2. Highlight with watered down Codex Grey, leaving some of the previos grey showing. 3. Babad Wash whole model. Mock-up "painterly" highlightin-style 1. Paint the upper edges with German Grey. Around 1/3 of the area is good. 2. Mix German Grey and Codex Grey 50/50, and highlight. (Here comes a mistake from me, while painting this layers, I started to paint final stage, without taking a picture. So left side of the mini shows current stage and right side is finised. I apogolize.) 3. Final highlight with watered down Codex Grey. 4. Babad Wash the damn thing :D. Blue 1. Basecoat all blue areas with Ice Blue. 2. Mix Ice Blue and White 50/50 and highlight, remember to leave some of previous layer showing. 3. Final highlight Ice Blue and White 30/70. Grey 1. Basecoat all grey area with Codex Grey. 2. Mix Codex Grey and White 50/50 and paint. 3. Pure white on the top. (I forgot to paint the purity seal :P) Symbol and clan marking All markings are painted like this. Basecoat with Ice Blue and apply slightly watered down white over it. Iron Hand symbol 1. Paint a "8". 2. The "8" roughly gives you core for the hand. 3. Paint the lower part of fingers like this. 4. Paint 4 straight lines to make fingers. 5. Paint the thumb with 2 straigt lines. Clan Marking 1. Paint a cross, size of the cross helps you to size the circle. 2-3. With circling motion fill the circle. 4. Paint little squares on the sides of the circle to form a cog. 5. Paint clan marking (not showed) I hope you like it ;). Barret
Glue the legs to the base and then remove the thigh?! Madness! Such an efficient process must be heresy. But what happens if you want to replace both thighs...? kikkala
Thanks for the comments! Glue the legs to the base and then remove the thigh?! Madness! Such an efficient process must be heresy. :) Not funny! I'm very slow thinker you know  . But what happens if you want to replace both thighs...? I would do one leg first like in the tutorial, and after it's done, the other . But there's the fear that you'll accidently break the bionic leg. Here's solution for this: before lopping off any legs, I would almost cut of the other leg. After finishing with 1st bionic leg, you can remove the other leg with eaze. Barret
Genius. --edit-- I took a shot at doing the first type, with the wire embedded into the leg armour. Nice and simple, and it looks good. I hadn't thought of using the drill to make the slot for the wire. I'll dress them up with a bit of GS and post some pics. Skoby
They're guitar strings, if you know anyone who plays guitar they might have some old strings you could use, or you could buy some from a music shop fairly cheap (although the 3 highest strings wont be much use for this). I somehow missed this topic, it makes me want to strip all my models and start Iron Hands, despite my love of chaplains and dislike of techmarines lol.
