Viva Metallica

I'm working on one atm. It's looking like the head piece will take a few more coats in order to apply it cleanly... the blue for the rest of the body looks great so far. Now I just need to find a new color for the eyes

How bout green?

Have you seen wappelious'(did i spell that right?) Thousand Sons? check out the eyes on those ^_^

I tried this with Chainmail and Dark Green Ink last night, and it turned out really well. I don't have a camera, so I cant take pics, not to mention it's on a dirty robo-xenos, but it came out really well.

Didn't water it down, only two coats because it's really, really dark anyway. Gives it a lustre which I think is due to the ink drying thinner that paint, and thus smoother, along with a metallic base. It just makes it really, really shiny and awesome. Of course, I'm pretty sure Dark Green Ink is OOP now, but you could probably find something else to emulate it.

EDIT: I think the colour it came out was roughly as dark as Dark Angels Green, maybe a bit brighter, and a lot shinier.

Thanks guys.

@ Johnny, I will start my dread soon, I promise :)

@ OwenCrute, There is the wash Thrakka Green, which i used on my test Salamander Earlier in this topic. It turned out quite well, maybe you should give that a try ;)

Almost nearly finished the first tactical squad, just waiting for the eye lens varnish to dry, then I will be basing them.

I'll get some pics up soon :P

THANKS EVERYBODY!!!

I'm still waiting to find a better camera and some better lighting but here is the first pic of my finished 1k son done in a metallic scheme.

The head piece has not turned out as metallic as I had hoped when it comes to the yellow (I don't think I watered it down enough) but the blue with the the uneven, almost swirling look that comes to the armor when you are as shoddy a painter as I am looks exceptional :)

Also, I happened across a really cool way to decorate and even put elaborate patterns into the metallic look. Basically, as I was painting the 1k sons tabard white, I painted a white stripe on it's right leg that I had already painted blue. Well in my attempt to remove the mark (IE, putting layer after layer of blue wash on that spot to remove it because I'm too lazy to repaint the entire leg) I realized that I could not change its visibility.

However, it treats it as a permanent shine into the armor that is only visible when looking at it at close range. In other words, it could be used to add a few static locations of mimicked shine like you would on a more basic paint job or to create intricate patterns within the armor while still giving it a metallic look.

I think that when I paint my Asp Sorc, I will try this on the sword to see if I can't produce an effect that is similar to the blue drybrushed, white highlighted silver sword look that has been extremely popular on many sorc weapons

I saw the Salamander, it's much, much lighter than the result I got.

Why not add in some Badab black?

But then again if you are happy with using Dark Angels Green then, go for it

It might just be me but as what get from OwenCrute is that his ended up darker than yours. So why should he add badab black?

If he tried it with Thrakka green, then add black. :cuss sorry, my bad wording.

EDIT: Went out and bought a box of assault termies and now have to decide on thunder hammers or lightning claws. :D

Leaning towards thunder hammers.

I'd try adding badab black but 1) It's all my brother's paints and I don't think he's bothered getting Badab Black ( Or Thrakka Green, for that matter) yet, he's still using Black Ink, and 2) I have a sneaking suspicion that adding black will turn it a muddy swampy green colour that would look at place on nurgle models if only they had any business being metallic-shiny instead of pus-shiny.

By the Emperor, that was a long sentence!

Update time!

@AngryJohnny: Thunder hammers it is:

Seeing as I wasn't able to fork out on a Crusader/Redeemer as well as the termies, i decided to turn my Assault Marine Sergeant into a counts as Shrike:

@OwenCrute: ah... shame about them being your brother's paints.

Right, now. For the past couple of weeks I've been PM'd a few times with people asking how to do metallic red. I will be adding red to my Viva Metallica Tutorial topic but not for a while. Till then I've painted up an old spare model for a quick and easy tut here: (Mods, I know it's not power armour, but it's just to show the effect of the paint, if you still want it removed then I will happily oblige :P)

1. black undercoat

2. mithril basecoat

3. badab black wash

4. baal red wash

5. another baal red wash

6. badab black wash

7. baal red wash

The last 2 aren't necessary, but if you want darker red , add them in.

This is the result without the last two:

Update part 2: (didn't want to cram 30 pics into a single post :))

After 3 weeks of hard graft and at least 50 coats of paint, I am proud to present:

The finished tactical squad:

Turns out that I didn't have to freehand the tactical arrows after-all, I just had to cut one end off of the DA tactical symbol transfer. :P much easier.

Hopefully, the first of many metallic marines :)

EDIT: spelling

they do look pretty cool, i wonder (this is a dumb question) but can you make a metallic black?

That's exactly what I want to know, I still have to figure out how to paint the black on my counts-as chaplain cassius and Legio B&C sternguard squad.

Thanks for the replies guys. <_<
