My first 5 BTs

Thank you!

I do have an IG army, so I have painted a few guardsmen... :) But on those I drybrushed the uniforms (still took me about 2 years to finish the army).

Now when I look at the pictures I remember that I'm not completely satisfied with the purity seals. Anyone have any tips on how to paint those? What colours to use?

Speed definitely hinders quality. I would keep it slow for the time being. As you paint the same colors repeatedly you will start learning tricks to streamline the process.

Also, very nice work. Black armor highlighting has some pretty significant challenges which you have managed to overcome deftly. Keep up the excellent painting.

Thanks for all the praise!

damn good work!!

What color setup did you use on the robes? I have problems getting a color setup I enjoy, I really dig yours.

DETAILS MAN GIVE THEM!!!!!!

Base is Graveyard Earth. Then Desert Yellow, Bleached Bone and finally Skull White. I try to use quite watered down paints and use multiple layers to get a smooth blend between colours.

Anyone got any advice on painting purity seals?

Awesome BT's! What ever you are doing, keep it up.

My recipe for purity seals is:

* Wax gets painted Bestial Brown, then Blood Red, then a thin coat of Flesh Wash. This gives the wax a sort of...well, waxy sheen and details the recesses

* Paper bit:

1. Scorched Brown, thinned

2. Bleached Bone, thinned

3. Skull White, thinned

4. A very thin glaze of Graveyard Earth to dull the paper bit

5. I do my scribbles with Scorched Brown

I hope that helps and if you would like to see some samples, let me know and I'll post a couple of pics.

Cheers,

Those are great! I've been at my BT army since the codex came out and I STILL cannot do a decent job with the edging.

Could you please post some advice on edging? Mine comes out looking either messily drybrushed or with the first highlight looking too thick.

As for the purity seals, those I can do a bit better. Here's an idea for you:

0) Over black primer...

1) paint paper part of the seal scorched brown, including back and sides.

2) paint paper part beastial brown but leave the back scorched brown.

3) paint the surface only (no the edges) of the paper part with one coat of bleached bone (you'll have to "season to taste" but I leave some brown showing through).

4) bleached bone again, paint laterally the raised areas only or drybrush the paper part. You want to reinforce the bleached bone on the raised parts.

5) final highlight with white but be very sparing. Somehow, that white becomes very white a day or two later (both when it dries and when you look again at your mini).

For the wax:

1) paint the whole wax part with the foundation red.

2) paint the raised parts (or drybrush if you have that much control or don't mind cleaning up around it) with the brightest citadel red (whose name escapes me).

3) extreme highlight with an orange mixed with that red.

Hope this helps.

Really really nice. I love the look of BTs. My one criticism is the look of the base rings. I think it takes away some from the stark black of the figs, and it will prob make the figs stand out better if they were on something like brown. Just my 2 cents. Otherwise, awesome stuff.

Those are some nice marines, really like the colors.

As for speeding up the painting process, assembly line paint. Don't try this straight onto your beloved new $50 marines, try it on some older models, ones you know you wont be needing for a looonnggg time. Sit down and paint, for example, all the metallics on the models, then move onto a different color (usually darker to lighter) then when you're satisfied with the colors, move onto the details (personally I wouldn't assembly line details, but that's me).

Wow. I go away over the weekend and the thread explodes. Thanks for all the replies, I'll try to answer your questions.

after seeing these i am ashamed of my templars :(

great work , i'd say its worth paiting 3h per model when they end up like this !

Actually it's more like 10h per model... (at least) :D

They look really good, I am also jealous of the battle board, looks like a nice setup for games.

Keep up the great work.

The board is far from finished. So far it's only things I've bought. I plan to make some larger LOS-blocking terain.

Awesome BT.

Really good job.

I also like you highlights any chance on a recipe?

The highlights is done in two steps. First a dark grey (mix of codex grey and chaos black, really don't remember the ratio but it's quite dark.) and finish with pure Codex grey. I'm not so thorough with the first layer, I just paint it around all the edges. Then finish with some codex grey, of course only on the edges.

embuchho: Thanks for the advice on purity seals. I'll try it on some future models.

Personally I like the black bases, but you might be correct that it takes away some of the attention from the models. I might try it. Thanks for the advice!

  • 4 weeks later...

Brad - those are magnificent, seriously.

I am working on an assault squad and trying to use yours as an example! I have the hardest time with the edging.

I think the bases are perfect, too. You *could* use a little less grass if you like as the green introduces a new color to the piece but heck, I think they look great as-is. Season to taste, as it were. :P

Awesome job, really.
