DavidKits: Thanks! Someone has said something like that before. I don't think it was the SDF-1, though I recall the name Macross...

Well gentlemen...I didn't get anything done this weekend. I went camping again :D

And when I got home this afternoon from school, I found that the package that I've been expecting for my Secret Santa from Serbia finally arrived!! With it I got a small load of BFG bitz in the form of Chaos and Imperials :D

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1712-1.jpg

So I may be able to finish another one or two of my ships. Hooray!

So I've painted a handful of details on the Glory.

http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh347/shortsonfire81/IMG_1722.jpg

I have basecoated the prow of the ship with Dheneb Stone and some Bleach Bone-mix thing from my Deathwing. That'll get the proper highlights once I finish the gold.

http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh347/shortsonfire81/IMG_1723.jpg

And this is the engine bank. I'll attempt to do the glowy blue that is commonly seen on BFG ships. We'll see how it turns out...

http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh347/shortsonfire81/IMG_1725.jpg

Something I've come to realize...is that the spot where I hold the model while I paint, is starting to chip...which is leaving me with terrible silver spots... And also some of the tips on the hangars are too...So I glued the ship to the base....which I figured I'd paint before I glued the ship on. And after I glued...I remembered...Oh well.

Thanks Ludovic and Sons of Horus! ^_^

So showing up on the last day of the BoB, my new toys have been really useful these past few hours. With the late arrival of my mail (4pm...) I was thrilled to find a box from Blick Studios!

In said box?

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1773.jpg

#2 extra firm Royal Sovereign Ltd UK Clay Shapers. (yeah, I don't know what half of that means) They're the smallest you can get, I believe, and made of firm rubber. When I ordered them, they were just listed at #2 Clay Shapers. So I got the ones I was hoping to get. ^_^

Only thing is...is that I think they may have been used. The flat chisel has some weird scored lines on it, on both sides, in a mirrored effect.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1774.jpg

I'm almost certain that they're supposed to be smooth. So after playing with the shapers for a good hour or so, I gave customer service a call. The robotic lady said that they'll ship me a whole new set, free of charge! :P

So that made me pretty happy.

After using them for a bit, I think that they're quite nice, and very useful. Though I don't see them doing anything that I haven't done before with a regular clay tool..except that its all much more simple.

So I tested them out by looking at examples from Lamenter and his Master of the Forge website. And Doghouse. Both have great techniques, and I'm attempting to mix the two.

Starting small with some heads. I used Lamenter's MKV tutorial for these. And the two knight looking ones, I used Forgeworld's Librarian Loth's command squad as an example. This picture was taken while the Greenstuff was still soft.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1772.jpg

I took the first marine that I had done, and started adding rivets, from a Brita water filter. But I screwed it up when I was drilling and tore up a bit of the greenstuff, AND made one of them in the wrong spot...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1775.jpg

I plan on buying a couple hundred rivets from Grandt, a model railroading company, with advice from Lamenter. These seem much easier to use, as I don't need to drill a hole first in order to get them to actually look rivet-ish.

http://www.masteroftheforge.com/files/images/mkvheadtutorial/mkvhead14.jpg

Thats all I'm sharing for now, as I have a couple other projects that I've started. I don't want to throw all my precious material at you! :D

Let me know what you think :) I'm pretty new to this sculpting thing, and if you have any tips and pointers, I'd be happy to hear them :)

Thanks guys. :D

Lord Andreas, I'd love to see any BFG that you pump out! :D

Inquisitor Xenethor. Thank you for the kind words. :) I found an old picture that I circled things and added annotations. For some reason, it got SUPER blurry!! D: D:

I can write you a parts list though:

Battleship Retribution prow and main weapons area

Battleship Retribution "wing" piece. x2 (one from a Emperor Class)

Battleship Retribution hull piece

Battleship Retribution bridge and eagle piece

Battleship Retribution hull details, rudder

Battlebarge hull and bridge

Battlebarge nose piece

Battlebarge fins

Battlebarge and Retribution Engines

Space Marine Cruiser, x2, flipped upside down.

Plastic IN Cruisers and Chaos Cruiser bits all over it.

That should be about it. I'll try and dig up some more WIP pictures if you'd like, though I think most are already on this thread.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/myphoto-3.jpg

Heres my latest project, also following Lamenter's techniques/tutorials. I'm really just playing around with some looks, and working on getting the feel of the tools, and how they work. Using Lamenter's pictures, I know what the model is actually supposed to look like.

This is an extended and bulked up chainsword arm. I cut the forearm in half, and added a 1mm piece of plasticard, and then greenstuffed the armor plate around it. After that dried, I added the wrist cuff. And then today, the elbow pad.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1778.jpg

I like the way it looks, though it doesn't look all that much bigger. When I put it on my original True Scale man, the arm was quite stumpy...and when I put it on a normal man, it looked fat.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1776.jpg

You sharp eyed hawks may notice that there is a lump in the forearm. I assume that thats A: Where I made the cut (which I'm sure it is) or B: an air bubble in my greenstuff, which has happened to me before. Several attempts at smoothing it at the beginning, 2 hours later, and 5 hours later didn't help at all. I attempted to sand it before adding the elbowpad, but it didn't help. It'll be fixed on the next arm ;)

Some of you may remember my first couple attempts at sculpting tiny details for my Space Marine chapter...Funny right?

http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss63/Shortsonfire82/IMG_2466.jpg

Well, now that I know how to use my tools properly, I've given it a second go. I think the outcome is MUCH nicer, though it still needs a lot of stuff to be cleaned up, notably the fingers. I am still quite pleased with myself. :P

You should try to pick up some Pro Create grey putty to sculpt with. You can actually sand it when it hardens and I find it easier to work with than green stuff. Your work already looks good so I would imagine even better results with "Grey Stuff."

Mikhail, I'll look into it. I'm not too keen on spending some more money on putty quite yet, I want to get a feel of the tools and greenstuff first. ;) Thanks for the compliment

Well, seeing as everyone else is posting their WIP true scales, I figured I would too, I was planning on holding this back for a day or so, as hes not quite finished. But I'm eager to get some feedback on him. His arms and backpack are blue-tacked on, but the torso and legs are attached. I need to add some major details like tubes for his stomach and panel lines and such. I'm still using these few models for tests with my clay shapers, so I can get used to them and such. You'll notice some blemishes on the putty, and probably more than a few lumps here and there as well.

I'm looking into some brown stuff, as I could possibly get harder angles with it, though I'll have to do more experimenting with green stuff before I spend even more money.

After looking at a normal marine, I realize that his torso is MUCH too skinny around the waist, something that I'll have to look into in the second model. We'll see what you guys think and what I should be changing on him.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1783.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1784.jpg

A picture with a normal marine. You can see that hes not actually that much bigger than him height-wise, but he is bulkier looking (considering the normal man doesn't have any arms)

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1782-1.jpg

And a picture with my first true scaled Marneus Calgar. You can see hes considerably smaller, but is much more well done. I'm sure I'll eventually get the hang of it.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1785.jpg

After looking around some other true scales from times of old, I've noticed that things like panel lines and the like should be modeled with a wet knife while the putty is still soft, so unfortunately, I missed that with this guy. Next one though. :)

I'm also researching/testing some ways to make true scales without using terminator legs..because these things are damn expensive! If you have any ideas, please give me a shout out. :P

You have convinced me that I dont really need TDA arms to do my own True Scale guys. So far that is all I've used, since they look great. They are kinda hard to get good poses with tough, and this kind of marine arms actually doest not look bad at all. When I first found them on Master of the Forges' page I didnt really like it. But they do look kinda good  And it keeps the cost a little bit lower.

That said, keep up the good work!

Natanael: Master of the Forge (Lamenter)'s page is pretty informative. Most of my test sculpt ideas/tutorials came from there. (if not all) and although I like his models, his techniques are something that I probably won't be able to replicate for a while yet.

I think its safe to call my man finished.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1793.jpg

Instead of doing truescaling, I think I'll just attempt to replicate armor variants that FW hasn't done yet. IE: Make up my own... (or have my design student friend do some for me). The truescaling was fun and all, but the amount of effort going into just one guy, with the half-shoddy outcome just isn't satisfying...

I have also spent a good... 8 hourly sessions (I can count from all the layers..) on this guy's legs. Its my first attempt at layered armor, using Lamenter's techniques. I think for a starter, it came out alright. You can see where some of the lower levels of green stuff has kind of folded/wrinkled because I was impatient and started the next layer after about 3 hours. Mistake. It was just a test, but I should probably go back and sand it down a little. Its not terrible, but after looking at it for a while, it pops out at me.

Also note that sculpting is difficult, and attempting to sculpt something fairly symmetrical on one leg, then attempting to do it on the other is not something that I will ever be good at. I can't even do it drawing with a ruler! D: Woe is me...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1792.jpg

And I also tested out a couple other true scale techniques on my pile of random test subjects I acquired from someplace...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1789.jpg

Far Left, Calgar: Terminator legs with an extension somewhere in the shin plastic. The feet are slightly angled in from the extension, but its hardly noticeable. The chest was also bulked out forwards and sideways. I used terminator arms, a normal sized helm and a normal sized backpack.

Second from left: Terminator legs, with just some greenstuff around the backs. The chest piece was bulked out forwards, but not left to right, therefor making the model skinnier around the waist. The arms were normal marine arms, with 1mm extensions in the forearms and greenstuff armor resculpted. Normal head, and expanded backpack.

Middle: Extended shins and thighs by 1mm. The legs look longer, but without altering the torso, it looks funny. Also note the wide stance. Not even close to being as tall as the other two marines.

Second from right: Extended shins by 1mm. Not much shorter nor taller than the two marines next to it. You can see that the feet are angled because of the extensions since they are not proportional.

Far Right: Normal snap fit marine.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1796.jpg

Let me know what you think about all of that.

My next project has hit the table, though I haven't made any actual progress yet, just some sketches.

Hopefully you can deduce what I'll be doing. I'll explain later :)

And like the second part of the thread title says...we have a problem.... I foresee work on something in this post to be postponed...one way or another.

Alright guys...well...I've definitely been neglecting my posting duties... :(

I'll get to all the threads eventually! ;) But the past night and a half, I started sculpting my first Sister of Battle...its cruddy, but it'll do for now.

And a size comparison with a real sister.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1932.jpg

And I have to paint these in 10 days... and its rainy, so I have to prime them by hand too probably D:

I agree with GooseDaMoose about the sisters. They look cool. It seems quite small, but that might be the true-scaling of marines I'm doing kicking in. Hope to see more of it.

  • 3 weeks later...

Alright, back with another BFG ship. This time, there are minimal conversions, and its not another of my 'over compensating' projects.

This is going to be a Rogue Trader ship. I tried to sculpt a prow for something smaller, first starting with a hunk of melded plasticard, then angling a thin sheet, to sculpting my own....It didn't work too well...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1945.jpg

So this one, I just covered up the Imperial lines to give it a nice, smooth prow.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1946.jpg

After letting it sit on my desk for about an hour, I decided that I wanted to paint it red (the other two will be gray, and green). Though now that it is painted...it looks a lot like a chaos color scheme. I was looking at BA pictures, and I was thinking an all white prow, what do you all think?

And also with a new color for the prow, I can re-smooth down that lump. I decided to cut off the side cannons mid-paint, and it screwed it up...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1948.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1949.jpg

Edit 6 hours later. After FINALLY getting bored of Minecraft, I had a small burst (half hour) of modeling mojo. I finished my Grand Cruiser wannabe, which will be another Rogue Trader ship (yes, the Fabimp only lists cruisers, so rules wise, it'll be that). Fluff wise, some Rogue Trade frigate came upon a dilapidated hulk of a Grand Cruiser, and brought it to a ship yard where debts were owed or something. I dunno. Hahah.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1951.jpg

Also...After flipping through the Additional Ship Compendium, I found the Inquisitorial Black Ship. (Pg 24) which I think looks pretty snazzy. So I'm going to make one. :cuss If you happen to have the prow/wings of a Space Marine Battle Cruiser, I'll happily take them off your hands. I can probably make do without, but it would be a great help if I didn't need to bother.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/Screenshot2011-04-06at125844AM.png

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1950.jpg

Couldn't find my baggie of flying bases... The ones I bought were for reavers or something Dark Eldar, so theres a little bubble on the tip. I chopped it off for the Grand Cruiser (which is why its so short).

Shorts, everything is looking good thus far especially the True Scale marines. I was wondering if you could give me a link to the supplier you gat the Grandt Line rivets from as well as the size of them. I'd like to try them myself and the local shops don't seem to be able to get them for me. Thanks in advance for your help.

I really like your crazy huge BFG ship.

In response to the first page about not knowing what a Conversion Beamer looks like, there's one in the Codex:Grey Knights, for anyone who doesn't have access to the old material.

Here's a picture from back in the day:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/Ieyke/Warhammer%2040k/2zodrg3.jpg

The one in Codex Grey Knights looks basically the same, albeit with the grip and trigger on top instead of on bottom.

Thanks Emperor's Champion. I've seen that picture before, just though it was some funky needle cannon or something.

Moving along then. I think that I just need to alter the wings and I could call this done. I'm still on the hunt for a couple of detail pieces to stick on the metal part of the bridge, that flat part looks hideous.

The ship looks funky, though I still think it looks pretty nice...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1959.jpg

Edit: Really rough idea of how I may be doing some of the FW transports/freighters/escorts. I ordered some silicone couple days ago, lets see if Digit's gs tutorial actually helps.

On a more personal note, I've finished assembling my new computer. But upon turning it on...nothing happened :D so more frustration from me... I don't even know what I did wrong....

On your large battleship conversion, I wouldn't recommend doing a blue engine glow on the model since so much of it is already blue. You might get away with a light cyan or turquoise but it might be better to try an orange-red to play off the complementary colors in order to make the engine glow pop more.

Thanks for the tip Vaaish. I know you're good with BFG. I was actually thinking along the same lines, going with red. But as I sit in my car thinking about this, Im thinking I may go with a white-purple. I know blue is super hot, and purple is pretty close to the same color spectrum.

The entire fleet is blue, so id better come up with a pretty solid idea of what ill be doing.

I dont' have much in terms of fluff. Just whats on Lexicanum and the Additional Ships Compendium.

Lexicanum

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/Screenshot2011-04-07at73601PM.png

Though I'll definitely be making something to resemble this. I have 3 chaos cruiser hulls that I don't know what to do with, and this looks like it'll suck up one.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/1/1c/InquisitorialBlackShip.jpg

And I want to add some freehand to the prow, like Hypo said, but its dinky, and I don't know what I could add...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1964.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1965.jpg

At the top you can see my first 'badass Rogue freehand' then some other stupid ideas. I'm thinking of making a heraldry shield that will go on my fleet and all the ships operating in tandem with them. On the shield you see a dark patch, that'd be dark blue. Black/white checkers, and I'm on the hunt for some Terra heraldry as well.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1968.jpg

And I threw some paint on the other Rogue ship, though it looks quite bland. I'm thinking of splashing it with some Dark Angels green instead...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1966.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_1967.jpg

Any ideas?

Alright... trying my hand at some smaller ships. Basically FW escorts/freighters and such. I like where its going....but after I finished with the plasticard...I started thinking that the prow is much too wide... I'm not sure what to do...leave it as so, or just make it into some other class of ship...or scrap it. I don't have any of the FW ships' pictures with a scale shot, so I'm assuming that the picture with the escort ship that has 3 launchbays is to the same size...hopefully. And I'm thinking I may cannibalize the rear end of a frigate for the engines, though I'm tempted to just make it myself. If all turns out well, I plan on casting these when I'm done...I don't want to have to hand make a bajillion of these... :P
