Having once again made the mistake of wandering into a Games Workshop store with money in my pocket, I have the first of a possible 10 man tactical squad to display...

Laterz...

I really like what you've done here, and keeping in mind how large the pictures are, I think it's a nice amount of detail.

The recipe seems kind of large and involved though. I wonder how long did it take you to paint this guy? Could you do a full army at this pace?

Anyway, well done. About time there was some White Scars on the board again.

@Prot - He took me a day to paint... which for a test model isn't too bad... I reckon if I batch painted 5 of them it would take 5 evenings or a weekend... so 10 models/week... reasonable army painting schedule, particularly for marines...

@Alpha PTP - Cheers... White is a difficult "colour" to paint, so I knew people might ask... plus it's much more simple and quick than it sounds...

@Tagsta - Cheers... Well for a ranged tac squad a close combat weapon seemed largely pointless and the combi-weapons look the dogs preverbials... inspired a little by the new sternguard vets... I layed off on the jagged pattern that the 'Eavy Metal team used for theirs as prefer the simplicity of "pure" white armour.

@SBF - Thanks... the purity seal looks more "differentiated" in real life, I used a fairly bright table light to illuminate him for the pics, only problem is it brightened the natural shadows a bit too much...

Again Cheers guys... keep the comments coming...

Laterz...

One of the tricky things about painting white right is to save the white paint for the highlighting and shading of the lighter parts of the armor.

If you take a look at this mini:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/pics/pics11/img468d02aeb4aba.jpg

you will see that the white is "built up" to the "higher" parts of the armor components and the highlights, while the lower parts of armor components are a light grey.

The majority of your white is just plain white, I think some light shades of grey could really spice it up.

@The Fated Fith - Cheers, I get the cartoony comment a bit actually... guess it's just my style of painting, and hey, it works for me, glad you like the battle damage, for a model that's quite plain in many ways it really helps add interest and it's so easy to do...

@Imyrick - Thanks, I'm getting increasingly tempted by fantasy at the moment, the new chaos warriors book is drawing me in...

@Sigvatr - The model isn't pure white, the problem is I took the photo at night so had to use the potent desk lamp (that I use when painting) to illuminate the model... It kind of killed some of the shadows, the white layers I used were quite thin so some of the shading shows through in real life giving a slightly more blended look, but as always a camera phone and poor lighting limit the quality of my photos...

Keep 'em coming...

  • 4 weeks later...

Necro for...

New models and new pics!! (see first post)

Combat squad finally complete, I've actually really enjoyed doing these guys,

but the horrors of a time consuming day job delayed them a lot!!

The tutorial was followed to the letter, so no changes there... The only thing that

is additional is that the tactical symbol was freehanded on with:

- chaos black

- edges tidied with skull white

- highlighted with charadon granite

- highlighted with adeptus battlegrey

Job done... now I just have 5 more to do... :-P

C&C welcome as always...

Laterz...

As I happen to be trolling (again)... :-P

When doing a Mk8 with a helmet I always completely remove the neck from the head

then fill the neck section of the torso with GS, paint seperately then glue the head in

later with superglue... finito...

And thank you ShinyRhino... much appreciated...

@ Cygnwulf - Cheers... Though true the NMM areas are damage free...

though they don't look too bright and shiny in real life thankfully...

the little chips and scratches are meant to be chipped and scratched paint...

not shredded plates... it is power armour after all... tough stuff...

I may add similar scratches to the NMM at some point, but not right now...

As for the grime It's meant to be dust from the rocky debris... so hasn't

spread above the knees (and therefore not onto the backpack...)

Cheers for the response... more comments welcome...

You see this is a classic example that a model taken with a poor quality camera(camera phone) up way too close makes a model look like a dogs breakfast :) ....wait im not done yet :P

and then you look at the shots further down of the models at a little range(where most peeps look at them)and the paintjobs look stunning!!! it proves my point that half the models shown on these forums are better in real life than they appear here...

these models are great stuff keep em coming :)

cheers Mithril

@ GAR - I did remove the mould lines... the pics are at such high resolution

that the tiny bit of residue is still visible... it's not noticable in real life.

@mithrilforge - I got what you were talking about before you started the

explaination... I only have a camera phone... so my pics aren't great... particularly

the close ups of 1 figure... But cheers, liking the compliment at the end... <_<

Laterz Guys... keep 'em coming...

@ Sons of Horus - Cheers... Glad you like them... had the pleasure of popping in to my local GW again today

and got some nice comments... Another guy had just started down the White Scars path too, so he was very

interested...

The only thing currently delaying the start of the second 5 guys is that I'm having a go at making a proper Mk5

helmet... It's turning out OK, but not 100% happy yet... May give up and try again later... or go for a Mk4 instead.

We'll see...

As plans go I'm aiming to get the next 5 done by about 2 weeks from now... 1 Plasma Gun, 1 Plasma Cannon...

(seeing a theme maybe??) and 1 in Mk5 armour, +4 Mk7s... may try and sneak a Mk4 in there anyway... but do need

to work on my helmet conversions a bit... (sooo fiddly)...

Anyway, Laterz Guys... any suggestions welcome... ;)
