Scythes of the Emperor Paint-A-Thon

Greetings one and all. I have decided to start a new army in celebration of the new Codex. I had four squads of tactical marines lying around, and my All Hallows Guard are based off of 4th edition. With Tank Hunter-less devastators, and the ability to not have a heavy weapon in a tactical squad unless it is ten men strong, I need to figure out a new army. Anywho, let's move onto the models!

I had a Hall of Honor thread to show off my test marine. I got some good responses and advice, and I have tried to apply it to this current model. I am going for above table-top quality with this army. I really want to win another Best Army award, so I will try my hardest. I plan on getting some transfer paper and print out SotE symbols, but if I can't, I'll free hand them.

Here is the first model. I hope to update this every-other day. I am part of a lot of the drama and art department at my school, so I can get a tad busy. Also, help me decide what kind of bases I want to do. I might cast some resin bases and create some cool stuff.

what color are his shoulder pads gonna be , yellow inset or trim?

Yellow inset with the double scythe insignia. Maybe a small yellow scythe freehand painting on the right hand.

Thanks for all of the kind words so quickly. I am going to try and finish him up by tomorrow. It depends on how swamped I let myself get.

I think hes coming along great. The face is really well started and the yellow balance thus far is nice. I would suggest maybe doing a little more extream grey shading on the black. But otherwise a really promising start. This will be fun to watch develop.
care to tell us your yellow recipe ..??

go on,,,, :)

Certainly.

  1. Base model with white primer. I use Krylon Outdoor primer, but I have also used Armory primer. Both work just as well, but Amory can "crackle."
Paint the desired yellow area's with a watered down Sunblast Yellow (Vallejo Game Color. I haven't used GW paints in years.)
Do a 5:1:2 ratio of Yellow Ink, Chestnut Ink, and water.
    Highlight with Sunblast Yellow.
    Highlight with Bald Moon Yellow.
    Highlight with White.
Use Chestnut Ink to go into the cracks of armor plating. Don't use too much, or it will go all over the yellow.

Despite how complicated it sounds, it is quite fast. I got the yellow done on four models in about an hour or so. That isn't bad considering it is one, if not the most dominate part of the model.

Ok that Skin is much better them my local guy. (You know the one)

I'm for dead 'Nids on the base (given the backround) or maybe a sorta Urban them? Sorta like the Venguard Vets's Bases

I really don't like putting dead-things on bases. I find that it looks tacky. I also don't have any Tyranid friends who could give me scraps to load my bases with. :) I was thinking of doing an urban or industrial theme. Who knows, I'll test when I find the time to take away from the models, rather than the bases.

Very nice to see you getting places with this army. Also it's nice to hear you're going for the double-scythes as a symbol. I think that's definitely a key part of the Chapter.

Good luck! Have you given any thought to an army list?

Yup, looking tops. The painting itself is awesome, but I'd personally be careful about making the contrast too strong between the recesses and the lightest level of highlights. To me it's bordering on too drastic a difference with that super pale yellow you're moving up to, next to the comparatively simple black, though ultimately that's just a style preference. Squads of these guys would look absolutely excellent... I'd love to see a character model too :)
that's what im talking about. he looks sweet!!! well i think you have to go with yellow shoulders so you can see your chapter insignia. black trim. but the black trim might get lost with his chest plate. maybe all yellow. could work, not sure though, but i am sure that i love the paint job.

I know I want to do a unit of Sternguard, but make them Deathwatch as I said in the other thread. I find it fitting that the SotE would employ other marines to help them, seeing as how there are barely two battle companies left. It will be a pain to paint the two scythes, but if I can find a way of printing off transfers, I will do it. So... all I have planned in my list are seven terminators and a terminator Chaplain (my heavily converted one from the All Hallows Guard.), a Crusader, two tactical squads, and one unit of Sternguard. That is just what is up in the air. I have to read more into the Codex.

@Khrangar: There is a good idea, but I want to see what else I can do.

@Draakur: As I said, a character model is in the concept art stage. I understand what you mean, and I will keep it in consideration when painting future miniatures, mate.

@sugar-free: I think I am going to do the inset yellow with the symbol black. I might do it reverse for officers or characters. We'll see. Glad you approve of the new paint scheme! :)

for the painting problem, a stencil based on the transfer sheet that is out there could work well.

Nice... Loving the skin, very smooth... the yellow looks even better than before and the black looks excellent...

**prods gently** Finish him!!

He will be finished by tomorrow when I update again. I didn't get that much work done on him last night, but I can work a lot tonight. I'm glad the black looks a lot better. That is going to make painting my chaplain possible for me. When I originally built him, I was too scared of painting him because I couldn't paint black well.

@CorinoFan: There are places on the web where you can buy blank transfer papers. I just need to figure out where. I already know where I can get some good stencils.

You've done a great paint job there. Especially the yellow looks very crisp. Not to mention that the face looks awesome.

I read the suggestion about the Tyranid bits and can understand your dislike for alien bodies on your bases.

But an old tutorial about battle damages came to mind. It can't be found on the new GW homepage but some countries/regions haven't moved to the new website, so I found it here Battle Damage Tutorial by GW.

I'd go for scratches and acid to reflect battles against the Tyranids without having to show them. But that's a matter of taste, your marine is great as it is right now.

And you've got a little typo in your subtitle, the home world is Sotha.

Keep 'em coming, can't wait to see more.
