WIP: "Counts As" Vulkan He'Stan!

Recommended Posts

I'm going to create a "Counts As" Vulkan He'Stan for my DIY. I've begun work on him & have some pictures to share. Right now all I have is the Gauntlet of the Forge converted. I'd love to hear what you all think of it as well as any suggestions you all may have for building He'Stan.

Oh wow that is just amazing! I wish you posted this a few months ago when I did my Vulkan, I would have taken your idea in no time. :D

The effect is perfect, not complicated at all on how it works, and I love the 2 flamer tips, just priceless. ;)

Can't wait to see more.

Thanks for the praise! I would love to see your take on Vulkan. Do you have any pictures?

I think it looks good and will work very well. Very original :).

Thank you!

It looks good. The fuel tank is a bit small though. Might I suggest tubing to Huron Blackheart's backpack? (deChaosified of course)

I was afraid of the fuel tank looking a little small. That's why I incorporated a 2nd one on to the fist itself. (I don't know if you can see it in the pictures) I haven't actually seen Huron Blackheart's backpack. Do you have any pictures?

Actually I made a little WIP post early september, right here.

If you want to see the finished product then just go to the second to last page and scroll all the way down (note someone posted their own version of a sallies commander that looks amazing, note that this isn't mine :teehee:).

I based him off of a PAGK and I couldn't be happier. I also used the older heavy flamer tip.

Looks awesome.

I do think the fuel tank should be a bit larger though seeing as it's supplying two flamers.

Man,imagine being smashed in the face by 2 red-hot flamers then straight after a massive fist smashed your head into bloody pulp!!

Looking forward to seeing the rest!

Hey thats bloody cool. But why do people always put MASSIVE flamer heads on the gauntlet? Why not hidden pipes or not easy to see bits to represent the flamers?

Because people out there are always out to prove people wrong and try to pull crap like (WYSIWYG, I don't see the heavy flamer so you don't have one...)

Initially I had had modeled it with the 1 fuel tank hanging down & cut off the claws & drilled out four holes. The artwork in the codex shows him having basically a power fist with a few outlets for the flame & I was trying to match that. However, once I had finished it, I felt it just looked too much like a power fist with a fuel tank. And as Wolf89 mentioned, I don't want to run into any WYSIWYG issues when I field him. Also, I'm not doing a Salamanders army, I just really like He'Stan & think he will fit perfectly with my DIY army which is siege based. So I figured a little artistic license to make it more obvious that it was a Heavy Flamer would be OK.

Thanks! I'm looking for other bits that I may be able to use to either add a fuel tank on his backpack or a way to enlarge the tank that is under-slung. For now I like how it looks, we'll have to see how it looks when it's attached to the model though. I also need simplicity as I have zero skill with GS. I'm heading down to my local store today to make a few purchases & hope to start working on the rest of him tonight or tomorrow so there will definitely be more WIP shots as I go along. I haven't quite figured out how to represent the Artificer Armor just yet though. I don't want to go too over the top but want it to stand out. I was thinking of using the Metallic Color method that Metcalfeden has posted for his Crimson Fists to differentiate the Armor from the rest of the army, but I am most definitely open to suggestions!

Wow, I really like your version of He'Stan. I was thinking of using the weapon from the Grey Knights in Power Armor for my He'Stan also, but I don't want to use the Grey Knight PA. Are the weapon arms (the spear in particular) separate from the rest of the model? Also, what bit did you use for the fuel tank on his backpack?

I'm open to any other suggestions that you all may have for me on my endeavor to create my own version of He'Stan! More to come soon!

The spear (nemesis force weapon :) ) does come separate, but with the shoulder pad attached, so you may still be using the shoulder, who knows, either way it's not too hard to detach it if you wanted to.

I chose to use the GK PA simply because it was ornate enough to look like artificer armour without getting the bulkiness. As for his tank, the first one (top one that actually looks good) was from the multi-melta canisters off one of my speeders, as for the other one (the one the pipes or whatever you call them go into) that was made from green stuff.

Cool, thanks. I went down to my local store and picked up a blister of the GK in PA so I can use the arm. I'm debating whether to use the shoulder pad that is attached or not. So far I'm thinking that I'm going to replace it. I also picked up some other stuff so I can start to piece my "Counts As" He'Stan together. Hopefully I'll get some work on him done tonight & post some more pictures ASAP. I'm still trying to figure out how to do the Artificer Armor though. For the torso I'm going to use the back piece from the SM Commander box and the front piece from the Company Champion in the Command Squad box. I think I'm going to use the Commander backpack as well. I just haven't decided on the legs. I was thinking of using the MK6 legs, but I'm worried about them looking too plain. I'm going to do some searches for Artificer Armor & see if I can find something that inspires me.

I've finished piecing together my "Counts As" Vulkan He'Stan. I have to say I'm extremely proud of him. I'll be posting pictures in the morning. (I don't want to wake up my wife). I finally figured out how to represent the Artificer Armor for him & it was a lot easier than I had expected.

I've also finished piecing together my Sternguard Veteran squad that will act as He'Stan's personal body guard.

Greetings Brothers!

As promised here are the pictures of my "finished" WIP build of Vulkan He'Stan. As I'm not playing the Salamanders, he's not really Vulkan He'Stan. His name is Fearghus Anyon. He will be accompanied by his personal body guard- a Sternguard Veteran Squad.

Well, without further delay, I present Fearghus Anyon!

You can view more images of the Sternguard Squad in my Sternguard Veteran Squad WIP thread.

Not bad at all, I really like what you've done on the legs to help reflect artificer armor.

Thank you! I found it in the Tutorials thread when I searched for 'Artificer'. (Here is the thread.) I'm really pleased with how the armor turned out. It looks a lot bulkier in my opinion also, which is what I was going for.

The rest of his squad looks very unique. Only problem is I don't think there's enough flamers in there. ;)

LOL. I agree. Once I get some more flamers, I'll be converting each of the Bolters into Combi-Flamers. Ultimately, I want to have 2 Heavy Flamers & 3 Combi-Flamers to make up the Squad. I actually only need 1 more Flamer, 1 more Multi-Melta & 2 Terminator Heavy Flamers to finish the Squad how I want. Need to wait a little while though. So for now, it's only 3 templates from this group. :)

He looks great really. Good job again ;).

Thanks, I appreciate the comments!

Oh that is freaking awesome!!! I absolutely cannot wait to see that painted! I can never read whole topics but I know you said this was gonna be a counts as, so if you're not doing him as Salamanders I can't wait to see him even more! I want to do a Vulkan for my Red Dragons Space Marines so this has given me some great ideas :tu:

I've seen some WIP's that were in very actiony poses which I didn't like, even from different Chapters I have the image of Vulkan being very stern and imposing, which yours captures perfecly

I'm going to create a "Counts As" Vulkan He'Stan for my DIY.

it's for his diy, not salamanders.

think the model looks good, though i was never a fan of sticking a helmeted head in the co. champion chestplate with a gorget, but thats just personal bias

The finished model looks great, the mix of parts really makes him look unique.

Love the way you've added the send fuel canister on the fist!

Now get him painted!

Thanks a lot! The whole time I was putting him together I was afraid I was going to have to scrap the whole thing, but luckily my lack of planning came together the model looks like I wanted it to. I'm most proud his Gauntlet of the Forge. I had read a post were someone (can't remember who, sorry) had suggested taking the lightning claw & trimming the claws off & drilling out some holes in the knuckles to represent the flame nozzles. So I gave it a try & it looked too much like a power fist with holes, so I started rummaging through my bits box. I had seen a Sternguard with a custom heavy flamer (from Metcalfeden, Post # 2) that used the 2 flamer heads & was inspired... I'm really pleased with how the Gauntlet of the Forge turned out. I think it makes the model.

WOW! Thanks! I agree, the action pose didn't suit the vision of what I had in my head. I had actually started with a pose that had more action & I really didn't like it. I almost had him holding the spear parallel to the ground but I didn't think it gave him the menacing feel that I think he has now. He is going to be used as a "Counts As" yes. My army is an Imperial Fist successor. The paint is still green, but not the same shade. Here's the color scheme for my army. This is how I'll be painting him, but there will be more gold. ^_^ I hope to begin painting him within the next week or so. (I don't have a day off again until Tuesday) Do you have a link to any images of your Red Dragons? I'd love to see them. Any army that would count He'Stan as a fit is a win to me.

Like the other, nice work...

But... (yes, just a tiny one)

The two eagle of the backpack... for salamanders... It doesn't correspond well, but it's only my opinion..

And it's a very good opinion. I agree if it were for a Salamanders army the eagles would be very out of place. However, I'm not doing a Salamanders army. My army is actually an Imperial Fist successor, so the Eagle is a perfect fit. ;)

None of the figures in my Army have a bare head. Everyone has a helmet. To me it doesn't make sense to go into battle with this fantastic Power Armor and leave something as critical as your head exposed. ;) Plus, I can't paint flesh to save my life, so it saves me some embarrassment. ;) I do think with a skilled painter the bare heads add a certain amount of drama that you just can't get with the helmet. They have the capacity to capture the emotion of the model. I was originally going to use the Company Champion helmet on this model as I love the helmet. Once I got the legs & the arms bulked out with the Artificer Armor though, the Company Champion helmet looked too small. I chose this helmet because it was the largest one I had & seemed to fit the bulk of the rest of the armor.

That's quite nice! I really like the markings on the right knee pad. A nice dusky tone :)

Yes here is some linkage to a topic and my photobucket thing, I only set them both up about an hour ago to get some advice, so if you have any I'd appreciate it ;) heheh! There's a slighty Japanese flavour to them.
