cathar the great
Hi brothers! I recently obtained two Black-Reach Dreads. I wanted to do something special with them, so I took a look at my bitz-box and thought about easy conversions to fit with the two big boys. Since the conversions I did on the first one were rather easy, I decided to share some of the process with you. This Tutorial is for Black-Reach Dreads, but you can of course do this with normal dreads, too, it will probably look a lot better. Also, I am not the cleanest converter, and I don't claim to be. My tools are: - Kitchen Knife i obtained a couple of years ago (by nicking it from my mother's kitchen drawers) - A nail file, also obtained at about the same time (by nicking it from my mother's beauty case) - And the pair of clippers that came with the last version of the Hobby Starter Kit by GW (not from my mother) Good thing I moved out after stealing so much stuff from my mum, come to think of it. Now let's get started: I. The Mk IV Front Plate 1. You start with the normal Black-Reach Dread front: http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/FrontTut01.jpg 2. And a Terminator Torso Front and some random bit from your box. I used half of a Landspeeder Searchlight, obtained from the Ravenwing Sprue, that will neatly fit UNDER the termi-torso: http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/FrontTut02.jpg 3. Next, use your file to smoothen the surface of the Sarcophagus Front Plate. I didn't do this very properly, just to have a smooth enough surface to attach the other bits. If you do it better, it will surely look better, too. 4. Also smooth the back of the terminator torso-front to make it even. The pieces should now look something like this: http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/FrontTut03.jpg 5. Next step is pretty obvious. Glue the torso front and the random bit on the smoothened sarcophagus plate: http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/FrontTut04.jpg http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/FrontTut05.jpg 6. Now you just have to search your box for a fitting head. Be sure to use a smaller, but helmeted one. Bare heads on Dreads look stupid, and too big ones also don't look that good. My best guess would be the Warhammer Fantasy Chaos helmets, sans horns and chaosy stuff. DONE! Next up will be the 'humanized hand'... cathar the great
The idea behind this was to have a hand for my Ironclad conversion, in which he could rest his Seismic Hammer. I don't have any WiP pictures of this, since I already did it yesterday and am not going to do it again. But I hope the thing is self-explaining. II. The Humanized Hand 1. First, take the normal Close-Combat Arm that comes with the Black Reach dread. Don't assemble it, the whole process is easier if you don't! http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HandTut01.jpg 2. Now, you carefully cut of all the fingers of the dread right where I marked it. Be very careful here, the fingers should stay mostly intact! http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HandTut05.jpg 3. Smoothen the surface of the remaining stump and re-arrange the fingers in any way you like. This is how I did it: http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HandTut03.jpg http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HandTut04.jpg 4. This will probably look a lot better if you do it with a standard dread arm, since the fingers are a lot more accessible. [HINT] On my humanized hand, the thumb is actually a piece of plastic sprue cut to fit, since I lost the fourth finger somewhere. Those basterds are tiny! And last but not least, my version of the Seismic Hammer... Sigismund Himself
Wow! Neat ideas. Can we add these to the Librarium, cathar? cathar the great
This conversion came to be rather randomly. The biggest part of it was already in use for a number of stuff I broke down again, like a Blastmaster for Chaos or a machine gun, also for chaos. I don't have any WiP pictures of it either, but I will just use two pictures to visually break it down for you. It should just be an idea for you to make your own. III. The Seismic Hammer http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HammerTut01.jpg http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HammerTut02.jpg Red - Part of a gun (I don't recall the english name, is it machine- or auto-gun) that comes with the Imperial Guard Heavy Weapon Team Green - A trimmed down Las-Cannon from the plastic Devastator-Sprue. This sprue is absolutely awesome, by the way. Blue - The rest of a Space Marine Flamer with both fuel canister and grip clipped off. White - Piece of a Chaos Space Marine Backpack I found lying around. Very random, just to fill the empty space. Yellow - Piece of a Las-Can from some Space Marine Vehicle, I think. This bit has been around my table for some time... Two more pictures without scribble: http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HammerTut03.jpg http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/HammerTut04.jpg Conclusion Well, now we have to think about how we can put this hammer on our dread? And how will the front plate look with a helmet in it? And what the fudge is this guy talking about? This is my Ironclad so far. The multi-melta is just stand-in, I want to build a Hurricane Bolter System but have no idea yet: http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/Ironclad01.jpg http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/Ironclad02.jpg http://tortureentertainment.blogsport.de/images/Ironclad03.jpg Wow! Neat ideas. Can we add these to the Librarium, cathar? That would be awesome of course! Kadaeux
Great conversion work, with (in my opinion) one exception. The Seismic Hammer. It might be different once painted but as it is just looks like a jumble of parts instead of a hammer. In fact it looks more like the Dread ripped it off of an Ork Battlewagon! wiplash
not so keen on the hammer looks too much like a bunch f guns stuck to gether imo! but the other two look fabulous especially the hand thats a really neat idea Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151982-modelling-easy-dreadnought-tutorials-pic-heavy/#findComment-1769231 Share on other sites
Skoby
Love the way youve done the sarcophagus thing, I know what I'm doing with my terminator from WD now  I can see where you were going with the thunderhammer but I think would work better if it was integrated into the arm rather than held, I do like your more human hands tho. Lots of ideas to "borrow" tho  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151982-modelling-easy-dreadnought-tutorials-pic-heavy/#findComment-1769244 Share on other sites

cathar the great
Thanks for all the praise guys. It was really fun doing this tutorial, I'll definetely do another one sometime. @sigismund himself: If you want this to be in the librarium, I'll need some tips on how to get this up there. Should I just copy and paste it into a librarium article or what? Maybe you could send me a PM about it. @shortsonfire79: of course you can steal it, sharing is my mood XD Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151982-modelling-easy-dreadnought-tutorials-pic-heavy/#findComment-1770439 Share on other sites

wisdom like silence
If you wouldn't mind my asking, what's the cylindrical bit you are putting below the Terminator torso for the MkIV conversion? Vassakov
Consider this stolen for my Ironclad - though I will probably end up using a different hammer due to bits failure! badger nine
THANK YOU! commander alexander
:( THat just blows me and my tutorial away. That is absolutely stunning. I have a lot to lurn. thats one of the best dread conversions ive ever seen. great job. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151982-modelling-easy-dreadnought-tutorials-pic-heavy/#findComment-1773761 Share on other sites
cathar the great
If you wouldn't mind my asking, what's the cylindrical bit you are putting below the Terminator torso for the MkIV conversion? It's half of a landspeeder searchlight. If you look closely, the tutorial example dread has one half of the light, while the finished one has the front part. But you can really use ANY bit you find that fits. @vassakov: thanks. My hammer actually came to being by randomly trying out bits until I liked what I had. Just be creative! @badger nine: don't say that too loud, forge world just might sue me lol @commander alexander: since I started with the hobby, all I did was converting. I have about 1000-1500 points of space marines painted, but with all the stuff I have built/converted I'd probably have about 5000 of both space marines and chaos... And I am not a very good converter. I have never used plasticard before and all I can do with green stuff are capes and blobby stuff Oo You just have to practise I guess, and a big bitz box doesn't hurt of course ^^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151982-modelling-easy-dreadnought-tutorials-pic-heavy/#findComment-1774211 Share on other sites
commander alexander
Cool. Heres were i took your ideas( i still need a new dread though ;) ) http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/caj007/2008_1116modelswarhammer0009.jpg this is my sarcophagaus http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/caj007/2008_1116modelswarhammer0008-1.jpg this is the top of the hammer. later i will mount it on a dowel rod http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/caj007/2008_1116modelswarhammer0007-1.jpg http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/caj007/2008_1116modelswarhammer0006-1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151982-modelling-easy-dreadnought-tutorials-pic-heavy/#findComment-1774920 Share on other sites
cathar the great
Although I am having a hard time figuring out what it is made of and how large it is, the hammer looks nive! Be sure to post pictures once you assemble it all on a dread. commander alexander
From top to bottom. the hammer head is made out of an iron halo and eagle head from a commander sprue. the middle and main piece is a lascannon from a land raider(the barrel cut just where it connects to the rest). were the barrel was is another searchlight. the sides are made from landspeeder tornado launchers with wings from a DA sprue. All the inspiration is from you cathar, thanks. ;) And yes i will try to get pictures up, but money is tight and even tighter with a students budget, so it will be awhile before i can get a new dread. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/151982-modelling-easy-dreadnought-tutorials-pic-heavy/#findComment-1775976 Share on other sites
