Never Guess What I Have!

So are you just going to disreguard Starks333? I'm sure it means something coming from him, but from someone else with poor paintmanship, don't bother. =-D People like me.

Personally, after an eye opener by Starks, I'd like to agree. But before Starks (B.S) I thought it looked swell, except the flag. (perhaps stripping? Simple green works well with metals)

Looking good anyways. A great project

Thanks for all the C&C so far guys.... even tho the convo did run into - 'why are they putting up a flag?' for a little too long.

@ Stark333 - why slop paint on a limited edition, why rush it? - Simple answer Because its mine;) lol I dont claim to be an amazing painter,(i'm still learning all but the basics) I've see your work beofre on here and its up there near the top, I am trying somthing new on this model but if you dont like it instead of just telling me, how about a few pointers?

for anyone who wants to know how i've got on since my last post, I've not done that much, I've re-painted the base, Added silver trim to the Ultra marine shoulder pads and just started work on the flag, I will post a pic either tonight or Saturday.

i dont know your age, thats what the internet is like, so i am not gonna make assumptions one way or the other

but if you actually want to improve at painting, you need to ask yourself a lot of questions...not rush(painting and improving at it requires time, and to remember painting itself is not painting for gaming, aka slap paint on, washes and done)

the main thing is, dont rush, and when you do stop yourself

next is cleanliness, cleaner paint jobs look nicer without even applying anything "advanced"

then start trying to learn to blend, its very simple and basic in its beginner form....you thin your paint down until tis quite transparent, and paint over the "joint lines" or wherever two colours meet, this is more simple and more suitable for quicker TT models, instead of successive washes(painting with only transparent layers)...you can increase the transparency as you improve

but blending requires you to know where to highlight/shadow, which requires you to study a bit of stuff in front of you, you can also search-fu my basic tutorial stuff in the tut section, it has some things that might help get started

advancing painting does take time and effort yes...but the better you get the easier things become, and the faster you can paint, and the better your "low end" paint jobs get

i cant give you a specific place to start because its up to you to decide....i only chose to post because im tired of reading "AWESOME WORK" when the work is not awesome, it gives a false sense fo reality and usually prevents people from actually getting better (this is also why im aganist small painting competitions that hand out "golds")

Alex

with the flag, the paint kind of looks cool when its wet but think about how itl finish. im not the best painter trust me but maybe you should re-paint it.

stark333 you were a little harsh there. but the "pointers " you put up were very true.

Let's all flock to starks like lemmings! I agree that you need to take more time, and people who post with 'NOW PAINT IT!!!' when the model is intended as a display piece are silly if you ask me, but Starks was a little harsh there. I would just stick to one piece of it for like an hour and see what you get. I painted a space marines foot gold for an hour, and it was the best gold I'd ever done... now I can do that same gold in ten minutes. Don't try to paint everything in order. If you lack on time choose one part, like a head, to work on and do that, then next time move onto another part, you'll be surprised by the results of concentrating on the details instead of the piece as a whole, as it really helps you get it done without basecoating for half an hour strait, which in my opinion is totally enough to sap ones painting skills. This has worked for me before, at least.

Cheers :o

Hey, everyone... I just got back in and thought I would post a picture - painted before I read any of these new comments.

@Stark - Thanks for the pointers hopefully I didnt come off sounding silly in my earlier post (It was before 6am - I had just woke up)

Thinking about what you said, the things I paint well are faces and flesh (I've spent more time on them), I've always found them eaiser to do then armour and robes. but as the saying goes pratice makes perfectand im sure the more time I spend painting now the better I wil get (paint slowly and do one bit at a time) most of my marines were painted 5 at a time to get them to the table.

well here is the flag so far.... I know the eagle neds a lot of doing - Its just had its first coat of yellow, I touched the top corner with green! and the letters on the back were missing parts off them, so they aint so good,

So now the flag is still VERY WIP :HQ:

P.S.

There was a little method in my madness - the wash was ment to hopefully act as a guide for the darker areas on the eagle which is amazingly flat compared to the wrigly flag.

Wow since you got an instant reply, I havent got into bed yet so I can answer.

I just did the bog standard Skull White then a big fat heavy heap of Yellow in one coat, lol

Its not going to be that bright when its finished. hopefully i can darken it and add real shading to the 'folds' you can see on the flag where the shading is neded.

Cool, I've never really mastered yellow, I want to, just never get it quite right. If you want to tone it down, you could try using Tau sept ochre from the foundation range, I know it looks a bit orangey, but if you water it sown enough it might just help you out.

It looks like you're making steady progress, although you should take care on display pieces. Take time on it and use it to do something that you wouldn't normally do. This looks a little rushed, as the front of the flag and the back are 2 different shades. It looks like its going to turn out to be a piece that looks quite good when looked at from, say, the distance between you abd a gaming table, but up close you notice all the little mistakes.

This is not to have a go, but simply advice, from a fellow improving painter.
