Counters to the 3 Vindicator Lists

Running through some of the army lists being made recently and over and over again I'm seeing 3 Vindicators in the Heavy section.

Typically the plan is to flank them with Rhinos and rush them up the middle, often with some variety of counter assault troops behind them.

We can do it and so can Loyalists so if you head to a tournament I'm expecting to see quite a few Demolisher Cannons pointed at me.

 

So whats our best counter(s) to these armies?

1) Sitting in cover will help negate that AP2.

2) AV11 on the side is vunerable to most of our weapons, but most players will screen them with Rhinos or Razorbacks

3) AV13 front armor and short range means we should get a few turns of pounding them with missiles and LasCannons but AV13 isn't a total push over.

4) You could assault it, AV10 and Krak Grenades or Power Fist work just fine. However that means you're getting awful close to the thing

5) Fast Moving Melta squads, Raptors or Bikers can work or suicide Terminators, but those squads tend to be around the same point value.

 

What else do we have?

Obliterators. 75 points a model, various nasty weapons, deepstrike.

 

Flying Daemon Princes. Immune to instant death so you can charge into a vindicator's front with impunity. 2D6+6 vs AV10. Dead Vindi.

Forcing your opponent to then deal with the DP mucks his carefully constucted line up and takes firepower away from your army.

 

Attack on a flank so he can't bring all his firepower to bear.

Small suicide raptors with double meltas and a naked champ to summon a greater daemon. both units are amazing at killing vehicle and once you take out the first vindicator or 2 your opponent will be forced to focus a lot of points to take them down that could have been used to fire at the rest of your army. two man deepstriking obliterators and uicide termie are also good at taking then out. And don't forget the good old daemon prince or Khârn.

 

Bikes with meltas or a pfist champ. And suicide lascannon dreads that are deployed way to the front to pick off the vindicators and they can possibly use fire frenzy to your advantage and get two twinlinked lascannon shots off at a vindicator. Though you might want to keep a naked rhino right beside the dread at times to protect your own units from fire frenzy.

If you're going to run a suicide dread why not take the multimelta, it's cheaper. As the dread can move 6" and fire you'll get the bonus penetration dice on any tank up to 18" away. You'll need to be cleverer to make it work, using cover to protect it as it advances, but if it dies (and it's a suicide dread after all) it's only 100 points gone.
