Help with Objectives!

Hello Brothers!

In an objective based game I was wondering how you guys go about claiming your objectives. Do you keep the GH back to hold objectives and the BC to go out and capture them? I'm just curious seeing as my last army was imperial guard, and they have a lot of troops to get objectives with. Now that i made the change to space wolves I find it rather hard to adjust lol :( . Any feedback would be great!

Thanks,

West

From what I understand you should use your Blood Claws as, obviously, the assault force to wrest the objectives from the enemy and bring up your Grey Hunters to hold them and provide fire support for the assaulting units. Of course, that assumes you HAVE Blood Claws...others use pretty much only Grey Hunters so you need to determine which is your "cature" force and which is your "hold" force.

Either way as Space Marine (and in this case Space Wolves) you are going to have a bit tougher time in holding more than one or two objectives as Space Marines are not known for their numbers as the IG, Orks, 'Nids are. That is the fun of Wolves though, winning against all odds =D

I tend to take objectives based missions as they come, based on position of objectives, relative deployment and potential reserves for either side, fire lanes, threats and time.

Often I will attack all the objectives (or 4 if there are 5) but because of the mechanised nature of my army I can redeploy very quickly to catch my foe off balance.

Best example of this was against a CSM player when I went with one GH pack to one flank objective, ignored the central one and pushed the BC's in a LRC and a big pack of Grey Hunters to the far right objective. He sent 10 Possessed to deal with the 6 GH and their Razorback, ignored the right objective and put 10 CSM on the central one with Zerkers and a Lord in a Raider in support. I suddenly redeployed the Razor GH pack and the BC's to the attack the CSM's, blocked the Zerkers with the Crusader and used my scouts to tie up his DG and Spawn and took the central objective and left one. He had no units able to respond in his turn, and in mine I mopped up. He conceded at that point.

Capture force- Terminators, via drop pod, on there head.

Hold force- Grey Hunters w/Bolters+Plasma rifle, via rhino.

Atleast in a perfect world... *sighs*.

Usually I claim and hold my objectives with the same forces. With three objectives on a table, and four troops to my name I take my hardest hitting units and put them behind my toughest units and send them at the most heavily defended areas. Example: 10 GH w/ BP+CCW, 2xP.Weapon, Meltagun following a unit of BC's towards an ork horde. Shooty hunters take the nearby objective, other shooty hunters take the middle objective. Tanks, bikes, and artillery support the middle and opposing objectives, nothing usually gets to mine... if it does, Ill take support from the strong of the two forces *usually* to compensate.

Of course, alot of guys around here will only play cleanse *sighs*

Heres something else to note: IG, Orks, Nids... they have numbers sure... who cares?

Seriously.... with the best save there being a 4+, and orks only getting one unit of those at most what does it matter? Horder armys get alot of bodies because they die quickly. So oblige them... kill them quickly. They key to winning against a horde in 40k is to concentrate firepower on a unit tell its gone and then move on to the next. Gaunts and stealers dont get saves, most orks wont get saves, 4/5 imperial gaurd players wont get saves. Kill every trooper on the board- done.

Horde killing is one of the things the marines do best. We have lots and lots of mid level shots. Outside of plasma the only weaponry we have that isnt designed to kill hordes are antitank guns.

in a 1850 list i try to field 4 10 strong Grey Hunters, leaving 1 on the objective in my zone.

2 advance towards enemy objectives, with 1 trailing bewteen them ready to go either way to reinforce.

this way i (in theory) hold mine, and contest as many of the others if i cant take them. i deploy my GHs around each foriegn objective in a 3 in perimeter, thus not allowing enemy infantry to get within 3in unless they wipe out my squad. if assaulted, i will use the masscre move and then my movement phase to get back in the circle, or if numbers dont allow a circle, a line facing the enemy.

Hmm interesting

In my 750 list i only have 3 scoring units, and my regular opponnent is a demonhunter player :P. I usally lose my games because I would reduce a grey knight squad to only one man. And the closet unit to assault them would be holding an objective so without thinking i would charge the lil grey knight and destroy him and end up losing because instead of assaulting i should have been holding objectives, Damned bloodlust lol, Where do you guys stand on Rhinos and LandraidersÉ do you think they are worth the points so one of your squads can be speedy and protected so they can seize that one objective when it comes down to the wire

i havent used a LR in the new edition, i always err on the side of more GH...

rhinos on the other hand i love, the best part being is that they can either race a unit towards a objective or go bumper to bumper and give you a wall of advance behind...

For home objectives (ones within my deployment zone) I have been running a WGBL in TDA with CML that joines a 10 man BC unit. After they take the objective which I will put in cover if available. I just wait for them to come to me to get the CA and fire at anything within 48" of the WG. If I get hit with anything I have the BC soak up the hits keeping my CML in action as long as possible. If I get two objectives I place them 12" apart and spread my BCs in a congo line between the two and walk my WG up and down the line to keep him in sight of any targets.

For outside objectives I rely on my fasts and range units to soften my targets while I advance/run my decked out 10 man GH unit with my Rune Priest casting cover. They then in return provide cover for the following 10 man GH squad and WGBL. I march these two squads toward the closest objectives taking on anything that gets close. For some reason all eyes are focused on those two units doing a forced march which usually allows my RB to slip in and unload 6 GHs to grab/contest a different objective on the 5th turn.

Have I told you I hate Vindicators,< first target for my WGBL w/ CML, LC pred and MM attack bikes.

Well with my recent list I've been bashing the objectives (or surrounding area) with vindicators, then promptly drop in (or ride in) grey hunters to hold the objectives.

I find that BC's aren't as reliable, all it takes is for your opponent to force an assault and you could charge right off the objective (remember 3") at the last turn or something, not a pretty sight. Having the GH's there, they not only are stronger in all respects to BC's, but they're reliable, you know they'll stay on that spot unless YOU want them to move, and if the enemy does assault, well it's a cold day in hell for them.

-edit-

@Logain

When you say help hold enemy objectives, you mean contest correct? because the only thing in 5th that can HOLD and objective is a troop choice (granted they're not a swarm or any other special rule). ;)

My Grey Hunters will hold close positions and I usually walk across the board with my terminators and Rune Priest making cover with storm caller. Wolf Scouts can also help to hold enemy objectives.

Logain, I may not understand fully, but Rune Priest in this situation does very little as the terminators already receive a 5+ invol save, only bene here would be if your using SC to give I-10. Your Priest is better off leading a pack of GH with BPs and PWs or large number of BCs. For great fun, put him on a bike, that way your BC/GH can run and he can still cast storm.
