Haha its not THAT bad of an idea so don't worry. The issue that people have is people (myself included) tend to sit and shoot that single Heavy weapon to the exclusion of the rest of the weapons in the squad. Because Chaos does not have the easy fix of Combat Squads where you can split your unit into fire support and movement, we fix it by making the whole squad "mobile" with 2 Special Weapons.

A Heavy Weapon can be useful, especially because it has +50%-100% the range of the longest Special Weapon so it can increase the threat range of the unit considerably. The key will be thinking of the Heavy Weapon as an extra to the squad, not the element that defines the squad. In many ways its the same idea as taking a Power Fist, a "what if I need it" choice.

Having said that, I keep my Heavies on armor or Havocks. My personal compromise is the Havoc Launcher on Rhinos, as I mentioned before it serves as a mobile Heavy Bolter Equivalent giving me that extra range.

I have two squads both 10 man: Both have A.Champs with power fist and plasma pistol

One squad has a heavy bolter and flamer, the other has a plasma and melta gun so that both can hold their own at both range and assault. Works fine for me though flamers are template and I'm not a fan, I only equiped one with a flamer for flexibility and diversity really. But up to you and what role you want your marines in, mine serve as a kinda Havoc role so I've given them Rhino's for cover, extra firepower and mobility. Good for retreating or rushing in.

An idiot thou art, King Tiger, thou deservest not to play 40k for thou hast taken a heavy weapon in thine Chaos Squad!

haha, sorry, just had to jump at that one
