Inquisitorial Authority

Although one should note taht just because one has said symbol doesn't mean that htey have inquisitorial authority. The Sisters wear =][= symbolry occasionally as well, but it is merely a representation of their covenant with the =][= rather than because of =][= authority. Most of the work the Sisters do has nothing to do with the =][= (and indeed, the Sisters, being a highly unsubtle force, are generally unsuitable for the needs of an Inquisitor).

However, I highly suspect that the Grey Knights are allowed a sense of autonomy in their actions similar to what the standard Space Marines receive.

I think the case is like this. The GKs are under the control of the Inquisition, so that they may be reined in when necessary. But, since they are incorruptible, they never need to be reined in. Therefore to all intents as purposes they are autonomous.

This, I think, allows them a very interesting opportunity - as a part of the Inquisition with autonomous authority, would they not be able to exert Inquisitional authority? Granted, the orders of a full Inquisitor would obviously eclipse the desires of the Grey Knights... but this limited form of Inquisitional authority would make a lot of sense when placed within the context of the fluff, as it would easily explain their ability to commandeer large contingents of the Imperial Guard, for instance, without necessarily being accompanied by an Inquisitor.

The GKs defer to the Inquisitor 1) because its the Inquisitor who holds official authority and 2) very few know of the existence of the GKs. Granted, those who do know aren't going to ever refuse a GK (incorruptible, see ;) ). Quite simply, the GKs hold the largest concentration of unofficial power in the Imperium - its based on respect. Officially they have no power to speak for the Inquisition. You require an Inquisitorial rosette. In practice that rule is completely thrown out the window, not least for practical reasons. Basically the GKs can be trusted to overstep the boundaries of their official power for the good of the Imperium. No Inquisitor would find themselves in a situation where they would have to reject a GKs decision. Unless they were a Radical. Even then the GK would be right anyway.

Yup, you need an Inquisitorial Rosette, which whilst it may look like almost anything, can be verified by the Ordo coding encrypted within the Rosette. That coding is what you need to be granted Inquisitorial authority.
