Does deployment set off Cluster Mines.

Just a side-topic of the Scout Bikes thread in the Tactica forum.

The way I read the descriptionof Cluster Mines, when you have Scout Bikers in your army, you select one piece of terrain per squad you have (combat squads only count as one squad.)

You then write it down secretly.

Then, when a unit (friend or foe!) enters that terrain, the mines explode.

The sticking point is wether deploying in the terrain causes the mines to trip. I am of the mindset that they do. The unit has entered the terrain by deploying or infiltrating there. The mines are placed before any deployment is done on either side. So, mines are present during the deployment phase, yes?

I don't have the exact quote with me at work, so I cannot judge based on RAW. I guess the main argument is wether deployment is "moving" into terrain.

Care to discuss?

It says they go off when a unit moves into the trapped peice of area terrain.

I think you would be hard pressed to say that deploying counts as movement. Though it'd make sense from a 'common sense' perspective.

The next question would be, do they go off if a unit leaves the peice of terrain? I would say no as they are moving out of, not into.

Overall these cluster mines are a pain as there are alot of things that can go on that they didn't address.

Previous editions had mines...

We always ruled that movement in a mine field set them off, coming or going.

I would expect that deploying into a minefield would cause the same effect, as if you moved into it before the start of the game (since the mines are sown before the battle). The target unit would not be hit again unless a figure was moved within that terrain piece.

The mines are a one use item; they go bang and there's none left.

It does clearly say if someone moves through ( or into? ) the terrain, so deployment would not set them off as it isn't part of a game turn, and when it is the game turn, noone is moving.

But as soon as they wiggle a cheek, they wear it! :D

RoV

it CLEARLY states "cluster mines are triggered the first time a unit moves into the booby-trapped terrain." P67 C:SM

so deployment within, and movement through or out of are not sufficient to satisfy the triggering criteria. house rule away, wait for an FAQ if you like, but this is the way it's written. It's clear, though it might seem odd.
