Vulkan He'stan.. Charltons' big brother

Yes another one!

Let me set the scene. He's not technically mine. With the new Codex SM my son is revamping his Ultramarines and splitting his decent sized force to go green. He's always like the Salamanders and with the advent of the new Codex he's gone green. I'm not normally a loyalist player myself but I'm contributing a few units to this army and reading about old Vulk in the codex I just had to make him. I see I'm not alone, but conversions to date seem to have been centred around Grey Knight like, I wanted to use the artwork as a guideline and built my own hence voila ....

Couple of things have changed since I took the photo but the basis of the model is he's an SM captain so he's going to be big so I looked for parts. Nothing in the SM range really took my fancy for armour until I was looking at my (soon to be) Exorcist SM Techmarine. The armour is big , what I want for my Capt, its also segmented and angular and fits in quite nicely with the look I wanted. Found a bareheaded Techmarine on Ebay for £5 (yeah I know) and proceeded to Dremel out the head.

Checking the artwork and forums I noticed a few people have gone for the Knight look helm. But Looking at the artwork carefully it looks like the helm is actually a mk IV helmet. So rooting around the bits box I came across a plastic mkIV helm which IIRc is from the Black Templar sprues. But this looked a bit big so I noticed the FW Red Scorpion bits and as I was placing an bits order with http://battlewagonbits.co.uk/ I order a couple and torso (well I'll use them with my IW as well) the resin helm is smaller but looks so much sharper than the plastic equivalent.

The pose, well not much I could do here really, but making us a scenic base for him - yes the base is sculpted not a bought resin item, I've added some small bits for the basing kit. I thought a purposeful pose of Vulkan striding across the battlefield surveying his forces at work. Sally icon is from I believe a Mordheim sprue and perfectly covers the AM icon. What to do with the myriad of pipes on the Techmarine, we'll I've GS'd a dragon style loincloth over the top, the pipes are still visible, his cape though hides them at the rear and with some Dremelling to remove those on the left leg I've got the look I wanted.

More to come....

philbrad been a while since I seen you on these fourm

With your son collecting Salamander force one idea is the Corsier from the Dark Elf, there clock really work well with the Space Marines.

The conversion you posted look really cool & like you said it near the art work, is it possible to get photos from all side to see diffrent part you use?. Be cool to see the model once he is all fully painted up. But rememeber to stay faithful to your IW :( (been a while since seen any IW model from you as well)

IP

Thanks for the comment ... alpha Legion I hadn't thought of that one!

@IP - There's more photo's to come don't you worry. I'm still contemplating a few changes for him but we'll see. Like I say... more to come. My IW, well I did get some additional units done for the EoT campaign weekend at Lenton in September, my possessed and Slaaneshi Sorcerer also got my command Land Raider too. I'll get some pics posted. I was planning to chronicle the army revision but simply didn't have time it was get the models done or blog not both ...

Right update time

The mark 1 'Spear of Vulkan' actually wasn't Vulk's it was built for a Leonidas Blood Angel conversion I did a few years back, heavily influenced on 300 and based on the Dante model. The head is from the tip and top haft are from an old skellies spear the lower mid piece is from a Kroot rifle. But like I say it is/was temporary. The arm is from an SM biker cut at the elbow and wrist and repositioned a standard SM shoulderpad might seem a bit plain but with the Lizardman/Salamander trophy head it seemed right.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/philbrad/Warseer/models/vulkan3.jpg

The back .. well not much to say really, cape is plastic and from (I think) the Chaos Warriors, I've actually reversed it and added the GS scales. I've now gone for a look for the cloak something more akin to a pelt so the skin is low on the back with fixings on the shoulder pads, the plastic under cloak is made pieces with GS to fill the joints. Backpack, well I was thinking of a banner to make Vulk stand out but decided on a beefed up backpack to reflect the Salamanders iconography, The backpack is standard with two deamon heads from the Chaos vehicle sprue.

The left side, my version of the 'Gauntlet of the Forge' differs from the artwork, I've not gone for the GK gauntlet look or the converted power fist. instead I wanted to do something a bit more ..well .. Salamandery. The arm is the very old plastic SM 'tea tray' arm (used on the bolter marines looked like the marine was carrying a tea tray) its been chopped and the wrist and elbow to provide the basis of the arm. However I've trimmed the fingers back and GS'd the hand so the fingers are curled into fist. The nozzle is the old hand flamer the surround another trimmed Chaos vehicle deamon head the rest of the gauntlet is GS. Not figured the feed for this I'm divided between hose round to a tank on the backpack or a smaller tank for the current flamer attached to the gauntlet. The Deamon head does sit a little high so pipe feed from this might be the way forward. Let me know what you think? And of course the left shoulder pad, from the Chaos SM sprue, the corner trim points have been carved out.

The mark 2 'Spear of Vulkan' well its a bit different and more like the artwork. But that's for another day. It's also bought up the possibility of some changes to the Gauntlet, anyway enjoy.

So todays little update ...

Like I said the old spear was really a stand in just to get some scale on the model. This is the real deal, the original has contributed some bits though the main part of the weapon is (as you can tell) from a Terminator Thunderhammer . The hammer is removed as is the haft pommel. I've extended the haft using the Kroot rifle part from the original spear. This thing was a Primarch weapon so I've made it big. I couldn't find a GW blade big enough for the job so I made my own its a lot thinner and more realistic looking that the metal ones, the top looks a bit bare so I added the power unit from a plastic chainsword to 'tech' it up and a pipe I found, I was thinking of another Chaos Daemon head on the top of the spear but with the shoulder pad head and the backpack this would be a bit too much IMO. I added a spike from my spares box and voila, I'm quite pleased with the result the power cable for the Termi arm has been retained and tucks nicely behind the cloak out of the way.

I've removed the flamer arm for painting and I'm contemplating doing another one based on a Termi forearm and possibly a flamer closer to the artwork. Well the black undercoat is drying and we'll be ready for the first green armour coats a bit later on.

ONWARDS!

OK painty time. When we left Mr He'Stan yesterday the black base coat was drying. Yesterday evening I started applying some colour.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/philbrad/Warseer/models/vulkan6.jpg

First coats

ARMOUR - Orkhide or matt Dark Angel green as I call it. Good solid base colour applied to the armour plates. You'll see I've removed the flamer arm, mainly to get the black undercoat into all the nooks and crannys. the GS/plastic cloak is also quite flexible so it peels back slightly allowing you to get the the model underneath. After the Orkhide I've done a coat of 50/50 mix Orkhide and Snot Green. He's then been washed with Thraka green and a thin wash of Badab black. This should have all the 'lowlights' done ready to get some more detail on him. Done the shoulder pad as per the old Legion colours (green inner pad) want to see how this looks with the armour and helm it gives him a far older look that the regular mk 7 armour types.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/philbrad/Warseer/models/vulkan7.jpg

BACKPACK

As per the armour, metallic bits boltgun with badbab black wash, Daemon heads will be gold, basecoated brazen brass a few coats of shining gold should sort them out. Even though an officer and a character I dont want too much 'bling' on Vulk

CAPE

I'm thinking of doing the scales a purple to green graduation, green scales simply merge with the armour andh e ends up looking like another 'green marine' just used Orkhide to basecoat them again. Probably work from the outside to centre green to purple. Thinking of some raised spines on the cape also bit like Chappy Xavier's cloak only a bit more prominent.

BASE

Just done this with scorched brown currently going for a mud look. Don't want to over complicate the base as Vulk is the thing on display.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/philbrad/Warseer/models/vulkan8.jpg

LOINCLOTH

Front is scorched brown with a gryphonne serpia wash not sure what to do with the scales on this one. Do need to tidy the purity seals and chest icon don't look half as ragged in real life. The golden yellow helm lenses could do with some tidying also.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/philbrad/Warseer/models/vulkan9.jpg

SHOULDPAD

Again didn't want to go down the route of green marine with green lizard on him. Done the trophy head with thinned scorched brown base over black, picked the teeth with deneb stone. Might do the scales a browny/red, crest is charadon granite base with deneb stone on the top and a devlan mud wash. I'll be adding deneb stone and bleached bone stripes into the bone crest and horns.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/philbrad/Warseer/models/vulkan10.jpg

SPEAR OF VULKAN

Arm, as per the rest of the armour. Spear itself drybrushed the black over with some codex grey, I'll be washing this with several coats of black wash, the grip I've done brazen brass with a gryphonne serpia wash I'll be blinging this up to shining gold. Probably do some colour of the power feed pipes. Blade has been undercoated grey and the first of numerous thinned white coats is going on. The blade will be white as per the fluff, perhaps with a few very pale yellow tinges at the tips of the support ridges. The white will be lots of thin coats to build up an even colour.

WHAT NEXT

Well I'll look at fabricating an new flamer arm today might get some painting done tonight.

very nice conversion there and iam loving the new spear,i also think the old spear was very impressive in its simplicity biggrin.gif

Thank you. The mk 1 spear will reappear, probably on my Blood Angel successor Captain based on Leonidas, or I have been thinking of a Iron Snakes SM for my Deathwatch contingency.

ONWARDS!!!

PhilB

ALOT of detail, but well proportioned. He looks really good so far. I actually like the power spear/javelin a little better, because of its uniqueness. You don't see that at all and the one you developed looked awesome. And it could easily be associated as a sallie tail tip.

Looks great so far.
