Iolair - a RT army rebuilt

Greetings Battle-Brothers

Here we have Legionus Iolir - Legion of Eagles in pidgin latin/gaelic

I started playing 40 about 20yrs ago - shortly before working for GW. This gave me the opportunity to build a couple of pretty big armies (Iolair, Wolves, loads of IG and a pretty big WFB army too) Since GW & I parted company around 92, my figs have lain in cases - either under the bed or in the shed. The vast majority of the figures are metal - aside from the RTB01's. The rules & army lists have been rewritten & revamped plenty of times since I last played so I've had to mothball a few goodies ~ Captain on a powerboard, RTB01's, 3 librarians and my chaplain's jetbike :teehee:

As a purebred Scot (I only left the homeland 18yrs ago) I decided very early on to add a Scottish taste to my marines. I'm not using my own tartan (too red tbh) but have adopted a Black Watch style plaid - green & black. After the '45, the English government outlawed the wearing of tartan. In the following years they introduced the Black Watch tartan aka Miltary Tartan #1. Today, each battalion of Royal Regt of Scotland (RRS) wears a variation of Military Tartan #1

Tartan is kept to a minumum in Iolair as it would get caught in the armour. When it is worn, its either as a fly plaid (over the shoulder) or a loincloth

Chainswords replace claymores, combat shields replace targes - both effective in a modern 'highland charge'

The chapter crest is my clan crest - Drummond of Perth

so, here we go.

First off, the colour scheme (nb helmet colours likely to change - asst to black)

Command

Honour Guard (3 of 5)

"back in the day" my regular opponent/customer was an orcy player. As a result, the Iolairs became adept orc slayers. Some of the Honour Guard carry shields covered in gargant hide

Termies

I've had to mothball the two 10 man metal squads as the new army lists don't allow them

Two tac squads of RTB01's have also been mothballed

Dev squad

There's about 10 plastic devs who haven't been assigned yet

Bikes

Asst Sqd - Sgian Dubh (the Dark Knives) 5 of 10

These are the 5 metal figs (with classic jump packs) that are gonna team up with the 5 plastic asst dudes

Tac 1

Tac 2

Dreads

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w78/SawneyBean/WH40k/P8210185.jpg

yup, thats a Contemptor Class dread (referred to by Imperial troops as 'chuck' Class) Under RT rules it was armed with twin bolters per hand, a jump pack & a shield generator :P

EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE TERMIES & THE DREADS ARE PATIENTLY WAITING FOR A REPAINT

There's a couple of old rhino's, preds & a land raider too. And scouts. And chapter masters. And THE chapter master. And an original metal speeder

You don't want to know how many metal IG there are <_<

And under 5th edition?

A couple of my chucks have ended up with old lascannon sponsons from the old landraider just to make them legal in current editions. Bring back jump packs on dreadnaughts I say.

I hate to say, a good half of the stuff there is second edition.

Tac squad two, largely space marine strike force?

Tac squad 2 is all metal. May well be 2nd Ed - I left GW in mid-late 92. AlL I know is I used my staff discount

As for Chucky, like most of my army, he's useless under anything after 2nd Ed ;) Don't even get me started on the IG army thats in cases - 30+ Rough Riders, Penal Squads, Beastmen, human bombs....

Suck it up buttercup!

I've seen older piles of random models, like the one in my miniature case and I wasn't staff. Painted models count. I got a squad of the midget ork bikes, I got the apothacary on old SM bike sitting in a blister somewhere and of course Imperial Guard on jet bike...

Mid 80s stuff is rarer than early 90's. GW grew fast in the 90's. I swear 2nd Edition came out in 94-95 which should have been after you left, but things used to come out earlier in the UK than in the colonies...

Sometimes I even forget models I have too because they've been in storage. I'm going to be stripping and touching up yet more old models once I finally get the last of the Diseased Sons done.

So many plans, so little energy.
