The Company Of Shadow

My first topic here in the WiP forum.

I used to play an Emperor's Children force but since the new Codex ever so slightly changed the Chaos Space Marine army I've decided not to do a dedicated Slaaneshi force - its just not worth it any more. To that end I decided to go for an Undivided one, but couldn't decide how to paint them. That was until I came across a bit of colour text in the Chaos codex about a Chapter called the Death Falcons, who basically disappeared on the Hive World of Bastonbeil hunting something which ate souls and then returned as the Company of Shadow - 'Space Marines with grey armour that writhed with the faces of the damned'.

Now my newest colour scheme utilises grey and I was trying to think how to fit Undivided troops into it, originally I was going to quarter them with white, but now they'll be painted entirely in grey, with screaming face detail done following this tutorial. So my dedicated troopers will have the appropriate colour switched in to represent their Gods. Simple.

I'm also thinking that I'd quite like to use the Chaos Space Marine special characters, and why not? So I'm going to convert me some 'Counts As' characters and change the names. Ergo 'Abaddon' becomes 'Shadow Lord Apollyon' - Apollyon being the Greek name for Abaddon. Geddit?

I was talking to my friend Markus the other night and he was wanting something to draw, and I suggested he do Apollyon and lo and behold, I have my own artwork for my Chaos Space Marine Lord. How cool is that?

Well then I've done my first few attempts at sculpting faces onto the armour of my Chaos Space Marines. Its the first time I've done anything with g/s other than to fill in gaps and so I was expecting them to look like crap. I was actually suprised how easy this effect is to achieve, although making faces not look comical can be a challenge at times.

I started off doing the shoulder pad with arm attached, and finished off on the leg, which is unfinished, and I think it shows as they get better as you go through. I'm going to experiment with using different tools until I get something that works well and is easy to work with. So far I've used my g/s tool and knife, next up is a cocktail stick and a pin. Results will be shown on here as they happen.

Anyway, let me know what you think and if you've any pointers for working with g/s, other than mixing it so that there's no yellow left standing up out of the mix... ;)

Interesting idea, I've used the same idea with my WIP Chaos Lord whose sposed to be possessed. But I found that the faces come out better if you lace a thin layer of GS ontop of the surface your going to sculpt. Then just pull away with your tool.

I'll keep watching this one.

Any chance I could be allowed to colour that art? :P I might want to give it a go.

Sure, drop me a PM with your e-mail addy in it and I'll send a bigger version of it over to you.

I've got loads of Uni work to be getting on with over the next fortnight but I plan on doing loads to these guys over the Christmas break, so expect updates in just over a fortnight.
