Vanguard - Conversion and painting

I'm probably going to disapoint you now...

you've come here, expecting to see some marvelously half done model and instead found... not much.

I'm still in the planning phase, you see, and i'm looking for some input and advice on colour schemes and painting advice.

the aim for this model is:

1. try the following techniques: NMM, a smooth transition between two colours (ie blending white to blue),

2. paint the best model i have ever painted in my rather short painting career

3. maybe enter it into local GD next year, if only to see if it gets through the first round... which it probably won't.

4. have a bad ass display model.

the model in question is:

and playing around in photoshop i came up with a couple of schemes using the colours i want to use (which are black, white and hawk turquoise). none of these are quite what i want, but just show what the colours look like on the models.

and a combination of the two:

and i did a green one, just for kicks.

Anyway, there is a point to this thread, which is to get some of you mad painters out there to give me some advice, and to document how i'm going. etc.

So i would REALLY REALLY like some feedback on how to do this model, at the moment especially in terms of colour schemes. also, a major one:

Black or white undercoat?? this will probably depend on what scheme i choose but at the moment i'm leaning towards white.

danke, in advance.

Well basically if you want a dark colored model start with black, and light use white. The green one looks promising. Probably use a white undercoat for a better finish. What sort of effects/ style do you want? Smooth and clean, or shaded with weathering etc.

Well, while i was thinking about colour schemes i realised that i didn't like the pose of the model for a couple of reasons - one, it covered up all the chest detail and two, the sword was sort of bent, so it was actually poking the model in the face. so i got crackin and started chopping things up and generally converting to get a more open and dynamic pose. i also wanted to give the model a bigger, nastier weapon. anyway, onto the pictures:

these are just all the bits i used to get the pose i wanted - i'm still not sure about that paricular chainsword, i think i might swap it for a double sided one.

i blue-tacked it all togethor as a dry run:

so yeah, i think thats what its going to look like in the end. C&C, eh?

A double-sided chainsword would be much better, though I might also suggest using one of the Ravenwing power swords if you have access to them. They could easily pass for spear/glaives due to their shape.

...Where's the left hand from? The terminator Librarian?

While the green one does look neat, do the black one. The white parts will be the hardest, but the best suggestion I can give you is to water down your paints, because thick paint happens, and rarely does it look good. I should know. Of my roughly 400 models, about 3 are painted well..

Also, paint slowly. Let each layer fully dry first, before continuing.
