New Player- Needs advice on Space Wolves

I am a new 40k player and am trying to pick one of the SM codexes. I don't want normal marines and I have pretty much ruled out BT as there are hardly any BT supplies at my local GW and I don't like BA. So it is a decision between DA and SW, could someone please tell me about the space wolves and about they're strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks in advance :o

Strengths: CC, Our troops choices are rock hard, and our army fits together and works together well.

Weaknesses: Antitank and long range firepower. We simply have a hard time gaining access to LR weaponry as its almost entirely tank mounted.

Ill note that DA are currently having issues.... alot of them are playing the regular codex and just reflecting DA units with them.

Getting the Space Wolf Dex is no problem, go to the Canada Games Workshop website and "order" the Space Wolf Codex....they will send it free in an email.

The difficulty with using 2 dexs is the idiots who either refuse to read or can't read....it clearly states that we use the SM Codex for our weapons and vehicles profiles and whatnot. There are some issues with a certain vehicle option but other than that it it quite clear.

Getting the models yes is hard for the special stuff...however for the basics, Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Long Fangs, vehicles, etc they can be bought on GWs website or any other site that sells them. In stores there is more of an issue of them WANTING to order them rather than the actual availability of models...I can get my local store to order anything I want of those basic choices...it's the special characters that are hard to get but considering our age and the possibility of our new codex coming in in mid to late next year it is to be expected.

Look at it this way though, considering the age of our army....my personal win/loss status is 1/0/1 and thats NEVER playing W40K before...those were my first 2 games EVER (well technically no but the FIRST ever was a 3v3 that was lost but I don't count that due to it was not a personal fight)!

"...and lo! The Emperor did say 'The Wolves of Fenris shalll be my hammer. They shall be my Fury and my Ire. Fear me, mine enemies as I will set my Wolves amongst you! Oh, and the rest of you marines over there...yeah, you're support for the Space Wolves. Carry on'."

Two forces in the Imperium: the Wolves and Support.

The only thing you need to know about the wolves:

1. We hold a bolter in one hand because we're badass like that.

2. We see you charging and we throw ourselves at you because we want the glory of the charge, not you!

3. We're clinically insane.

4. We drink ale.

5. We're highly customizable with a wide range of weaponry (except heavy weaponry, as that would hinder our ability to throw ourselves at you in assault and break some jaws).

6. We don't like to wear helmets (we're not "special" like those smurfs over there).

7. We tell the inquisition to go @*($) themselves and worry about those robed guys over on their floaty rock thingy.

8. Blood for the blood god!... er I mean Logan is the more revered man in all the Imperium and the most feared by all the rest!

It should all depend on how you react to all the comments here. If your thinking, wow, these guys are awesome and the army itself sounds good to, than just go for wolves.

If you dont trust anyone here and see it as a big conspiracy to make you play wolves, than dark angels should suit you best.

As for me, i'm an Ultramarine gone wolf. First i read their codex and i went wow, these guys are sweet, and when i started reading about their fluff i kinda ordererd a 1500 army on the internet a week later.

P.S. Read Grimfoe's post. It makes sense.

Well, I already have C:SM and now have scratched out DA but am again interested in BT too. Aren't BT just as good as Spcae wolves at combat but have better guns?

That's kind of a tough one. The short answer is NO. Currently, the options available to wolves surpass those available to BT. I'm not sure that will be the case quite so clearly once the new wolf codex comes out next year.

My gut tells me that the new wolf codex will actually make the wolves better as history shows that the army with the newest codex is typically the best. After all, GW isn't producing new codices so that you'll look through them and decide NOT to buy the army. That said, the ancient codex that wolves are currently using is very good once you combine it with the new C:SM, so a nerfing of the wolves is not out of realm of possibility.

Personally, I've been a wolf player for a very long time. I hadn't played for about ten years, but when I came back to the game a few months ago, I decided to build a new wolf army. I looked at all the rest and think that wolves are still the best. (Please excuse the unintentional rhyme) I also considered BT very closely, but think they fall short in a few key areas.

Dark Angels - "Woe is us, we have some traitors we have to find. Let's pray"

Black Templars - "Praying is fun. Incense is fun. Black and White is fun. More praying is better."

Space Wolves - "Lets kill something. Now lets drink Ale. Lets shoot something. Lets drink Ale. Beards are cool. Long hair is cool. Mohawks are cool. Shaved heads are cool. Tattoo's are cool. Check out my pet wolf. I can open beer cans with my teeth. Helmets!? We don't need no stinking helmets!!"

Space Wolf Packing List:

1. Chainsword/axe/frost blade

2. Bolter

3. Ale

4. Frags

5. Kraks

7. More Ale

8. Spare Ale

9. Back-up Ale

Most wolves, stay wolves over the course of there gaming years, this tells me something about the wolves in general :D

I would agree. They have the BEST fluff around too.

If you want your marines to be mindless grunts who do as they are told play any other chapter. If, however, you want to have an army of individual warriors fighting for what they feel is right who feastand drink when they have some spare time:

GO WOLF or go home.

Fitting.

Its also a difference in music. If you like Hymns, DA or BT might be for you. If your into the Goth scene, BA. Bubble-gum pop? Ultramarines are the army for you.

Now, for Metal, you have an army like the Space Wolves. I could see them pumping Slayer or some Metallica over the speakers of Drop Pods on the way down. A little Iron Maden or Motorhead, even Dragonforce.

You guys have convinced me, I'm going for Space Wolves!

Thanks for all the comments that helped me make a decision.

P.S Part of my decision was reading that Russ beat the emperor ina drinking contest (LOL)

Actually, the Emperor won, but thats why Russ decided to follow him (oh, and taking a punch to the forehead with a power fist when the drinking failed).

ManOWar. Metal-music about Viking stuff. Couldn't be more fitting.

Think of this:

A 9 man squad of Terminators, armed with any weapon under the sun. This could even include 9 stormshields and 9 combi-plasma guns if you so desire - or one heavy weapon per 3 men. Now give them all +1 attack on the countercharge, and a one time rerollable armor save.

Now picture that squad led by in IC with BS 5 and an assault cannon. So that's an IC leading a squad of mini-ICs.

Also, you get lots of the new toys from the Marine codex, while still keeping our obscenely badass Grey Hunters, Blood Claws and the like. 15 man squad with 4 attacks each on the charge... sheer brutality.

Perfect! My buddy also found a speed metal "Death Viking" band from Sweden or Norway. Good stuff.
