El-Diablo
I did this as a favour for Commissar Molotov, hopefully someone else might find it useful. Colours needed - -Chaos Black -Skull White -Adeptus Battlegrey -Codex Grey -Fortress Grey -Badab Black -Boltgun Metal -Chainmail -Mithril Silver -Scorched Brown -Dark Flesh -Dheneb Stone -Bleached Bone -Devlan Mud -Red Gore -Blood Red -Khemri Brown -Kommando Khaki Stage 1 - Basecoat the armoured areas Adeptus Battlegrey. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage1.jpg Stage 2 - Wash the whole thing with a heavy wash of Badab Black. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage2.jpg Stage 3 - Overbrush the armour with Adeptus Battlegrey. Overbrushing is essentially drybrushing, but with a wet brush. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage3.jpg Stage 4 - Quick highlights with Codex Grey - highlight everything except the darkest areas. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage4.jpg Stage 5 - Apply fine highlights to the top edges with Fortress Grey. Basically, anything at the top of the figure - top of helmet, top of shoulder pads, toes etc. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage5.jpg Stage 6 - Glaze the whole lot with Badab Black, watered down until its virtually see through. Before painting it on, gently dab the brush on a piece of tissue (use the stuff you get for the kitchen, not toilet tissue) to take out the excess water out of the brush. If it takes more than a few seconds to dry on the figure, you've got too much watered paint on the brush. Hit the tissue again and carry on. At this stage I painted everything else Chaos Black and gave the moulded tactical arrow a coat of Fortress Grey. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage6.jpg Stage 7 - The Metal I would of done this as 4 separate pictures but metal is a pain to photograph. -Basecoat Boltgun Metal. -Highlight Chainmail. -Edge highlight Mithril Silver. -Wash with Badab Black. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage7-Metal.jpg Stage 8 - Leather -Basecoat Scorched Brown. -Layer a 60/40 mix of Scorched Brown/Dark Flesh, leaving Scorched Brown in the recesses. -Edge Highlight with thinned Dark Flesh. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage8-Leather.jpg Stage 9 - Skulls & Parchment These 2 are the same except for the base colour. 1-Basecoat the skulls with Dheneb Stone and the parchment with Bleached Bone. 2-Wash with Devlan Mud. 3-Highlight the skulls with Dheneb Stone and the parchment with Bleached Bone. 4-Add Skull White to Dheneb Stone to highlight the skulls, add Skull White to Bleached Bone to highlight the parchment. 5-Using thinned down Chaos Black, paint thin lines on the parchment to represent text. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage9-SkullsParchment.jpg Stage 10 - Lenses and Wax Seals 1-Basecoat Red Gore. 2-Layer Blood Red over the top, leaving Red Gore in the recesses. On the lenses, leave some Red Gore showing at the back. 3-Add a tiny spot of Skull White at the back of each lense for reflection points. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage10-LensesandWaxSeals.jpg Stage 11 - Black -Edge highlight the black areas with a 50/50 mix of Chaos Black/Adeptus Battlegrey. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage11-Black.jpg Stage 12 - Chapter Badge 1-Paint a circle and square with thinned Fortress Grey, then fill in. 2-Go over the grey with thinned Skull White - you'll probably need 3 or 4 thin layers to get it smooth. 3-Tidy up the shape with thinned Chaos Black and add the details - eye, nose and teeth. At this point I would paint the tactical arrow - layer with a 50/50 Fortress Grey/Skull White mix, then layer with pure Skull White, sing as many thin layers as it takes to get it smooth. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage12-ChapterBadge.jpg Stage 13 - Weathering -Water down Scorched Brown (approx 10/1 water/Scorched Brown) and glaze around panel lines, joints and anywhere else dirt would collect. -Do the same with Catachan Green, then with Bestial Brown. -Overall theres around 15 layers of colour glazed on. For more info on glazing see Lunchbox's glazing article. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/Stage13-Weathering.jpg Next, base however you feel - i've washed the sand with Brown Ink then drybrushed it with Khemri Brown then Kommando Khaki. Paint the rim Scorched Brown and add static grass to taste. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Relictors/Relictors%20Tutorial/RelictorFinal.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/154580-painting-relictors-tutorial/ Share on other sites
Commissar Molotov
Thank you for the tutorial, Midian! It's certainly appreciated. I'm glad that you've broken it down into what seem easily achievable steps - and the Chapter badge tutorial will definitely come in handy!
