Brotherhood of the Wolf

Recommended Posts

Work in progress of my turned space wolf band of chaos marines.

I've currnetly got about 2000 points worth of army and am converting a lot of things.

Will put up some pics soon of some of the models.

A few of questions,

1, what would be better, a vindicator turrert converted to look like a wolves head or just painted like one?

2, am thinking of converting the old epic eldar warlock titan to represent a slaanesh deamon prince (the slim elegent style of the model seems to suit an androginous prince). What are your thoughts on this?

3, was thinking of naming my lord ragnar thunderfist. ragnar blackmane has always been my favorite character and have just finished reading the first space wolf book. my idea is that for all the killing that ragnar does on his way to becoming a space wolf, it creates an entity in the warp of a twisted demented version of himself. Wouldn't mind feedback on this idea?

Keep well all,

Here are the first lot of pictures.

This is one of the squad of chosen. Used the dark angel vet set.

This is the closest I have ever come to finishing a model, haven't decided fully yet how to base the army

having a little trouble with the pics, did want to have them show on the page but the site says the links cant be used like that, oh well.

second lot of pics,

these are of my lord, "Ragnar Thunderfist", converted completely from scratch, using whatever bits i had.

wanted to get across the idea that he is a close combat god with 5 attacks on the charge (MoK) plus the extra 2d6 for the deamon weapon.

Bit afraid to paint him at the moment, want to make ure my painting is up to a good standard.

am tempted with this model to get lots of skulls to fill in the base.

wondering as well whether to keep him in the whole space wolf colour scheme or paint him a bit different to make him stand out.

OK so Howdy.

First, space wolves do not turn to chaos, or at least are the most resistant to it. The Canis helix ensures this, instead they turn in to wulfen ( werewolves)

All that aside, personnally I would try to turn the vindicator turret into a wolf head. That is no easy task, but I think it would look better.

Epic titan, nope. I have seen this done too many times to think well of the idea. It would look to out of place to work, in my opinion.

For a deamon prince based on ragnar, I supposse you could do that. I don't thnk it really makes any difference. A demon is a demon is a demon. Put some fur on him and go with it I guess.

The figure is also not really giving me any impression of a turn space wolf. To be honest, I would wager it was a fallen more than anything else, but that is my opinion. Also the picture is a little dark so it is really hard to see much detail.

But from what I can make out it does look very promising.

Good luck and keep at it.

Thanks for the input Gar,

I'm going on the lines of just having a warband rather than a whole massive army of them, pretty much like those that joined with Huron during his attack on the Wolf of Fenris. Am also trying to find more info on Skyrar's Dark Wolves. I know that if a space wolf becomes a wulfen then he is immune to chaos, but before this he can still be tempted.

I'll give the turrent a go, got plenty of time on my hands at the moment.

for the deamon prince i am tempted to wait for the new plastic model to come out, does look quite nice.

Originally, the chosen were going to be fallen, the fickle gods of chaos throwing together Space Wolves and Dark Angels to fight side by side, and have some silly roll that at start of turn on a 6, the two seperate parts turn at each other and fight rather than the enemy lol, but that bit is more for giggles. I am thinking though that I need to get hold of a few space wolve sprues for all the wolfie bits on them.

Just thought i would add as well, that this project is not just a work in progress in terms of painting etc, but also in terms of background and what to use, I've changed the basic army nearly every time i play with it, and have changed lots of ideas with the army being both DA and SW, or just SW and then thinking of just using semi loyalist SW that just want to fight anything, and the list goes on :-)

Been conceptualizing this for some time now, long before GW released the Squad Box of the 13th Company actually. Seen what I was making my centerpiece yet? Morkai

Here are a few of the others I have. The Dread, Aspiring Champion and 2 of the Heavy Weapons (VERY old school). I got some of the metal "skull" shoulder pads and took a file to the "teeth" to make them more "fang-like". "Lycanths Claw" is the working name of this Chapter/Company. Tzeentch alligned and themed based on the antithesis of the Space Wolves....the Thousand Sons.

Was just thinking a bit. My apologies for the hijack. It was not my intention to do so. I will create a thread of my own on my "Concept" Chaos Chapter when I have more to offer.

@ The Turned Blackmane, I apologize Brother for hijacking your thread. You have some good work. If you wish to discuss your concepts and ideas I would be willing. Humbly, Growler67.

Haha, thats no worries Growler, its good to see your work. Do like the claw on that dread, awesome stuff.

Gonna be speeding up the modeling and painting this week as my local store is starting a little comp under kinda tournie rules, so three paints on a model that sort of thing. Goes on for three months with painting comp at the end so will get basic colours on this week and work up from that.

Will also try a bit of green stuff to make things a bit more wolfie

Looks interesting so far.

I don't know much about the Space Wolves, so I can't help with fluff. Sounds good enough to me.

Definitely need more Wolves bitz on these guys to make them feel wolfish, as has been said. Pelts, topknots, and wolf skulls, at minimum.

Keep up the interesting work!

Here are a few pics of the whole chosen squad. Managed to find an old wolves head for the champion. The weapons will be changing on most of the marines. Was thinking of maybe using greenstuff to make fur on the clokes. What are peoples thoughts on either a trim of fur round the edges or attempting to change a cloke completely to fur? Or would it be better to use smaller scale stuff and just add little bits of fur to places?

The nest lot of pics are of one squad of marines. Some of the weapons had little fur bits on them so hopefully that will help with the look.

Got a squad of possessed but coz of the whole wulfen thing I was thinking that they should be from a different chapter (also allows me to experiment with different colours).

Also, I've not really used greenstuff properly yet so does anyone know of a good detailed way to make fur. I've searched here and found the ones linking to the gw site but for some reason i only get the home page when i click them. I do remember there being a guide for khorne marines i think it was that had fur collars but cant find it on the gw site anymore.

Different people do it different ways. What I do (when either adding it on directly or to an existing cape or cloak) is to cover the area with a thin coating of the putty (I don't like GS). Shape and cut it to size and fit that you want. I then use a sharp pointed knife and starting at the lowest portion of the area (bottom edge of cape or cloak or whatever)start making very short downward strokes. I'll "flick" my strokes in a given direction to match the "motion" of the garment (if any) and also give it a slightly irregular surface. Working left to right tthen back and forth (think weaving loom) I blend my "rows" of fur as I go up.

If I need to add more fur to an area after the initial work is done, then I wait for the putty to set before doing so. Again I'll add a small amount of putty, mold if to the area that needs it, shape it (removing any excess or adding more if needed). smooth it out and then start flicking my knife. I'll sometimes pull the knife away from the model while flicking so as to give a more natural fur like appearance rather than just scored lines. Like most aspects of modeling, it's not difficult. It just takes time and repetition to master the technique to achieve the look you want. Good Luck and keep posting pics.

awesome growler,

I will be attempting this tomorrow, i will remain calm whilst i do it, haven't got the canis helix as far as i know lol, so shouldn't throw them across the room at the first sign of failure lol.

I'll post pics at the end of the day with all the bits i get done.

How is your stuff coming along growler?

Still waiting for the putty and other things ordered from Armorcast to arrive. You may consider taking a look at my LoC and Dread. The fur was crafter differently in each. Longer strokes for the LoC and much shorter on the dread. I had to match what came with the Goblin Rider wolf head on the Dread while trying to also match the left arm from the SW Dread addition. On the LoC I was just trying to cover the flames molded in from GW while blending the Reaper Dire Wolf heads in. I still have some covering and blending to do where the heads attach on that one.

Pull the knife tip away from the model while flicking also gives the appearance of strands or clumps of strands being raised and standing out as they might in actuality or my motion or wind. Fur is hair and being such is rarely perfectly groomed, unless they are show dogs or celebrities of course :tu:

done a couple of fur bits today, will put pics up later once i'e done a couple more bits. am very pleased with the results, was a lot easier to do than i thought it would be.

how long do i need to leave the gs before painting it?

for one of the whole body clokes, would it be better to coer it bit by bit rather than cover the whole thing straight away then mould the fur?

for the first model i showed here, with the banner, i like the paint job on it as it was first one i have done, so is it easy enough to put the greenstuff on the banner and then paint that rather than have to paint the whole model again?

ok, so here are pics of the first lot of fur bits, i'm thinking that all the ones still to be painted will look ok with just the small amount of fur on them, the one with the banner i'm not sure if it would need more (this is a different banner chosen than the one talked about in the post above.

some of the pics haven't come out too well, hopefully they will show up clearer once painted.

Am wondering what to do with terminators, they are the old school chaos ones and i think they might need quite a bit of fur on them, maybe to show how old the individuals are. also, in game terms, i'm trying out mark of nurgle for them, (maybe the wolves they killed had rabies, so now they fester with disease), just wondering how i might get the look across for a chaos space wolve that follows nurgle?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/33402991@N08/3118598987/ just to show what type of terminators i am using.

My reasoning behind going for nurgle is that they all have powerfist/cainfist so slaanesh is pointless and khorne would be good but there is more chance that they would be dead by the time i get to fight back, so nurgle, making them toughness 5 seemed a good choice to take.

I'm going with Tzeentch myself. Ties in easily and well with the Thousand Sons and all.

Perhaps a furry tabbard and some of the "Wolf tail" talismans as hanging decorations. Wolfies are hard to theme in puss and pestulance. There is the GW Doom Wolf model that has part of it's skull and skeleton (ribs) exposed and it could be modified to fit the theme. Unless you wanna do heads or something I'm not sure what advise to offer. It's been a long day for me and I'm a little soft between the ears right now. I'll ponder it and get back to ya.

made a bit more progress today, though some of it turned out to be pointless lol.

built a couple of spawn, one of which i will attempt to cover in fur. Also added some fur to a few more marines and a little to the vindicator.

spent quitea bit of the day building a deamon prince from scratch but stupid thing fell apart as i attached a wing. but no matter, two lessons learnt, first one, green stuff needs a very long time to dry lol, and the second is maybe i should look at pinning :-)

two of the marines i did today, still rubbish at taking pics lol, flash is too bright, but without it the pics are too dark.

Growler, when you say wolf tail talismans, are they the bits that hang from the storm bolters of the old wolf guard terminator models? when making them would i mould the shape i wont then let it set a bit before creating the fur pattern?

Was thinking of showing that the termies are nurgle by painting some dead grass etc around their feet.

Also, got the body of an old leman russ wolf with the head cut of (used on one of the chosen) plus a few upperbody part spares, was thinking maybe making a chaos centuar and using it as a lesser deamon, or as a champion? or for just a bit of fun.

No, I think they are on the Space Wolf accessory sprue. They are wolf tails with a metal cup (paint it brass or whatever one wishes) with a ring to attach to weapons, belts and so on. Here is one on the left side of this pintle mount: SW Vehicle Weapon Again, not a great fan of Nurgle and so the decay/puss/pestulance thing just doesn't appeal to me. I suppose a Google for inspiration would offer better inspiration than I can provide in suggestion :P

I think you have the basics of fur down well enough. Time and repetition will refine your skill. It'll also develop into your own "style" the more you do it. It's actually one of the easier skills, IMHO. Keep it up and good luck "finding" the Nurgle Lycanth within to draw out. Sorry I can't be more helpful with ideas.

quick question before i continue building. i've read a little of the space wolves books and going from what i rememberin my youth, am i right in saying that ccw for wolves would be more chainswords and normal axes and not the berzerker type chain axes?

that is correct, they would not use chain axe's.

i beleive you misunderstood this

I know that if a space wolf becomes a wulfen then he is immune to chaos, but before this he can still be tempted.

its not that a wulfen is immune to chaos, its that if a space wolf would go to chaos, he would insted be taken over by the beast within him, and become a wulfen. It has nothing to do with getting him to go to chaos before he becomes a wulfen. space wolves all have a sort of, second person in them, which is like the essence of a wolf, it can give them a second wind (the ragnar books). each space wolf is constantly strugleing to control this creature, and thoes that cant, become wulfen. its strongest when their in combat, however, if they where to say "ya know what im going to join these chaos people over here" it would take control and thus the marine would insted probably rip the chaos marines inhalf. (or try.... but when has a werewolf NOT ripped something in half)

thanks war angel. I'll get all the chainswords out :-). I've got a Khârn model as well so will prob cut his axe off and put a normal axe on him, make it double headed maybe, will also prob put a beard type head on him. A lot of the marines that i am currently building and berzerkers will be walking around headless for a while till i get the right sort of head for them.

am also looking for some suitable ideas for lightning claws, was thinking of making a few thunder hammer type things, one in each hand (like the one that one of the berzerkers is holding), one of them will have a whip type thing in each hand and have a warp spider and may use bits of his weapons as lightning claws (will be count as weapons).

thanks for the explanation, will be getting the 2nd and third part of the space wolf series to read up more. maybe i should get a fabian bile type model into the army, but instead of him creating his supersoldiers, he can be giving the whole army drugs to suppress the wulfen lol
