Lightning Hawks My DIY Chapter

LTP

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. Ive been lurking around the B & C for a while now and i am amazed at some of the talented artists there are on here. Even though my painting isn't as good as some of the minis on here i thought that i would share my ideas and show you some of my minis. I recently got back into the hobby after a 2 year break (demanding job) and decided to start a space marine army.

Ok well i am crap at writing fluff but the general idea is that the chapter of the lightning hawks are loyalist and they're homeworld was overun by tyranids when most of the chapter were called out to fight a campaign. The marines returned to find there homeworld in ruins and they are now helping what is left of the poulation to fight back. The tiles on the bases are part of the building floors in the cities. I wanted to do something a bit different with them and i like the way they turned out.

With this army i also decided that i would try some GS'ing so i converted the AoBR sgt. All the Sgt's will have beret's just to make them stand out.(modelled off my own regimental beret apart from mines blue not purple lol) so forgive me if they look bad. heres the WIP shot of the First Tactical Sgt

Here are the finished shots of him. I have also been trying out NMM painting as i think it looks awesome. The gold on the shoulder trims and the belt took me ages. I spent about 2 days on him in the end.

NExt up is my first tactical marine AoBR guy. All standard marines will have silver helmets and this is the 2nd company so they have gold trims. i went for a bone bolter casing as i thought it would look smart with the shoulder pads. I also tried to do the glowing eyes technique and im pretty happy with it but let me know what you think.

Thats all for now guys im working on the first scout squad and i will be posting pictures up of my bike Sgt. He's on a quad i thought i would attempt to make one we'll see how it turns out.

C&C welcome

Not bad for a start. Good color selction.

Couple things. it is better to build up the highlights using a couple layers instead of one. It makes it look less stark.

Try using the purple with a little white added to it, then do another highlight after that with more white added it to it. Same thing for the balck. Add a little codex grey to the mix and then add more codex grey or white.

The beret is pretty good. To smooth things out, look at getting some clay shapers. They are sold at art supply stores and look like erasers from a pencil.

For you GS work, mix it up and then apply it in roughly the shape you want. Then after a couple minutes begin to work out the shape with your sculpting tool. To finish, use your shaper to smooth it out and move GS around if you need.

Always dip your tools in water to keep the GS from sticking to it.

Thanks for the tips guys. Like i said im pretty new to the whole greenstuff thing so any help is much appreciated. Ill look into getting the sandpaper and the clay tool. I see what you mean with the highlights , when i do the rest of the tac squad ill try and build it up more. I havn't varnished these models so ill see if i can do some touching up to improve them.

Couple more things.

GS is not the easist thing to sand.

If you decide that you may want to sand it, when you mix it up, use more blue than yellow, it makes the GS stuff harder/more firm. The amount of blue stuff used will dictate the hardness of the GS when it cures.

If you use a shaper, then you don't have to worry about sanding. I prefer the shaper because then you don't run the risk of accidentally sanding off/removing your GS work. It is much more user friendly.

Highlights.

When you do your first highlight, you can apply more of it and then for your second highlight, apply less of it to get the transition.

There are lots of tutorials online that will help you out.

If you live in the U.S., on the East Cost, there's a convention called Historicon, run by the Historical Miniature Gamers Society Eastern Chapter... They have a great "Painting University" thing that they run every convention, all the classes are free, all you have to do is pay the convention admission fee. One of the classes they usually run is on how to sculpt with greenstuff. It's really informative, teaches good techniques, and you're actually there with the instructor guy, so he can answer any q's for you...

Also, that Sarge's paintjob looks good. I like the beret, I think it covers the baldie Sarge's head pretty nicely. (Most of my freinds look at my bald Sarges and say "Heh, how can HE command a squad? He's a grampa!!!" Then, the very same sarge usually proceeds to kill a Warboss or a Shas'El with a lucky shot from a bolt pistol.)

lol i love it when that happens. Unfortunetely i dont live in the US im from the UK and i dont really think we have anything as good as that in my local area as far as im aware but i shall look into it.

I like modelling the berets i think it just makes the sgts stand out more.

cheers for the comments

Good stuff. I like the beret...I did one too =-D..or a couple.. =-D But..in my real world experience, berets are made of wool...sometimes..and they're not smooth..so unlike what everyone else said...you can smooth out the stuff on the shoulder, and other things, but after you finish your berets, smooth them. Then, after about a half hour, maybe get an old brush, that has semi-firm bristles, and just stroke the beret a bit. All the way around, it'll give you a nice texture that you might like.

But, your current one is kinda..chunkity looking =-D. great work huh? =-D Great work with the quartering paintjob too. You've got some nice, straight lines goin on.

Hey,

for smoothne'ss, try sculpting with a tool, and some vaseline or other petroleum jelly. Lube up your fingers and tools with it, and when you have the shape you want, smooth it down with the tool.

I have some sculpting tools that i use i dip them in water to stop the gs sticking to it but i will try vaseline as it will probably be better.

Lol chunkity is a new word to me i like it and i know what you mean. I am in the forces and everyday i see ppl wearing berets and every single one of them is shaped different (from hilarious to smart lol) so thats the kinda look im going for, i'll do the other ones different too. Cheers for the tip about the brush, will try that and see how it works out.

I will get the pics up of the bike sgt tomorrow and hopefully some wip scouts.

Just to note i didnt have all the parts that were required so i improvised.

Heres a pick of the WIP scout squad still working on their sniper rifles and need some more highlighting done on them.

These are looking really good so far.

I like the colour scheme and think the berets are a nice touch. I agree with shortsonfire79 though that while some modeling tools would be helpful you should put some texture on the berets. It would be nice if they were realistic after all, no?

These guys sound like they have an interesting story, I wouldn't mind hearing some more of it sometime..... :)

Also I just wanted to mention the shell crator under one of the quad bike's wheels, it's a really nice small touch that helps finish the piece off.

I will try and write some fluff one day lol but im pretty bad at it. give me a week and im sure ill have something lol. :D

Quick question. On the quad bike, where'd you get the base? It doesn't look like the usual bike base, you know, cut a standard 40k infantry base in half and put a Warhammer-Fantasy cavalry base between them? Did you get it elsewhere?

Also, I really like the hazard markings on the front of the Plasma gun, the bolters, and the searchlight on the back. Hazard markings are cool, you look at them and think "Warning, touching this may result in severe pain and/or dismemberment in the most holy name of the Emperor of Mankind. You have been warned."

I got the base from a company on ebay i can pm you a link if you like. they are resin bases and really nice to play with i used miliput to fill it out and it worked perfect.

Lol i agree hazard warnings are cool, however, even threatened with all those things marines will still touch them ill bet lol. just cant resist.

Hey everyone update time.

Thankyou for the comments everyone.

I have been working on my new apothecary for the last 2 days (litterally) and im very happy with how he turned out. As i dont have the time to play i thought that i would actually get my ass into gear and try and improve my painting. SO.. on this guy i have tried some blending and different shading. I also used komando khaki for the highlights rather than white as it looked top harsh. I went straight in and tried glazing but i dont think im ready for that yet lol I'm not even going to show you my attempt lol. :tu: Also the mini might look a bit grainy in the picture (high pixel cam) but in real life it actually looks alot smoother.

Well there he is. Not really sure what to paint next. Got a new chappy and libbie so might paint those or i could actually finish a squad and do some tactical guys.

let me know what you think guys.
